Gord Miller was driving me crazy with his Germany should let Latvia win by 8 to put Finland at risk stuff, but I'm sad we missed out on the possibility of back and forth goalie pulls in Germany/Latvia. Since they likely needed to win by 3, if Latvia were up 2 late they should pull their goalie. If Germany scores an empty netter then Latvia can't risk going to OT so put their goalie back in and hope when they win by 1 that Finland gets a point tomorrow to advance. But then Germany is only down by 1 and with 1 goal of breathing room they should try to go for the tie to lock a QF spot in so they pull their goalie. Then Latvia scores an empty netter to go up by 2 and we're back where we started with Latvia in a spot where they should pull their goalie again. Repeat until the game ends, or the team with the goalie pulled scores to achieve their goal.

It won't happen because fair play and all but if USA wins tomorrow against Slovakia, and Sweden beats Finland, then Canada could try to get Finland to face USA in the QF by going to OT with Germany. The issue is they couldn't just let Germany win outright because that would drop Canada to 3rd. Of course it won't happen anyway but one would assume Canada benefits if they force 1 of USA/Finland out in the QF

Lmao I was thinking about the scenarios a bit but the back and forth goalie pulling thing never crossed my mind. I don’t think anything funnier could happen in a hockey game

In the Men's Division 1A 2018 World Championship there was a game where briefly both teams had their goalie pulled. On the final day both Italy and Slovenia needed to win in regulation time to earn promotion for 2019 and it came down to a 3-3 tie with a minute left. Slovenia pulled theirs with possession in in Italy's end in the final minute. Though not confirmed by the game summary, as Italy gained control out of their own zone Italy's goalie left the net in the final ten seconds. Italy scored an empty net goal with 2 seconds left to gain promotion, winning a tie-breaker with a very pissed off Kazakh team.
