Belmont (New York):
  • Brad Cox had two runners in the opening race and finished first and second. That means he has won three of the last four races in which he has entered horses at New York. The Kentucky-based Cox is a brilliant 7-for-19 (36.8%) at this meet.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. boosted his lead in the rider's standings with two more victories.
  • In the 8th race, the $1 exacta was $196.25, noteworthy because there were only six runners. Two bombs finished 1st-2nd.
  • Manny Franco brought home a $31.20 winner in the 9th race (finale) which paid $2,157 for a $.50 trifecta, $6,560.50 for a $.50 Pick 4 and $1,436.50 for a $1 Pick 3. The top three finishers were sent off at 14-1, 13-1 and 29-1.
  • John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher combined to win races 5 and 6. The $1 exacta in the latter race paid $93.00. Anytime you can get that figure on a JV/Pletcher bet, the ticket holder should be smiling. The finish made it more exciting when as many as seven crossed the wire in a flash.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • In a field of 12, all but one was bred in Kentucky yet the Pennsylvania-bred favorite won the race. Joe Bravo rode the winner. Have whip, will travel!
Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Rider Santo Sanjur had a great day going 3-3-1 on mounts in all 8 races. He rode two wins for trainer Hugh Robertson, father to McLean Robertson who stars at Canterbury in Minnesota.
Gulfstream Park West (Florida):
  • Tyler Gaffalione ended his slump with a victory. Since winning in Oklahoma on a 1-to-9 shot, he has won just once in 17 starts and eight times in the money (1-4-3).
Remington (Oklahoma):
  • David Cabrera won four consecutive mounts, within five races.

Belmont (New York):
  • Junior Alvarado won the opener despite breaking badly yet finished in his usual style when we wins.
  • Joe Bravo won race three despite breaking badly but finished with a furious rally. Joe Bravo: Have whip, will travel!
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr., the leading rider at the meet, won race 5 and opened it up impressively in the stretch with a first-time starter named Analyze It.
  • I repeat: when Joel Rosario wins early in the card, he usually repeats and today was no different. He was a fantastic 3-2-1 in 7 starts and won two Grade III races. He could be the Jockey of the Week.
  • In race 6, Joel Rosario won with a 23-to-1 bomb for trainer Tom Albertrani who was 0-for-33 at the meet. Andina del Sur was out for the first time.
  • In race 7, Joel Rosario won with 4-to-5 chalk for trainer Chad Brown. This was the first of three consecutive Grade III $200,000 races. Off Limits, an Irish-bred, won for the 4th time in her last 5 starts. She was just 2-for-11 entering this year.
  • In race 8, Eskenformoney (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) won a Grade III $200,000 purse.
  • In race 9, Tom's Ready (Joel Rosario/Dallas Stewart) paid $18.00 to win the Grade III Bold Ruler Handicap and its $200,000 purse. Stewart is now 1-0-1 with two starters at the meet. The race finished 6-7-8-9. Junior Alvarado got nosed for second with a 22-to-1 starter.
BEL_20171028_9_2.jpg
  • In the finale, just wow! Another Laurel shipper did well in Belmont (don't forget Nik Juarez last week) and in this a $100,000 race. V.I.P Code, sent off at 71-1 finished second to a colt ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr. but paid $47 in the middle. Carlos Quinones/Phil Schoenthal -- Maryland connections -- sent a runner who is now 2-2-1 in 5 starts and was sent off as a favorite his last three races.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Today was the closing day of the meet. Ricardo Santana Jr. had three victories and won the meet's riding title with 20 wins. Michael Maker claimed the trainer's title with 13 victories.
  • In the Grade II Fayette, Calvin Borel set the clock back and won with The Player, now 4-for-10 lifetime, with perfection. Nice ride by Calvin who became a daddy for the first time earlier this month. The win paid $19.60. He rode for Buff Bradley who has helped Borel try to resurrect his career following a brief retirement. Some images are priceless.
  • DNQa4IAW4AAYztl.jpg:large

Santa Anita (California):
  • Sharp Samurai (Gary Stevens/Mark Glatt) continues his impressive streak with a win in the $200,000 Grade II Twilight Derby. The 3-year-old is now 9 6-0-0 with wins in his last four starts.
  • Trainer Mark Glatt won with his final three starters.
  • Hall-of-Fame riders Gary Stevens and Kent Desormeaux both won twice.
Melbourne's Moonee Valley course (Australia):
  • Winx did it again. 26 victories in 32 starts. 22 wins in a row. 15 Group Ones. 3 Cox Plates. She is quite the sensation.

Anyone up for another Breeders Cup handicapping challenge?
I was thinking the scoring would be.........
Number of winners correctly predicted squared......4 winners is 16 pts.
Add to that the M/L odds for winners correctly chosen. Perhaps assigning a maximum of 20-1 otherwise one wing and a prayer 70-1 shot would probably be all it took.
So a poster correctly choosing 3 winners with odds of 4-1, 7-2 and 8-5 would get 3(winners) x 3 =9 + the winners M/L odds 0f 4 + 1.6 + 3.5 = 9.1. Making their total 9 + 9.1 for a total of 18.1 points.

That seems like a reasonably fair way for both the longshot and chalk players to accumulate points but i'm wide open to a better scoring system should somebody present it.

I'll check back during the week to see if anyone is interested or presents a better scoring system.

^ All I can say is two years ago I had 7 winners (including exactas) which was more than most experts in the DRF and other publications. Last year, reality set. I was shutout. 0-for-13. IIRC, the most successful handicapper in the DRF had just four wins last year. It was that tough.

I don't think we get the volume of traffic -- especially since the migration -- to have a competition of such detail but I am game.

Belmont (New York):
  • Canceled its meet's closing day due to winds and other elements. Interesting, the carryover of some $71,000 by rule is supposed to go to Belmont's spring meet but word is that the pool may go to Friday's opener at Aqueduct.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. (rider) and Chad Brown (trainer) won the meet's titles.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • The 21-day autumn meet opened today. Keeneland shut down for the season.
  • The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $19,000 following the finale.
  • Corey Lanerie (3), Florent Geroux (2) and Ricardo Santana, Jr (2) combined to win 7 of the 11 races.
  • Trainers Steve Asmussen and Brad Cox both won twice.
  • If nothing else, family connections should be happy today. Chris Landeros rode for his father-in-law Ian Wilkes and won. Channing Hill rode for his father-in-law Wayne Catalano and also won.
  • Race 7: In a $100,000 race, the 4-to-5 favorite finished out of the money. The top four finishers went off at 5-1, 9-2, 28-1 and 74-1 which produced what seems like a lower superfecta of $2800 for $1.
  • Race 6: The #11 won. The #17 was an also eligible but entered for a main track only after the race was moved off the turf due to weather. The combo off 11-17 was next to each other in the two furthest gates since 12 through 16 were scratched.
  • Race 5: The $2 tri paid exactly $1,000.
  • Race 4: The #5 was a 6-to-1 morning line but bet heavily early and won at 7-2. A first time starter named Mojo Man went off at 56-to-1 and finished second after nearly pulling an epic upset. He paid $51.00 in the middle and $17.00 to show. The exacta was a healthy $370.20. A dream combo.
  • In that fourth race, Dale Romans won at Churchill Downs for the 701st time which tied Bill Mott who held the mark for 31 years.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Its closing day was today. Del Mar opens this week and becomes the prime track in southern Cal.
  • Evin Roman won the rider's title at the meet. Peter Miller and Richard Baltas co-shared trainer's honors.

Belmont/Aqueduct (New York):
  • NYRA received authorization for the $70,977 carryover from the canceled finale at Belmont be transferred to Aqueduct.
  • Belmont closed this past weekend. Aqueduct is dark until Friday's opener.
  • Many riders will head to California for the Breeders' Cup weekend. Javier Castellano, John Velazquez, Jose Ortiz, Irad Ortiz, Jr., Joel Rosario, Luis Saez, Manny Franco and others will be unavailable this weekend in New York. That should open the doors for some other riders perhaps Nik Juarez, Junior Alvarado, Dylan Davis and others. However, it is shocking that Tyler Gaffalione is listed for two rides Friday at Del Mar and then heads to New York for Saturday. Very peculiar.
New York reported its numbers for the Belmont fall meet and the results show an increase across the board. I don't see New York being in immediate future Breeders' Cup talk until other issues are finalized but these numbers are tremendous. And that average field size is exceptional.

2017 Belmont Park fall meet, by the numbers
* All-sources handle: $303,405,927 (3.6% increase from 2016)

* All-sources average daily handle: $8,668,741 (12.5% increase from 2016)
* Average field size: 8.17 (7.5% increase from 2016)
* Race days: 35 (the increases above despite three less racing days)
* Races: 329 (the increases above despite 25 less races)
* 2017 On-track handle: $37,259,201 (a near similar total to 2016)
* 2017 Betting interests: 2,687 (a near similar total to 2016)

Gulfstream (Florida):

  • The favorite (#1) was singled in the finale and with Tyler Gaffalione on board the result was a $.20 Pick 6 win for a happy bettor. The pick up exceeded $23,000.
  • Race 5: Following Luca Panici's win, the $2 Pick 4 paid a sizeable $34,262.60. The $2 Pick 3 was $4,036.
  • Race 4: The $2 Pick 3 was over $1,300.
  • Race 3: The winner returned $56.40. The $2 exacta paid $562.20. The $2 Pick 3 paid $2,927.60.
  • Races 3 and 4: The doubles for each returned over $600.
  • Emisael Jaramillo and Edgard Zayas are the runaway leaders at the meet to date.
  • Antonio Sano has a 3-win lead over Todd Pletcher in the trainer's standings 19-to-16. However, Pletcher is at 40% while Sano is at 16%. Carlo Vaccarezza, who doesn't get the acclaim he is due, is also at 40% at 8-for-20.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Calvin Borel was dirty. He was muddied. He had the look of an old-school jockey following this victory. He rode his backside off in the finale. The $1 ttrifecta paid $2,870.
  • Corey Lanerie had four victories.
Del Mar (California):
  • The meet opened today. The track plays host to the Breeders' Cup for the first time.
  • John Velazquez, Kent Desormeaux and Julien Leparoux finished 1-2-3 in the feature race. Riders based in the East, the West and the Central, respectively. This is going to be another fun Breeders' Cup.
Woodbine (Toronto, Canada):
  • In the fourth race, the exacta was $774.10 with a $104.00 winner. The $1 trifecta paid over $3,400. The $1 Pick 3 was more than $3.300.
  • In the fifth race, the $1 Pick 3 paid more than $3,100.
  • In the sixth race, the $1 Pick 5 paid more than $43,000.
  • In the seventh race, the $1 Pick 4 paid more than $3,300.

A Message From Eddie Olczyk To Horse Racing: Thank You

My Fellow Racing Fan,
Happy Breeders' Cup week! Before we get into picks, analysis and betting strategies, there's something I need to say:
Thank you.
Since being diagnosed with colon cancer, I've been overwhelmed by the power of your thoughts, prayers and well wishes. My family and I will be forever thankful for the kindness you've shown us.
So to everyone in racing – the fans, bettors, jockeys, owners, breeders, trainers, grooms, valets, veterinarians, media, track employees and everyone in between – thank you. Thank you so much. You mean more to me than I can ever put into words.
I also want to recognize a few people who have been there every step of the way:
  • Sam Flood, Rob Hyland & the NBC Horse Racing Team
  • Laffit Pincay III
  • John Sikura of Hill ‘n Dale Farm
  • Chris Baker of Three Chimneys Farm
  • The Baffert Family
  • Team Always Dreaming – Anthony Bonomo & Vinnie Viola
  • The Stronach Group, Xpressbet & XBTV
To you guys, your unwavering support has been both needed and greatly appreciated.

I'll admit that I'm going to miss being at the Breeders' Cup this year, especially for its first trip to Del Mar. There's just no way of replicating the energy and excitement of a big day at the races. But even though I won't be at the track, you'd better believe I'll be watching every minute and playing every race. In my eyes, these are the best two days of the year to “let it ride” and shoot for the fences. Somebody is going to hit big – why shouldn't it be us?
I'm especially looking forward to getting another crack at the Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge. I played last year at Santa Anita and finished in the Top 40 – not bad for a tournament that had 397 entries – but I still think about things I could've done differently. A couple tweaks to my approach and maybe I win the whole thing. Wish me luck this year unless, of course, you're playing too. In that case, good luck to you. Hopefully we're both there at the finish line.
So let's pick some winners, hit big and enjoy a phenomenal weekend of racing!
I'll see you at the track soon.

Your Friend,
Eddie Olczyk

Churchill (Kentucky):
  • Race 8: One of the oddest finishes to a race in recent memory. The #8, which was 8-to-1, was on the lead in the stretch and mere steps from an obvious win, but then the unthinkable occurred and rider Jesus Castenon was tossed. Then that led to bewildering payouts. The final odds for the top four were 33-to-1, 20-1, 7-1 and 34-1. The winner paid $69. The exacta was a stunning $1.327.40. The trifecta was a mesmerizing $20,471.80. The $1 super returned $59,927.30. The $2 Pick 3 was over $2,300.
  • Race 10 had a triple inquiry but the order of finish stood. The $.50 Pick 4 returned $4,300 or $17k for $2. The $.50 Pick 5 paid $22,000+ or more than $88,000 for $2. The $2 Pick 3 was more than $3,000.
Del Mar (California):
  • Is all dressed up and ready to go....just hours away! Breeders' Cup Day 1.
  • The finale had a $75.40 winner. The $.50 Pick 4 paid more than $3,700. They also have a $2 Exact 5 (top 5) which paid more than $103,000.

That's a really good way to make money. :thumbu:

Doesn't look promising, oh well good luck to everyone on the best weekend of the horse racing year

Edit: Oops, messed that reply up.

^ I sense that is what you intended.

Here are my key horses so far for Friday with other options on the table:

Race 6: #2 Happily (who may be my hot pick of the day)
Race 7: #3 Sharp Azteca
Race 8: #1 Mendelssohn
Race 9: #6 Forever Unbridled. Of course, I am going to pick her. She is my sentimental pick.

This is one tough race. And then curious minds inquired and received a response.

Fipke will have to pay double jock's fee for Forever Unbridled in Distaff

The California stewards informed Charles Fipke, owner of Breeders' Cup Distaff contender Forever Unbridled, that he will have to pay the jockeys John Velazquez and Joel Rosario the same fee based on how much money the mare earns in Friday's $2 million race.

On Monday, at entry time but before post positions were drawn later that afternoon, Fipke replaced Rosario with Velazquez. Rosario had ridden Forever Unbridled in her last six starts, including victories this year in the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis at Churchill Downs and the Grade 1 Personal Ensign at Saratoga.

Ron Anderson, the agent for Rosario, told the stewards he had a call with Dallas Stewart, the trainer of Forever Unbridled, for the Distaff. The stewards spoke to Stewart, who confirmed that was the case. Velazquez, until Monday, did not have a mount in the race.

In instructing Fipke to pay a double jocks fee, the stewards -- Grant Baker, Scott Chaney and Kim Sawyer _ cited California Horse Racing Rule 1791, which states "conflict claims for the service of a jockey shall be decided by the stewards."

Jockeys make 10-percent of purse money earned for finishing first, second or third. Beyond that, a jockey receives a $150 losing mount fee, according to the stewards.

Forever Unbridled, off the late jockey switch, gets the job done. Clearly the best horse on the track.

Del Mar (California):
  • DISTAFF (race 9): Forever Unbridled (John Velazquez/Dallas Stewart) is just a wonderful specimen who seemingly is getting better. She is a combination of finesse, power and beauty. The pedigree speaks for itself. The switch to Johnny Velazquez from Joel Rosario was perhaps controversial but both riders are skilled yet contain the experience and acumen to know they are on board a special talent. The owner seemed very nervous in responding to the question. A simple "Joel is a great rider but John Velazquez is someone whom we consider the best" would have sufficed. I wonder if there is another issue or perhaps it was a devised so that other parties could not use Johnny V. here or a potential run in the Derby should he decide that. Forever Unbridled is now 17 8-3-4 -- 15 times in the money in 17 starts and 4-0-1 in her last 5 starts covering 13 months. Those numbers are even more jarring when you consider the lengthy resume of stakes races. She has earned well north of $2,000,000. The Hall of Fame awaits. She was my sentimental pick as listed above but it is more than that, she is running on all cylinders.. Abel Tasman is now 6-4-0 in 11 starts after a second place finish. The Pegasus? If she wins and her granddaddy is still not in the Hall of Fame, then shame on those responsible. Pedigree means something. Enough said.

  • JUVENILE TURF (race 8): Mendelssohn intrigued me at 8-1 morning line enough to single him. He was bet down to 5-to-2. He won.
  • DIRT MILE (race 7): Battle of Midway and Sharp Azteca excited the masses with a nice stretch battle. Paco Lopez got all he could out of the runner up and even sneaked a head in front at one point after dipping back to second. Flavien Prat had his third winner of the day and at 15-to-1.
  • JUVENILE FILLIES TURF (race 6): Rushing Fall (Javier Castellano/Chad Brown) looked good. She is now 3-for-3 lifetime. Happily, my pick who came from Europe, was seemingly pulled during the race and finished last from the initial viewing.
  • Flavien Prat rode in 7 of the 10 races and finished in the money five times with four victories. He was a star today.
  • Summary of picks for the four Breeders' Cup races: 2 wins, 1 second and an unplaced perhaps due to circumstances.
  • Summary of the rider and trainer standings through four races: Javier Castellano, Ryan Moore, John Velazquez and Flavien Prat with one win each. Chad Brown, Jerry Hollendorfer, Aidan O'Brien and Dallas Stewart with one win each.
  • The first day of Del Mar's host for the Breeders' Cup showed an increase in handle over 2016 when Santa Anita hosted. Over $52,200,000 was wagered which is a high since 2013.
  • Friday's on-track handle was $9,280,504, a 29% increase over 2016 (Santa Anita). The crowd was listed at 32,278.
  • Jose Ortiz is 0-for-7 at the meet and has dropped 15 straight races. He is 0-7-2 in that time. He is generally not accustomed to such skids.
  • The $2 Pick 6 paid over $146,000.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Junior Alvarado, Nik Juarez and Rajiv Maragh each won twice during the 10-race card. Junior should have brought home the late double with a third win but went too far wide approaching the stretch. He did win the 9th race with an exasperating photo finish.
    AQU_20171103_9_1.jpg

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Chalk up four more wins for Corey Lanerie. He now has 12 wins this meet which is nine more than his closest challenger.
