Because it is never too early to talk about Saratoga...

The 2017 meet at historic Saratoga Race Course will again be highlighted by the Grade 1, $1.2 million Whitney and the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers, the centerpieces of two of the biggest days in North American racing.

The 40-day meet, which includes 69 stakes worth $18.775 million in purses, will run from Friday, July 21, through Labor Day, Monday, September 4. After opening weekend, racing will be conducted six days a week, Wednesdays through Mondays.

Note that the Grade I King's Bishop has been renamed the H. Allen Jerkens who passed away in 2015.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Luca Panici had three rides today two of which a postage stamp couldn't separate first and second. He won both including a dead heat with Edgard Zayas who won three races.. Luca, my boy! Watch these:

    Race 8:

    Race 4:

Belmont (New York):
  • The Ortiz Brothers won five of the nine races. Jose won three and Irad won twice.
  • Javier Castellano had what appeared to be the favorite in race 5 but the horse bolted once entering the track. He took off in the opposite direction. the oddity happens occasionally but it affected the odds of the other runners.

Indiana Downs (Indiana):
  • Hockey and horse racing have a lengthy relationship. Today, a horse named Gostisbehere by the owner Stephen Wigmore who is a Flyers' fan, ran and finished second. The horse has been in the money in three of four races.

FRIDAY: This is a very good card deserving of some praise. Don't overlook Race 7, the Pimlico Special is a solid field. Edit: The DRF has since agreed with the deepness of the field and has an article: http://www.drf.com/news/shaman-ghost-tops-strong-field-pimlico-special

In the feature, Lights of Medina with an 8-to-1 morning line surprises me. That could be a play. This race is a major step up in class for her but Pletcher should have her rolling.

In the Preakness, bombs are generally less of an issue than in the Derby. Always Dreaming will be my pick to win. Classic Empire needs to shine in what could be the most important race of his life. Conquest Mo Money could be the longshot play.

  • Post time for Friday is 11:30 a.m. ET.
  • Seven stakes races within the 14-race card Friday including three Grade 3 races and one Grade 2 race.
  • Keep an eye on some of the local riders this card especially Trevor McCarty, Feargal Lynch and Horatio Karamanos.
  • NBCSN is expected to join the card for race 8 through race 11.
  • Ben's Cat, who is now 11-years-old, will be running in Race 10. He is 61 32-9-7 lifetime but out of the money his last three races and on a career-worst 6-race losing skid. His last victory came in this race in 2016, his most recent run at Pimlico, a track in which he has had much success. Ben's Cat is 14 10-1-0 at the track (10 out of 14 wins). He has earned over $2.5 million.
  • Among the Friday highlights
    • Race 5: $150,000 Allaire DuPont Distaff Stakes (G3)
    • Race 7: $300,000 Pimlico Special (G3)
    • Race 8: $100,000 Hilltop Stakes
    • Race 9: $150,000 Adena Springs' Miss Preakness Stakes (G3)
    • Race 10: $100,000 Jim McKay Sprint
    • Race 11: $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan (G2)
    • Race 13: $100,00 Skipat Stakes

Tepin in foal with a Curlin baby.
Two-time champion turf mare Tepin has been confirmed in foal to two-time Horse of the Year Curlin on an April 30 cover.

Tepin, owned by Robert Masterson, is being boarded at Hill 'n' Dale Farm near Lexington, Ky., where Curlin stands.

Tepin was retired last month with a career record of 23-13-5-1, including nine Grade 1/Group 1 wins
or placings in three countries, earnings of $4,437,918, and Eclipse Awards as outstanding turf female for both 2015 and 2016. Her career was highlighted by a victory in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, making her the only American-based runner to win the prestigious event, and a score in the 2015 Breeders' Cup Mile, a race she was second in the following season.

Curlin, whose stud fee rose to $150,000 this season, is the sire of Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice, Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator, and champion Stellar Wind, among several other Grade 1 winners. Tepin adds luster to what was already an outstanding book for the rising star, who also has been bred to Grade 1 winners Cavorting, Marketing Mix, Rachel’s Valentina, and Taris in 2017.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Luca Panici, Tyler Gaffalione and Edgard Zayas, all among the winningest riders at the meet, each won twice.
  • Ralph Ziadie, who has been training since the early 1980s, is 11-for-23 at the meet and second to Todd Pletcher in victories.

Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Edgar Prado won twice. I am not sure the last time he won twice on a card. One of his victories was by 21 3/4 lengths....and it seemed the margin was larger.
  • Steve Hamilton won consecutive races (two wins total) including on a 27-to-1 as a replacement rider.
  • Lane Luzzi, who had the small total of five wins in 2017, was the victorious jockey in the finale. He seems to be an afterthought with mounts, isn't scheduled to ride again until May 25. His reaction to today's win was priceless, however. Mimicked his dad's celebration and then kissed the horse.

Belmont (New York):
  • Trainer Jason Servis continues a bit of a roll with a win today. He is 12 5-1-3, 42% wins, 75% in the money, at the meet. He obviously don't have the allotment of horses as Todd Pletcher, Chad Brown and others but those are highly complimentary figures.

Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Actress (Nik Juarez/Jason Servis), a maiden with just two prior starts, won the Black-Eyed Susan. As stated above, I thought Todd Pletcher had a live horse with the 8-1, higher price of his pair, and that seemed in evidence. Great finish. I really thought the #5 would win, prior to the start and into the stretch. It reminded me, slightly, of the 1997 Kentucky Derby.

  • There was the remarkable total of 46 jockeys and 86 trainers listed on today's 14-race card. Eleven different jockeys won and Javier Castellano had the natural hat trick with three straight wins starting in race 6. Twelve different trainers won.
  • Race 2, there were only seven horses entered but they were bred in five states and two nations.
  • Kudos to track analyst Gabby Gaudet for spotting something in her handicapping of race 6. Though her pick didn't win, she did tout the #2 (15-to-1 ML, sent off at 17-to-1) as a best bet of the day. The horse only lost at the wire and through a frenetic finish. The Javier Castellano/Luis Saez exacta returned $301.
  • In the Pimlico Special, race 7, Shaman Ghost won as expected but fought tooth-and-nail with the runner up. Good race, as advertised. The winner has earned over $3.5 million. Noble Bird, one runner who was considered by many, was a pre-card scratch.
  • In race 9, the #12, the pick of many, was scratched at the gate which sent the bettors into a late frenzy.
  • The rains came just at the start of race 10.
  • Richard's Boy was the pick but any race with Ben's Cat, now 11-years-old, should mention appreciation. Though he finished out of the money again, he is now 62 32-9-7 lifetime with $2.6 million earned.
  • In race 12, the unlikely 1-2 punch of Travis Wales and Taylor Hole returned the exorbitant sum of $1,436.20 for a $2 exacta. The $2.00 trifecta paid $5,604.60. The $1.00 superfecta paid $28,441.90
  • In the 14th and final race, the $1 superfecta paid a staggering $173,393.10. The race day concluded with a $.50 Pick 4 returning $7,974.95.

Friday was an absolutely successful day with a record attendance of 50,339. A record handle of $19.89 million was also set and with the daily double continued in Saturday then more than $20 million was wagered. This can only help Laurel get the Breeders' Cup.

Back to that double when coupled with Actress:

1. MULTIPLIER, $539.20
2. CLOUD COMPUTING, $368.80
3. HENCE, $576.40
4. ALWAYS DREAMING, $68.80
5. CLASSIC EMPIRE, $85.20
6. GUNNEVERA, $300.40
7. TERM OF ART, $2,600.20
8. SENIOR INVESTMENT, $1,573.80
9. LOOKIN AT LEE, $406.20
10. CONQUEST MO MONEY, $309.00

Belmont (New York):
  • Manny Franco won four times and for four different trainers. He had the chance with many of the top riders at Pimlico. There were only 15 jockeys in New York today.
  • Chris DeCarlo: one ride, one win. I have no problem playing the vets, Luzzi, DeCarlo, etc. and while they don't win often can offer good value in exotics. DeCarlo entered 0-for-18 at the meet. His winning mare was off since September.
  • The winner in race 3, ridden by bug Hector Diaz, Jr., paid $69. The $33-to-1 winner was more than 3 times higher than every other runner on the board. That is a longshot! He won gate-to-wire.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Tyler Gaffalione won three more times.
  • In race 7, the winner paid $86.20, the exacta returned $652.60, the $1 trifecta more than $3,000 and the $.10 superfecta more than $2,300+.
  • Each of the 10 races had a different winning trainer.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Secret Trick, the winner in the opener, is now 4-for-17 lifetime but under current trainer Michael Lauer, the record is a noteworthy 3-for-5.

You can tell much more the Preakness matters to NBC than the conference finals now that they've given Eddie Olczyk his own makeshift studio. He could easily be doing what he's doing and be off-site.

Love it, specifically Kenny Rice, when he does an interview and the connections no-sells his narrative.

"Is this redemption for the Derby?"

"WTF are you talking about?"

I think classic empire was fighting with Always Dreaming they forgot about the rest of the field. What a run on the home stretch from Cloud Computing.

Usually in the Preakness you can get away with starting way in front and holding on. I'm surprised both of them fell off. I figured one would and the other would hold on and win

Pimlico (Maryland):
  • The total handle for the entire card was a record $97,168,658 with another all-time mark for attendance set at 140,327. The Preakness race pool read more than $60,000,000. Maryland racing had a fantastic weekend. Both the Kentucky Derby card, which exceeded $200,000,000, and Preakness card have obliterated previous handle records.
  • I'm glad to have avoided the Preakness. Todd Pletcher is meticulous and doesn't do his best work on short notice; however, I still would have used his Derby winner on top the ticket. But that is now an afterthought. Classic Empire ran a good race. Cloud Computing benefitted from the early battle. It was a weak crop of three-year-olds especially comparatively speaking to recent years. The reason New York has such a massive and improved card on Belmont Stakes day is to protect itself in case a potential Triple Crown winner was lacking. That will happen this year but that card is expected to be tremendous. Preakness payouts included: $1 Super Hi Five for $283,000+. The $1 superfecta paid in excess of $8,000. The $.20 Pick 6 paid over $7,000. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $6,000. The 2-5-8 trifecta returned more than $2,100 for a $1 wager. Todd Pletcher and Chad Brown have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown, arguably the two most successful trainers on the East coast.

  • Race 12: A Grade II. World Approval exceeded the $1,000,000 earned mark with the win.
  • Race 11: Jose Ortiz won on No Mo Dough, now 3-for-4 lifetime, 12-1 morning line sent off at 9-to-1.
  • Race 10: Cambodia, with Florent Geroux in the reins, is now 4-0-3 in the last seven races.
  • Race 9: Grade III. No such things as guarantees but the 4-5 exacta in either order seemed likely. The #5 Whitmore won for the fifth straight time. The #4 A.P. Indian is now 9 6-2-1 since the start of 2016. The exacta was under $10 but bigger bank rolls could have profited judiciously when using a 5/4/all trifecta since Javier Castellano came in third at 30-to-1.
  • Race 8: A great deal of money on Mo Maverick in the inside slot with a M/L of 10-1 bet down to 3-1. The horse was gunned out of the gate by Luis Saez but couldn't hold the lead and fell to third. Joel Rosario/Bill Mott won with a Japanese-bred.
  • Race 5: In Javier Castellano's other win, he went gate-to-wire.
  • Local rider Horatio Karamanos won three times.

Woodbine (Toronto):
  • Absolutely astronomical figures today.
    • Five of the ten races had $25+ winners.
    • Race 6: a $36 place payout and a $1 Pick 5 returned $138,903.55.
    • Race 7: $1 Pick 4 paid $3,200.60.
    • Race 8: $50.30 winner, a $1 Pick 3 paid $1,969.05, a $2 double $1,599.60.
    • Race 9: $1 Pick 3 paid $19,467.25.
      [*]
      Race 10: $1 Pick 4 paid $163,431.80 and a $1 Pick 3 paid $15,686.55.

Belmont (New York):
  • Race 1: Chris DeCarlo won the opener at 16-to-1. His only ride of the day. He has won his last two races after beginning the meet 0-for-20. As mentioned yesterday, vets like Luzzi and DeCarlo when used properly can return nice values.
  • Race 2: And then...Mike Luzzi won the next race at 3-to-1. The DeCarlo-Luzzi double....ahem... paid $152.
  • Race 3: Trainer Leo O'Brien, father-in-law to John Velazquez, finally won in 2017 after beginning the year 0-for-38. The $2 Pick 3 paid $2,544.
  • Race 4: The third place finisher was on just three days rest. I do not recall the last time I have seen that. She was a 9-to-5 M/L.
  • Race 5: $.50 Pick 4 paid $3,438.75 or over $13,000 for $2. $1 Pick 3 $2,342.50.
  • Race 7 was a thriller. Jose Lezcano nosed Kendrick Carmouche Both riders won twice, as dad Manny Franco, and the six wins represented the last six races on the card.
  • Race 9: Todd Pletcher had an 8-to-1 morning line -- that doesn't happen often in New York -- sent off at 7-to-1 and won. The latter does happen often.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Antonio Gallardo was 3-4-0 in 9 starts.

Arlington (Illinois):
  • $1 superfecta paid $48,056.80.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • In the Grade III $100,000 Matron, the $1 superfecta returned over $15,000. Brian Hernandez, Jr./Ian Wilkes was the winning combo.
  • In the Grade III $100,000 Louisville, the $1 superfecta paid $40,766.90. Winning rider was Manoel Cruz who was victorious for just the 4th time in 2017 and is just shy of 16,000 career starts..

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Luca! 20-1 winner. Luca Panici! The legend grows.
  • Tyler Gaffalione won the $100,000 feature race. He had two wins again.

Santa Anita (California):
  • The $200,000 feature race returned $80 for the exacta. Flavien Prat was the winning rider.
  • Race 6: A 53-to-1 shot paid $108.80. A $1 trifecta win paid more than $1,700.

I think classic empire was fighting with Always Dreaming they forgot about the rest of the field. What a run on the home stretch from Cloud Computing.

Fractions were pretty modest, they weren't speedballing on the front end. Always Dreaming clearly wasn't as his best, and a 2 week turnaround is really tough. They were simply beat by a horse who was way fresher and was pointed to this race.

If anyone is playing today, there is a Pick 5 carryover at Belmont. It will start at a quarter of a million dollars. No one hit it yesterday. The last time there was a Pick 5 carryover at Belmont came in 2013. Since then, it has happened only once at any of the NYRA tracks and that was Aqueduct in 2015. This will be a rare opportunity to pounce on a popular wager at a high price.

The Rainbow Six at Gulfstream had no unique winner yesterday with the 7 horse the only singled pick in the finale. Without a sole winner yesterday, the carryover will start at $303,000+.

One leftover: The crowd for the Preakness and Breeders' Cup are fundamentally and characteristically different but if the B.C. officials are seeking an alternative to the comfort zone of Santa Anita or the traditions of Kentucky, then perhaps Laurel will get a shot. The record numbers today bode well for Maryland and of course Frank Stronach and his gang are collectively influential. Weather, of course, could be a detriment as witnessed in both New York and New Jersey in past Octobers during Breeders' Cup weekends. Maryland racing is on the rebound and could get a large boost with Laurel as host. A gamble but perhaps one worth investigating.

Belmont (New York):
  • There was an opportunity to cash on some potential windfall emphasized by a Pick 5 pool that exceeded $2,000,000 with $1,791,131 of fresh money. The winners cashed in with $3,363 apiece for a $2 wager.
  • The last race ended with payouts of $782 for the double, $42,387 for the Pick 6 and $9,427 for the Pick 4.
[*]Irad Ortiz, Jr. (3), Jose Ortiz (2) and Manny Franco (2) combined to win seven of the nine races. Franco won the opener with the second highest price on the board. The winning horse came out of a race in Philly in which he was walked off. Franco then won the finale on a 15-to-1 shot.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Trevor McCarthy and Antonio Gallardo were involved in a spill in which the former suffered a dislocated shoulder and will be sidelined multiple weeks. Tough break for the good young rider who recently won for the 1,000th time. Gallardo was also hospitalized with bruises around the neck but nothing apparently more substantial. With the fallen riders on the track as the horses rounded the turn, outriders stopped the race which was eventually declared a no-contest.
  • Antonio Gallardo was a perfect 2-for-2 today prior to the spill. He finished the weekend 11 5-4-0. He will have a strong meet if healthy. He didn't get the mounts in New York but this level is one in which he will have better success.
  • Race 7: A New Jersey-bred won in open company in a race filled with Kentucky and Florida breds. Judy's Chance is now 10 5-2-1 lifetime and won in fine form, a descendant of Unbridled.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Trainer Brendan Walsh, who has just 130 lifetime wins in 840 starts, was a perfect 3-for-3 today.
  • In the penultimate race, Calvin Borel appeared to go gate-to-wire except for a slight relapse in the stretch but fought hard for just his 8th win of 2017. He had seven rides today. This was his best in a while.
  • Corey Lanerie, who was out of the money in all six rides Saturday in Maryland, returned home and was 9 3-2-1 (3 wins and in the money 6 times in 9 rides).
  • J.R. Caldwell is having a fantastic meet which has been catching the attention of many. He is 15 10-1-1 through Sunday. Having 10 wins in 15 starts is a dream for most trainers. One story is here: http://americanracehorse.com/native-texan-j-r-caldwell-firing-on-all-cylinders-at-churchill-downs/

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Nine jockeys and nine trainers won on the 10-race card. The best race finished three across-the-wire in which Luca Panici succeeded with the favorite.

Santa Anita (California):
  • The $2 pick 6 paid over $90,000.
  • In the race 9 feature race, the $125,000 Fran's Valentine, the appropriately named Roo's Valentine, a 4-year-old filly to dam Black Valentine, seemingly should have won but finished second to Kent Desormeaux and Moonless Sky who paid $15.60. The winner is a perfect 3-for-3 under current trainer Eddie Truman. The horse was sent west after four winless races in Florida. Career mark is now 7 3-2-2.
  • Kent Desormeaux won three times including the final two races. The winner in race 8 was out for the 51st time.

It will probably depend on who comes back from the Preakness, namely Classic Empire. He'll probably go because Mark Casse doesn't have triple crown horses every year. Some of these other trainers will decide that sending their Grade A horses is a dumb idea given the distance.

Random notes:

  • McCracken, a popular colt in the Kentucky Derby prep races, could run in the June 17 Grade III Matt Winn at Churchill Downs. Trained by Ian Wilkes, McCracken finished eighth in the Derby.
  • Leslie's Lady, who is the 21-year-old dam to Grade I winners Beholder and Into Mischief, is in foal to American Pharoah.
  • The Midlantaic horse sale finished today and more than $25,000,000 was spent on 330 horses. The big news was a record $1,500,000 spent on one horse, the largest ever in Midlantic's history. The purchased 2-year-old colt is by Curlin.
  • Interesting in that Frank Stronach is sending Tim Ritvo, one of his top guns, to Santa Anita for an indefinite amount of time. Something similar was done at the Maryland tracks which has seen a resurgence. Santa Anita has been bland the last couple or so seasons with the headliners being an exception. A black eye was when one card was scratched due to lack of horses. That shouldn't be happening at a superior venue such as Santa Anita. Field sizes are too important to the sport. Hopefully the issues can be resolved.
  • Laurel Park (Maryland) will offer 21 stakes worth $1.6 million in purses during its summer meet which opens Friday, June 9.
  • NBC Sports will broadcast the Pegasus Stakes. The world's richest horse race has a purse of $16,000,000 and will be run at Gulfstream Park January 27, 2018.

May 23, 2017

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • A typically quiet Tuesday with most of the major tracks dark. However, Philly had a 67-to-1 finish second in race 2. That was nothing compared to what happened in race 9, the finale. An 87-to-1 won the race and paid $177.40. The tri was $2,300 for $.50 with a 40-to-1 in third place. The superfecta returned more than $2,100 for $.10.

Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Erik Barbaran and Jay Bernardini, who teamed for three wins Monday, had a $16.00 winner in the finale tonight.

This is a mild surprise. Songbird is heading east. Go get 'em!

There won't be a possible Triple Crown winner but that day in New York should be loaded with talent and deep fields.

California-based two-time champion Songbird will make her 2017 debut at Belmont Park on June 10, Belmont Stakes day,*trainer Jerry Hollendorfer confirmed early Thursday morning.

Songbird, who is scheduled to work Thursday at Santa Anita, is nominated to the Grade 1, $400,000 Beholder Mile on June 3 at Santa Anita, but Hollendorfer and Songbird’s owner Rick Porter have opted for the $750,000 Phipps one week later.

“The degree of difficulty between the two races is probably about the same,” Hollendorfer said. “But one purse is 750, and the other purse is 400.* That was a big factor. Plus, it would give me another week to work with her and get her ready before Belmont day.”

Songbird has not started since finishing second by a nose in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 4. That was her first loss from 12 starts. Songbird has earned $3,712,000.

Pimlico (Maryland);
  • Fantastic payouts much of the day with four of the nine races returning exactas of $100+ But more evident was the payouts upon the card's conclusion. A $.20 Pick 6 which paid $185,000k+ and a $.50 Pick 4 which returned $15,000+. And since no one hit the Pick 5, a $2 bet for 4 out of 5 yielded more than $9,700. Not bad for a ticket with a loser.
  • My fave bug rider Ashley Castrenze, with her second ride of the day, was determined in winning a photo in the finale at 13-to-1. Another rider, Carlos Delgado who is a 7-pound bug, finished second, was perhaps even more determined in that he split two horses and nearly achieved the win, a very gutsy ride. Watch the finish but especially the runner up who rode an Alberta-bred to a brief lead before succumbing to the eventual winner. That is how you endear yourself to handicappers. And nice job Ashley!
  • Trainers Larry Jones and Linda Rice were in the same race. and this time Jones prevailed. While Rice was the overwhelming favorite, Jones's 3-year-old colt was sent off at 5-to-2 and won comfortably and in style. He had Mitchell Murrill riding, a youngster who got into horse racing later in life but he subbed for the injured Trevor McCarthy who is a top rider in the circuit.
  • In the third race, Wesley Ho and Sharon Banford teamed for a win on a 10-to-1 named Dirty Laundry leading the track announcer to break into the lyrics of Don Henley's song as the winner crossed the finish line. Amusing stuff. The trainer won for the first time this year, she is a Parx/Penn regular from the recent past but was 0-for-3 with the runner at Charles Town in WV and her sole runner in 2017.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Tyler Gaffalione won the opening and closing races today but in between Miguel Vasquez won three consecutive rides (races 3, 4 and 6) in seven total mounts. Gaffalione was 5 2-1-1 today.

Belmont (New York):
  • Luis Saez, Angel Arroyo, Jose Ortiz and Joel Rosario each won twice in the 9-race card. Belmont was dark yesterday and ran on a sloppy track today.

Churchilll Downs (Kentucky):
  • Corey Lanerie earned a natural hat trick by winning his first three rides in races 2, 3 and 4. He finished the card 6 3-1-1 and rode for six different trainers. Lanerie is running away with the leading rider at the meet (25% winning and 65% in the money to date), at last check he is leading in victories 26-to-15 over second place Brian Hernandez, Jr.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Bombs away in the finale with a 25-to-1 topping the ticket. The $2 exacta returned over $860. The $1 trifecta paid over $6,000.
  • Winners in the Pick 6 picked up more than $16,000 each. However, without a unique ticket holder, the Pick 6 will grow to in excess of $271,000 for Friday.

Pimlico (Maryland):
  • I mentioned the 7-pound bug, in yesterday's recap, who had a gutsy ride. Today, he won on a 14-to-1 shot. Carlos Delgado, perhaps, is a name to remember. Meanwhile, in the same race. the combo of Ashley Castrenze-Larry Jones was sent off the favorite and finished third. The only Lacey Gaudet (trainer) entry finished second. The trifecta returned $567 for a deuce. The double paid $475.
  • The payouts continue to be decent. Seven of the nine winners paid more than $10. Three exactas in nine races paid more than $100. The $.50 Pick 5 after the concluding race paid almost $10,000. The $.50 Pick 5 following the fifth race paid in excess of $8,700.

Belmont (New York):
  • With inclement weather in the area, there were plenty of scratches. The opening $2 double paid a whopping sum of $4.50.
  • The $2 Pick 3 after the third race, won by Chris DeCarlo, paid $7.70. It was that kind of day in New York.
  • The $2 Pick 6 paid over $15,000 following the last race.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Now these are payouts. The $,20 Pick 6 paid $60,000+. The $.50 Pick 5 paid $44,000+. The $1 Pick 4 paid over $8,700. That is partly due to the second highest price on the board in a 10-horse field winning the finale at 35-to-1.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • The carryover for the Rainbow Six will be close to $400,000 to begin Saturday.
  • Bug rider Franklin Ceballos won for the first time in his fourth career start. He rode the second shortest price on the board for Wesley Ward.

Belmont (New York):
  • Johnny Velazquez won his first three rides among his six starters. The last three days, he totaled 10 4-1-3.
  • Johnny Velazquez (3), Jose Ortiz (3) and Javier Castellano (2) won 8 of the 10 races. Meanwhile, 10 different trainers won the 10 races.
  • In race 7, the shortest (3-to-2) and longest (32-to-1) shots on the board topped the ticket.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Veteran jockey Eddie Castro began the day with wins in the first three races. I do not recall the last rider to start any track 4-for-4 through four races; however, Castro's attempt with a 3-to-5 shot weakened and finished fourth. A natural hat trick to start the day is always something special.
  • This isn't the New Jersey-bred Irish horse she preferred to win but owner Isabelle de Tomaso, whose better known horse is Irish War Cry, won the Grade III feature with Irish Strait, a $21.40 winner.
  • In race 5, the tri was more than $2,500 and the $1 super paid a handsome $11,000+.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • The opener was won by a 10-pound bug who won for the first time lifetime. He is now 1-for-44 at the meet and 1-for-72 lifetime in North America.

Penn National (Pennsylvania):
  • Race 3: A 10-year-old mare who was sent out at 60-to-1 finished second. It was her 101st lifetime race. Yup, 101 lifetime races.

Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Lane Luzzi started the day with a bang when he delivered with a 6-to-1 shot in the opener.
  • Charlie DeMario, trainer, who was 33 0-0-6 this year (no wins or second places) finally got a winner in 2017. The 11-to-1 horse was 0-for-13 lifetime and in sixth place at the 3/4 pole before winning by almost four lengths.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Tyler Gaffalione won four times, twice for Todd Pletcher. I expect we will be seeing that duo win together often the next few weeks. One of the wins was sent off as a prohibitive favorite, 1-to-9 on the board at one time.
  • Ramsey Zimmerman, who has had a few documented off-the-track issues, won twice today and is now 4-for-43 in 2017 after his latest comeback. Zimmerman won the feature today on board a 35-to-1 bomb.
  • Miguel Vasquez won the opener and closer, the first race on a 21-to-1 shot. He is having a noticeably good meet.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Jon Court won twice today in four rides and is now 2-for-32 at the meet. That is someone who needed a win.
  • In race 6, the Pick 5 paid $16,000+ for $.50 or for $2 returned $65,430. The exacta was more than $600. The $ tri paid more than $2,700. The $1 super paid $10,680.10.
  • In race 7, the double returned over $600.

Arlington (Illinois):
  • Cowboy Culture won the feature race, the Arlington Classic, and paid $7.00. Shaun Bridgmohan was the winning rider. Hopefully, Illinois can straighten out its issues with the sport. Arlington looks to be a fun destination, certainly historic, but it seems to be in need of a booster shot.

Woodbine (Toronto):
  • In the Grade II, $177,000, feature race, a 10-to-1 and 37-to-1 topped the ticket. The $2 exacta paid more than $370. Eurico da Silva, the leading rider at the meet with 32 wins was the winning rider. Superstar Catch a Glimpse, who has earned almost $2,000,000, bled during the race and she was pulled by top notch rider Florent Geroux for precautionary reasons. Apparently, the injury could have been more severe and even heat stroke was mentioned. She has now failed to win her last six races after winning eight in a row and beginning her career an amazing 9 8-0-0. Mark Casse and his people have a major decision to make.

Santa Anita (California):
  • The race of the day may have been the finale. A 102-to-1 shot led most of the race and appeared headed home before tiring to Mike Smith on a 10-to-1 shot who nipped the runner up at the wire. The race was so close that a reverse angle was shown and still too close to call. The exacta was over $1,200 for $2. The trifecta paid almost $10,000 for $2. The $.10 superfecta paid more than $5,300 or in excess of $53,000 for a winning $1 wager. The runner up, who paid an incredible $72.40 in the middle and was out for the 4th time, is named Malibu Music and an Unbridled's Song descendant.
  • Mike Smith and east coast rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. each won twice. Ortiz Jr. was sent off at 25-to-1, second highest price on the board, and finished second to Flavien Prat and Illuminant in the Grade II Monrovia.
  • Cupid (Rafael Bejarano/Bob Baffert) won the Gold Cup Grade I feature race and paid a sizeable $16 for the victory. The 4-year-old colt entered off an 8-month layoff and is 10 5-1-0 lifetime. He has raced in six states in his last six races.
  • Lady Eli is back. She is good. Article: http://www.latimes.com/sports/more/la-sp-santa-anita-gold-cup-20170527-story.html

Santa Anita (California):
  • The Pick Six carryover for Monday will be more than $355,000.
  • Ashleyluvssugar was determined in his Grade II victory in which he benefitted from a surprise difference in strategy. Hall-of-Famer Gary Stevens, it appeared, opted to have the pace set and then retaliate with a furious finish, something not expected with the runner. A fantastic race for the connections but still a bit surprising with the horse appeared to be doomed at one point in a competitive field. The 6-year-old gelding has amassed over $1.2 million in 22 lifetime races. Stevens is around 25% at the meet, a strong number for anyone but especially a 54-year-old.

Lone Star (Texas):
  • The combination of Mike Smith/Bob Baffert won the Lone Star Handicap with Danzig Candy. Texas Chrome finished second. Smith had one ride today and was 3-for-6 the last two days.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Luca!! Luca Panici was given multiple good horses with chances for wins, sizing the competition, and claimed two victories on the 11-race card including the finale. In that race, bombs came in 2nd, 3rd and 4th including the runner up who was nosed out of first. The $1 superfecta returned over $5,600. With a 2-to-1 winning, that price is mind-boggling.
  • Tight three-across-the-wire finish in the opener.
  • The carryover for Memorial Day will be more than $465,000. I bet the powers-that-be find that disturbing. Humor meter is now off.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 7: The $1 superfecta returned $129,554.50. The $2 exacta paid $819. The $2 trifecta paid $6,058. The runner up was 71-to-1 and paid $45.60 for place.
  • Race 10: $2 Pick 5 paid $54,760 and the ticket was topped by a very close photo finish.
  • Chalk up three more wins for Corey Lanerie.

Pimlico (Maryland):
  • The very brief meet closes tomorrow, Memorial Day.
  • Cassidy Burg, who I don't recall riding outside of Golden Gate or Penn National in her young career, won the opener today on board a 7-to-1. It was a skilled stretch finish, nice job. She had two rides and finished third at 67-to-1 in race 7. She is a bug and has 12 lifetime victories, I believe is still a teenager.
  • Race 3: A 60-to-1 finished second. The prices included $38 for place and over $18k for a $1 super.
  • Race 5: The $2 Pick 5 paid over $40,000.
  • Race 6: The winner returned more than $74. The trainer appears to have won for the first time ever, in 4 starts.
  • Race 10: The $2 Pick 5 paid $29,725.40.

Presque Isle (Pennsylvania):
  • A $2 superfecta returned $33,000+.
  • Jeremy Rose has moved his tack from Penn to Presque Isle. He won twice in six rides.

Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • There was an objection/inquiry involving a runner named Sinatra. Isn't that sacrilegious in New Jersey?!
  • Race 3: There was an $85.60 winner. The $2 Pick 3 paid $4,057.870. The 4 double was a shocking $1,490.80.
  • Race 4: The $2 Pick 3 paid $6,128.
  • Race 5: The $1 Pick 5 was $48,851 or more than $97,000 for a $2 bet. The $2 Pick 4 paid $29,229. The $2 Pick 3 was $1,934.
  • Through Sunday, Paco Lopez is only 25 3-5-7. He usually tears up Monmouth.

Belmont (New York):
  • Trainer Bill Mott had two starters and won consecutive races with them
