That Meruelo interivew was so hilarous and embarrassing just wow. Bettman is such a fool. An idiot to be honest.

I think the only reason this fool is in the NHL is so Bettman has a guy that can launder his money. God what a terrible way to show the NHL in an area like Arizona

This offseason the oilers will get rid off Ceci, Kulak, Kane, Foegele. I’m unsure of Campbell as I don’t think the team wants anymore dead cap. Kane will be replaced by Holloway and Broberg will take Kulak’s spot. Maybe they run Perry back and Lavoie gets a shot.
I agree. This would be best case for Edmonton I think. The cycle of never being able to insert prospects into the roles of fading core players needs to stop.

Kane has a NMC until March, 2025. I think they move on from Kane in summer of 2025 (so next summer) which will help make space for the Drai and Bouchard contracts kicking in. Kulak I agree is likely gonzo this summer though, as replacing him with Broberg saves about $2 million and doesn't really make the team worse either. I also doubt they re-sign Foegele as he'll want too much. Holloway replaces Foegele in this scenario. Ceci I could see them getting rid of, depending what happens with Vinny's contract negotiations. If Vinny is wanting a lot, they either let him walk, or trade Ceci.

Campbell I have no idea what they'll do with. I'm guessing a buyout, but it wouldn't SHOCK me to see them run with him next year, hoping he looks good in the NHL, and they can offload him to somebody for a smaller sweetener (like a 2nd or 3rd round pick), compared to the massive bribe they would currently have to pay to get rid of him. But buyout still seems the most likely.

Unless they think there is a legitimate chance that Campbell either retakes the starter's role or plays well enough to be traded a $5M back-up is already dead cap space. Now if he plays well in the playoffs in the AHL they may be able to move him with some creativity. But it will mean either some retention or taking on another bad deal.

After this season, I think it could be possible Kane looks where there may be more icetime. He's probably gotta worry a bit about what's out there for his next contract. And in Edmonton, I don't think those top six assignments will be coming as easily for him as time progresses.

Honestly think 3 years is too much term for VD.

2 years max. Team has been burned way too many times signing role players.

No way… you go term and lower the aav. This guy has some of the best defensive stats in the league.. and guess what he’s done that every level starting in the ECHL…

At some point it’s just real and we can lock him up under $2 if we commit to four… and why not? He’s not going to lose the ability to pk at an elite level.

There is no way they hold on to Kane for another year. There is just too much baggage with this player. You have him complaining about ice time, getting into it with players on the bench, his ex having to be escorted from a game (not his fault but part of the issues the follow him), and his ex constantly tagging McDavid and calling him a player that sleeps around. Connor is a quiet person and just wants to play the game. I’m sure he is done with all this. Leon clearly is. I just don’t see him back.

The thing with Campbell is this team can’t afford dead cap. They also didn’t call him back up to see if he got his head straight. I think having a season with Rodrigue as his coach has been great. I get Pickard was playing well, but he is a journey back up and not finding out Campbell is was a a huge mistake

Campbell playing in the AHL is dead cap space, like 4 million every year. The buy out is less and it gets pushed down the road a few years, when the cap should be higher. Jack will be bought out this summer, guaranteed.

As for Kane, ya, everything is pointing to him being on his way out. Don't think the guy is a bad dude, just not everyone's cup of tea, and he seems to have a shelf life of 2 or 3 years. Hopefully he is motivated to show that he still has lots of game left, and steps up with a huge playoffs.

I just don't see any real reason to give a bottom pairing defender a 4 year deal. He's a #6. I don't know how often teams hand out long term contracts to these kinds of players but it seems hugely excessive to me.

Since 1260 had the plug pulled out of the wall, I don’t listen to Oilers sports talk anymore (can’t stream at work and don’t do the podcast thing). Has there been any chatter about Holland’s replacement as GM? There was Hunter talk (not the mascot-lol) a few months back but I haven’t seen much since talked about on this site.

33. Columbus’s fans, who stayed strongly loyal despite another tough season, deserve success. Obviously, the biggest decision is who will run things. The Mark Hunter rumours won’t go away, although he’s also a possible Ken Holland successor in Northern Alberta. The Blue Jackets will swing big in attempts to fill this job

Friedman's 32 Thoughts from the other day. Don't think we'll hear much until the run is over.

Thanks! Hunter will look at the rosters and hopefully that influences his choice over the money.
I would much rather he chooses Columbus. We don't need round 2 of a senile GM who has no idea how the salary cap works.

Thankfully with Nicholson's "promotion", they might actually hire someone that isn't one of his golfing buddies.

I had to look up how old he was after seeing this. I thought he was younger than 61…kinda late to be getting a crack at your first GM gig in the NHL.

I’m not sure who else is available either.

Why is he senile and how do you know he has no idea how the cap works?

How many playoff teams have GMs younger than 55? Like 1?

You make a good point but they’ve also worked their way up the ranks, he’s primarily ran junior teams, has he not?

At the end of the day, I don’t care who gets it, as long as they’re competent and don’t paint themselves into a corner with horrendous contracts like Chiarelli & Holland both did.

Young Dubas worked his way up the ranks too. Now all he's worthy of are gifs.

Hunter is 2 years younger than McCrimmon in Vegas and is just as ruthless. What we don’t need is a GM who wants to be friends with everyone else in the league. McCrimmon and Hunter are cut from the same cloth. They don’t give a F what anyone thinks

Dubas is not the same as Hunter. Hunter and McCrimmon are better comparables.

Hope this “Everyone must play Center” team build concocted at the TDL by Holland pays off. 2 games left in the season and we’ve already converted our 3C Henrique into a Top 6 winger…. Instead of just trading for a Top 6 Winger.

How’s everyone around here liking the Henrique/Carrick trades anyways?

I think they've both been good adds. An extra gear now would be great.
