I think the Isles should go after Chatfield. He's a UFA and would be fantastic on our blue line. He was only making 763k. I'm sure he's going to get paid, but would 4 years/3m per do it?

He's an empty calorie scorer. Guys like these are valuable in the bottom 6 surrounded by good defensive players and being PP specialists. There are better options to be had I'm sure.

Isles need a little more creativity to their roster building. A guy like Tsyplakov is a good start. You look at what the Panthers do, and every team should be emulating them. They consistently grab players off the garbage heap and make them into very useful pieces: Carter Verhaeghe, Gustav Forsling, Anthony Duclair, etc.

Lou did this with Engvall. Solid swing at a player that has the talent to be a 2nd line player. Hasn't necessarily panned out. He also did it with Rielly (more desperation). However, there is far more of getting guys with "strong" track records that are overpriced and overrated: JGP, Palmieri, Horvat.

There's nothing wrong with getting a few of the "fairly" priced guys like Horvat. However, when you load your team up with aging vets for things they have done in the past while ignoring the farm system and not trying to acquire "undervalued" projects, you become stale and irrelevant. The two words that describe the Isles best.

Stars and Panthers are excellent examples for the Isles. The Stars were in cap hell after Sequin/Benn contracts were fast becoming an albatross. All of a sudden they draft Hintz, Heiskenen, Oettinger, Johnston - now they're arguably the best team in the league despite the bad contracts. The Panthers signed Bob to an awful contract that looked to doom that franchise. However, they were able to trade and sign their way into becoming one of the best teams in the NHL. Their signings weren't the aging UFA types. They were the under the radar types.

Our GM isn't dumb, but he's not creative. He also doesn't seem to understand that the NHL is now played differently than it did when he won cups 30 years ago.
I wish I didn't post anything about Olofsson considering Lou signed Tsyplakov under 24 hours later. I think this is a better option for the same roster slot as I was suggesting in Olofsson.

But I love everything about your post.

Pass but moreso because I like MR more than Chatfield. He's gonna get picked up by the Rangers or Avalanche

Because Chatfield has similar offensive stats as Pulock but has much more of an edge, and he is much better than Mayfield.
Nah he's not better than a healthy scotty

Only Canes that I am interested in are
-Noesen (great gritty sandpaper guy)
-Teuvo (legit top 6 option)
-Chatfield (Depth and moves the puck)
-Necas (if you can somehow make Pulock/Pelech look very attractive to trade for)

Not sure what Carolina will do this offseason. They have issues with a bunch of their own FAs. 3 of their starting 6 Defensemen are FAs.

To the extent I paid attention to Necas specifically, I saw a guy with tremendous physical gifts and talent, but I do wonder a bit about his vision and head for the game. Not that he doesn't have that, but I recall a few times he carried the puck and then ran out of options and that was that.

A question I want to pose is would you rather retain 30-40% on Pageau and return an asset or not retain anything and return no assets?

At 3-3.5M per, Pageau as a 3C likely becomes attractive with the cap rising to 87.7M and would probably have multiple parties interested.

Barzal could hypothetically shift back to center, giving you Horvat-Barzal-Nelson-Cizikas down the middle.

Lou would be better off looking for the next Martinook/Noesen than signing the actual ones. Hopefully Chris L. can find another Fasching that can actually skate.

My concern is that Lou thinks he already has "more experienced" versions of Martinook/Noesen in Clutterbuck/Martin.

I'd retain, absolutely.

I don’t expect the asset to be much so I’d rather have the extra cap space.

Stefan Noesen would honestly be a better upgrade on wing than Anders and at half the cost, if not more

In what universe? A 31 year old journeyman who was playing in the AHL 2 years ago and who's never scored more than 14 goals in a season (despite playing with better talent around him)???

I'm fine with letting Lee go (not that you'll be able to), but all the focus and resources needs to be going to improving the 1st line - Not acquiring more middle/bottom 6 players.

He's still a useful player, just not at 5M

Do you honestly think he is useful? I find him absolutely useless. It is because of injuries but I do not see him ever scoring higher than 15 goals again. Even that is stretching it.

Compared to someone like CC or Martin? Sure. I think he's just a grit and glue guy. There's a case for him like any other player. I just like him because he's an asshole player that the islanders sorely miss.
