If the blues gave us shattenkirk for free right now it would do nothing to help us with the goaltending we are BUILT AROUND

With this forward group and what should be an elite goaltender as our franchise cornerstone we should be able to get away with the D we have it is not nearly as bad as henrik is making it look right now.

This isn't different than the last 3 seasons, except Henrik used to cover it up, now he's exacerbating it. We haven't had a good defense since 2013-14.

With regards to a big name defenseman, AV is a much bigger concern to me. Say we trade for Shattenkirk...how does AV use him?

This off season we should see a coaching change or at least a defensive zone coverage change... the last thing we need is to get deep in the playoffs not win and have our Defense style exploited and claim it's the personnel on D. Whatever we do just don't become Vancouver

The team needs to make a small upgrade right now for the defense. Like having a Shattenkirk or Vatanen would be a massive help, but realistically, those trades/deals/signings aren't happening until the summer

They need a small trade to get things going. Someone mentioned it in the last thread, but Pittsburgh made small moves last year for the defense and it got them going (circumstances are different but still). Some other guys and myself has championed for him, and I will do it again, but Gorton needs to go after a guy like Colin Miller. Guy is super solid, cheap, won't break the bank to trade for, and can play on any pairing.

Clendening needs to play consistently. Holden and Clendening was a solid pairing in the Montreal game. Klein has fallen off, but he is serviceable for what he is. Girardi needs to be benched. He is addition by subtraction. Guy cant skate, cant move the puck, and makes horrible decisions with the guy he supposedly covering.

Staal is injured, and while he isn't as trash as he was last year, he isn't that good, and isn't that much of an upgrade. Skjei needs to play on the bottom pairing to be effective right now. It's his first full year, there will be growing pains. I never thought he was going to be some second coming of McDonagh, but he will develop into the player the team needs him to be

At this point, assuming Staal stays out for concussion reasons longer than anticipated, rolling a defense of

McDonagh-Miller
Holden-Clendening
Skjei-Klein

is infinitely better than what is currently being iced. Hell, put Klein with McDonagh, and slide Clendening down to Skjei, and put Miller with Holden.

Something needs to happen. I am in the camp that this team won't win a cup as currently constructed, and no trade they make this season is going to change that. But a small trade like this would be an upgrade over what is currently happening.

The Rangers need RHD help badly, we all know this, I am not trying to be a laureate physicist. The problem like many have said is, what if Gorton gets one and AV has to decide ice time. I have no confidence in that guy to correct the flaws in his usage. ****, I think he's part of the reason management got rid of Stralman over Boyle-Girardi, whomever you want to argue they kept over AS or replaced him with. I really with they would get rid of him.

When hank is getting sniped by the Adam Cracknells of the league unscreened there's nothing nick lidstrom could do to help.

We need a righty D yes but this goes way beyond that

That definitely has to be his puck. Too often do we see players scoring on him short side. That's inexcusible. And we can't blame the defense for that, or the Sharp goal where he is out of position

People can say what they want. He is a righty Yandle. We saw how AV used Keith. We acquired a PP specialist and instead we were trotting out Boyle and MSL on the points. This coach is a clown. No cups for him. Only thing saving them is Shatts is a RH so I do think he will use him in the top 4 at least, but this is pointless to discuss. We don't have him. What we have is an a defense that is playing like they forgot how to defend. I mean let's be real, we were defending during those two Hawks games and that stretch very well. What happened here??

We just need to fix part of the defense and maybe change the core defensive system. Worst case scenario change the coaching staff and AV - send him to Canada, and get some new inspiration here with a completely new coach and D system. I think tank comments is just silly at this date related to future talents, and our team is one of the best in the league related to offensive hockey with our 4 lines when we are a healthy team.

People complain about AV just because they want to have something to complain about. It seems like every time the Rangers lose, his thread is bumped with the same complaining.

There are times when he makes bad decisions, but firing him? Why? Because he doesn't play Adam Clendening as much as you want? Because he didn't give Dylan McIlrath the ice time you wanted him to get? Neither player is an NHL top 6 defenseman. Multiple teams have thought that. In Clendening's case, 5 teams. Those are not fair criticisms of AV. What did you want him to do with Yandle on the left side? Take 10 minutes away from Staal and have him playing 10 minutes per game? It was a bad trade to begin with. We didn't need another LHD.

The defense isn't very good and the goalie isn't either. Thats not his fault. He didn't hand out contracts, he doesn't oversee the decline of certain players, he doesn't construct the roster. Can he maybe make some changes with the system? He could, but there really isn't much to blame him for.

Also, if you consider the season we've had, most people don't think about the Rangers season so dramatically in January. Its a long season. I think most who are not so radical in their viewpoints about the Rangers would admit that the Rangers have had a good season so far and AV has done a good job. A lot of people didn't even think we'd make the playoffs. We have the 8th most points in the league, and fourth best goal differential. Thats not a bad season so far. Those who want to complain about Dylan McIlrath, Adam Clendening, Yandle not getting more minutes in a situation where there weren't more minutes to give him are just not being fair to the coach. The team isn't playing well now, and its possible they won't turn it around the rest of the season, but wanting the coach fired? That makes little sense.

A new coach is not going to fix the glaring holes we have on defense and goaltending. A new coach is not going to all of a sudden make Lundqvist reach his old level.

Yes. I wouldn't even think twice. Tanev is a great D-man and Virtanen might be a boom-or-bust prospect but I am willing to take a gamble.

Yes, certainly, Klein ain`t worth much at this point though, and his decline this season is really frustrating. :)

Gorton can improve this defense without dismantling the forwards. That's if he finds some under the radar deal for an unappreciated player rather than trading for a name that will impress fans and the media.

Everybody talks about Pittsburgh's example, who did they get to improve their defense last year? 2 guys who were considered bad contracts.

Chicago couldn't wait to get rid of Daley and took Pens' version of Girardi back to facilitate the deal, Scuderi. Schultz was run out of Edmonton for being soft and error-prone. He wasn't going to be qualified, so Pens got him for something like a 3rd rounder.

So there's no need to diminish our strength by moving any of our regular forwards. Gorton just needs to be clever and find the right fit. He has already shown with the Holden trade that he's capable of it.

One team's cap killing garbage contract player is another team's top 4 solidifying, Stanley cup winning solution.

Fixing our goaltending situation on the other hand …:dunno:

Trade 1 - Kevin Klein + Adam Tambellini for Jujhar Khaira and a draft pick
Trade 2 (offseason) - JT Miller + Brady Skjei for Jacob Trouba and a draft pick
Puempel traded for a 6th/7th? If possible at draft
Las Vegas takes Jesper Fast

  • Pirri walks
  • Sign Shattenkirk as UFA in the offseason
  • Sign Aston Reese as the annual outta college steal
  • Resign Zinbad (6 year deal), Lindberg, Clendening
  • Promote Nieves and Graves

Lots of contract space. Can try some interesting names outta college, Europe and reclamations
Plus we have lots of cap space (presumably)
The cap situation for 2018 is however very messy - but that will have to be dealt with then
If Season next year goes sour then look into trading Zucc, Nash or Staal if possible

Yes. I wouldn't even think twice. Tanev is a great D-man and Virtanen might be a boom-or-bust prospect but I am willing to take a gamble.

Yeah, but he isn't a "boom" prospect. The kid is much more Wilson, if that, than like Kreider if you get what I mean.

I think he would have potential to thrive in NY, and I definitely think we could use his grit and jam. Who knows. But like Robin Kovacs is younger than Jake and have outscored him in the AHL this season for a reason. Virtanen is a complete stiff lol, and he doesn't have much between the ears.

Even then it wasn't great.

This team hasn't had great team defense since 2008.

I am curious as to what you guys think of this trade idea. I have sitting on this one for a while now and see this as an offseason move to retool our squad.

To Avs:
Derek Stepan
Brady Skjei
JT Miller
2nd 2018 (Ottawa)

To Rangers:
Matt Duchene
Tyson Barrie
3rd 2018

Sign Shattenkirk (if possible)
Buyout Girardi

Now here my out regarding this.

The reason we do this is to help out on the defence side of things first and foremost. Barrie is the kind of second pairing offensive D we are looking for. I say 2nd pairing because he is not really that great at D so that pulls him back from being in that elite top paring OFD class. The idea is then to buy out Girardi and sign Shattenkirk creating a top 4 of McD, Shatty, Barrie and Staal. The 3rd pair consists of whatever we have left over although I would like to move on from Klein.

I also think Duchene is the perfect center for the Rangers. His style suits us really well and seeing him on the 2nd line behind Z is a great 1, 2 punch.

Why the Avs do this. Stepan for Duchene is a bit of a wash and here is why. Apart from the one PPG season Duchene had, their stats are kinda similar, although Duchene is the superior offensive forward and a goal scorer while Step is the superior defensive forward and more of a playmaker. Duchene is also more injury prone and streaky. The Avs need to be more defensively responsible. Skjei is a good two-way top 4 d in my opinion and while struggling at times, he will grow into that roll. He is big, fast and way more responsible in his own end. If the trade were to end there it would be heavily in our favour which is why I added in JT.

The thinking here is to not only overpay a little from our side but also incentivise the Avs. By adding JT they can replace Landeskog's production mostly while flipping him for another top 4 d to help solidify their roster. We will miss JT but feel we have enough in our forward group to not suffer heavily with losing him. Lastly I then move us down in the draft in 2018 (I trust the scouting staff) and move Colorado up in the draft because I feel this evens out the value in total.

I don’t think this will be a popular trade proposal but I do believe its got some potential. If I am perfectly honest though I think its too ambitious for the Avs and that most of their fans would not be happy with it. Your opinions?

I could @SouthernRanger. I`m not sure if this move would help Rangers or Colorado - our defense is still really fragile. When you buyout a player like G - you need someone to replace him for sure even a young promising prospect like Trouba. I don`t understand your reasoning to add Barrie & Duchene instead of Miller & Stepan, and then give Skjei free for what reason? If we are going to move Skjei - we need him in a defensive upgrade move in near future like late March before the deadline, and before possible playoffs events.

We are not built around our goalie. If we were, our defense would not be utter crap. You build around your goalie by having a defence that can actually play sound defense and a forward group that is 1000% dedicated to backbreaking.

That is not the Rangers....at all
