Leslie saying that Gabriel Fontaine may get a look to start at C for this season too. I remember when he was a wasted draft pick the second we took him :sarcasm:

Book on him is that he's a low floor low ceiling type of player.

A kid that embraces a checking role.

Would be great if he could surprise.

I'd be happy with Vanek or Chiasson. Vanek for depth and he can still put up points and Chiasson works hard and was pretty solid last year. Would be really happy with either.

Really, REALLY dislike this team down the middle. Weak. Can't see that being resolved adequately until next summer or, possibly depending on where we're at, at the trade deadline.

Why wouldnt they be able to at the deadline? There will be Centers who are due for free agency

According to capfriendly Mika has a NMC starting in two years and runs through the end of the contract

They just updated the contract so they must have confirmed with someone

If we had managed to keep Lindberg then the warts would not be as bad as they are now. I am sure it will be addressed one way or the other.

Same old team, even with Shatty and a few other additions, we are going to get smoked this year, nothing even slightly threatening when looking at the Center depth.

Shattenkirk in and Girardi out is a humongous upgrade. Center depth leaves a lot to be desired but I think Gorton has done a fantastic job this offseason.

Gorton started the process of getting younger and rebuilding on the fly. It looks like the Rangers made a really solid pick in Chytil to go along with Andersson. Brassard for Zibanejad. In my opinion, you build your team with young players. The Rangers should look at trading Zuccarello between now and the trading deadline/2018 draft. Get a blue chip quality young player. Trade Nash at the deadline for a #1 in 2018. The Rangers can pick players in the first round. Good draft. Lousy draft. They find the players. Two more quality young players in the first round. The young player acquired for Zuccarello. Now we're talking rebuild on the fly. Add some of the Rangers current young roster players. Andersson. Chytil. One or two of the young D become legitimate NHL players. ADA. Bereglazov. Pionk. How about the Rangers making a 2nd and 3rd round pick for a change. Keep the picks.

Jagr or Vanek. Maybe Chiasson. Maybe Winnik. Da Costa if you want a Center. Forget the rest

I don't know why anyone would sign Jagr. He's 40-****ing-5. He can't keep up and should have retired already. At best he's a power play specialist.

I agree with you, really treading water. Got back some lackluster futures too, but at least it's something.

Chances are we won't be affected by it too much but its the principle of tying your hands when you don't have to

It's not like Gorton just offered it because he's nice. It's a negotiation and trade protection is a large part of the negotiation. Stepan just got traded shortly before his NMC kicked in. NMCs aren't really a problem. Players regressing is a problem, but Zib isn't likely to regress any time soon. Hopefully he's still trending upward.

Take away the NMC and the AAV is undoubtedly higher, and/or the term is shorter.

His numbers are excellent. It's a joke that he hasn't been signed yet. I don't care about his age if he can still play.

I do agree that Gorton the last two off-seasons has done the right thing, no doubt... But we are in for a real treat this year if Zib is our #1, and we have a bunch of players competing not only for 4C, AND 3C, but 2C as well?!

While I appreciate the optimism, let me just try to set expectations: The Rangers are further away this year than they are closer. And that's fine, build this up for 2019-2020/2020-2021...

I think the issues are Jagr wants a decent amount of money for a 1 year contract and he runs out of gas by March.. He isn't a go-to guy, but the dude still drives play. He's still a bull on the puck and slows the game down to open up space for his teammates. If you can get him and keep him rested and fresh with around 55-60 games, he should still be able to give you 45-50 points.

Jagr is still decent, but how can the guy, who has been in the league for 20+ years, keep up with fresh legs and young gunners? The entire league has transitioned to speed now.
