On the Neilson show this morning Rishaug discussed the assistant coaches and apparent power struggle over if they are to be retained and the OBC inserting one of their own into the coaching mix.

In his conversation he said a GM from another team stated TMac has made the decision he is not bringing Jim Johnson back (not a firing, his contract won’t be renewed).

If this is the case does this mean Coffey will be the new D coach?

Update
Referenced Specs piece and agrees with it
Nielsen said Dean Millard got a DM from another NHL exec that JJ was gone

Woodcroft and Mclellan are a package deal. If Woodcroft goes, Mclellan goes.

I think Jim Johnson should be fired. Dont get me wrong.

But at least the guy somewhat fixed the PK in the last 1/3 of the season. Not to mention that they were #1 on the road and #31 at home. Which sort of means it kinda worked.

The PP never worked this year. It was never fixed at any point. So why would Woodcroft even be considered? Because hes TM's best friend?

Ridiculous.

Penalty kill seemed to get better since Coffey arrived. Powerplay still useless.

Its still nowhere as good as it should be. Its beyond predictable. And at the end the coaches just gave up.

This team is so screwed.

Woodcroft coming back is the biggest fail if true. Guy couldn't figure out how to get a PP with McDavid and Draisaitl on it to be average.

Especially cause they would have to re-sign Woodcroft. Not even a firing.

Instructions are probably always "get it to Mcdavid and do stuff"

Maybe they can try "The Flying V" next season. Would probably be more effective than anything they have drawn up as Oilers coaches.

Just wondering, if Woodcroft is so bad why were we 5th in PP last season? The only change was Eberle but he can't be the only reason we went from 5th to last.

1) They moved Draisaitl out of the high slot for some reason
2) Opposing teams adjusted to take away the cross crease pass to Letestu and Woodcroft didn't have an answer.

They are also really predictable imo. Nothing ever changes. Its like watching the same thing over and over. Pass around the outside. Force cross crease pass down low to Lucic who has no hands.

Well apparently he didn't even coach the #1 unit in SJ. He just put Thornton, marleau, pavelski, couture, burns together and let them do whatever.

One of Nicholson's job was to provide oversight from a voice that's disassociated from the good ol' days. If this report is true, and now there are corroborating reports, I suddenly have a little sympathy for Chiarelli and McLellan.

McClellan, by his own words, delegates the majority of responsibility to Woodcroft not just PP pretty much everything, so as long as McClellan stays so does Woody.
