Drafted: 3rd Round, 78th Overall, 2008 - Calgary Flames

Career with Flames:

This was my other semi-questionable one.
In my eyes, however, Bouma is the second-best defensive forward to ever dress for the Flames, not just in the past 15 years. The guy in front of him won a Cup with the Flames in 1989 - Joel Otto. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill, but Bouma his donned them with style. Bouma is currently first among Flames forwards, and tied for eleventh in the league, in blocked shots, hovering around names like Ryan Getzlaf, Joe Pavelski, David Backes and Gabriel Landeskog. Last year, Bouma finished second among forwards, tied with Getzlaf. Not only that, but after the All-Star break, Bouma finished first in the whole league in forward shot blocking. Bouma also brings offence to the table: last year, he scored 15 points in 78 games. This year, Bouma has contributed 10 points already in 39 games, on pace for over 20 points, a career high. He also wins games for the Flames - he has one game-winner already this year.
While he isn't the most conservative choice for #45, Bouma is the right one, and that is why he is here.

Stoke me a clipper.
It's my list, but I'm sorry.

Feeling that you deserved benefit of the doubt (as I hadn't gone through and found 50 players over the past 15 years) I figured I'd better at least put up or shut up. Spinning through HockeyDB, I found more than 50 that I'd consider for the top 50 - and left off many more who I'd consider better than Dawes...

Jarome Iginla, Marc Savard, Valeri Bure, Cory Stillman, Phil Housley, Derek Morris, Chris Clark, Robyn Regehr, Mike Vernon, Fred Brathwaite, Roman Turek, Denis Gauthier, Dean McAmmond, Craig Conroy, Dave Lowry, Steve Reinprecht, Martin Gelinas, Rob Niedermayer, Shean Donovan, Jamie McLennan, Rhett Warrener, Chris Simon, Miikka Kiprusoff, Dion Phaneuf, Tony Amonte, Kristian Huselius, Daymond Langkow, Jordan Leopold, Roman Hamrlik, Alex Tanguay, David Moss, Mark Giordano, Matthew Lombardi, Adrian Aucoin, Cory Sarich, Curtis Joseph, Todd Bertuzzi, Rene Bourque, Curtis Glencross, Olli Jokinen, Mikael Backlund, Jay Bouwmeester, Matt Stajan, Lance Bouma, Lee Stempniak, TJ Brodie, Mike Cammalleri, Jiri Hudler, Dennis Wideman, Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, Kris Russell, and probably Sam Bennett.

You'd consider Curtis Joseph for the top 50? He played nine games for us...

Most of those guys are on the list already, with the exception of a few, notably Niedermayer, Russell and McLennan.

Also, SHOOT! I forgot about Vernon's return! Can I rescind Dawes?

IGOR KRAVCHUK

Time with Calgary: November 10th, 2000 - July 1st, 2002
Statistics with the Flames (as of January 8th, 2015): 115 GP, 4 G, 30 A, 34 PTS, 23 PIM, -9
Acquired: Claimed off Waivers from the Ottawa Senators
Jersey Number(s) with Calgary: 25
Salaries with Flames: 2000-01 - $2,500,000, 2001-02 - $2,250,000
Other Teams: Chicago Blackhawks, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Ottawa Senators, Florida Panthers
Career Achievements: 2 Olympic Gold Medals (1988, 1992), WJC Gold (1986) WC Gold (1990) 1987 Canada Cup Participant, 1998 NHL All-Star
Drafted:

Career with Flames:

Igor Kravchuk was a splendid defensive defenseman with a solid offensive touch, that really helped propel Calgary into greater prominence in 2001-02, as well as helping solidify new goaltender Roman Turek's numbers. Kravchuk complimented Phil Housley quite nicely in his first season in Calgary, and was paired with multiple defensemen in his second and last season, including Petr Buzek, Denis Gauthier and Dallas Eakins. In Kravchuk's only full season in Calgary, he finished seventh on the Flames, and third among defensemen, in scoring, with 26 points in 78 games, good for a 0.333 PPG average; however, his defensive prowess was more stated: he finished with the fourth-best plus-minus on the team when factoring in only players who played more than seventy games. Kravchuk was a great defenseman who played his last good hockey with the Flames; therefore, he deserves the #44 spot on this list.

CHUCK KOBASEW

Time with Calgary: June 23rd, 2001 - February 10th, 2007
Statistics with the Flames: 210 GP, 34 G, 37 A, 71 PTS, 160 PIM, -18
Acquired: Drafted by Calgary in 2001
Jersey Number(s) with Calgary: 7, 19
Salaries with Flames: 2002-03 - 2003-04: $1,130,000, 2005-06: $901,740, 2006-07: $1,200,000
Other Teams: Boston Bruins, Minnesota Wild, Colorado Avalanche, Pittsburgh Penguins
Career Achievements: 2005 AHL All-Star, WJC Silver Medal (2002)
Drafted: 1st Round, 14th Overall, 2001 - Calgary

Career with Flames:

Chuck Kobasew played four seasons for the Flames between 2002 and 2006, and was a good defensive player for the Flames in that time. Kobasew played an integral part in the Flames' run to the Finals in 2004, playing 26 games en route to the Flames' eventual loss.
Following the lockout, Kobasew emerged as an important offensive player for the Flames, scoring 20 goals for the first time in his career, and eclipsing the 30-point plateau for the first time, also. The next season, Kobasew became more pass-oriented, recording 13 assists in his first 40 games, but he was traded to Boston halfway through the year with Andrew Ference for Wayne Primeau and Brad Stuart.
Despite the fact that Kobasew never turned into the offensive force that the Flames expected when they drafted him, he remained an effective player, and an integral one to their success.

Fun Fact: We once traded Wayne Primeau - one of the players we got in exchange for Kobasew - and the pick that turned into Brandon Saad for Anton Stralman, Colin Stuart and the pick that turned into Matthew DeBlouw. We then traded Stralman for Max Reinhart's draft pick. We got Max Reinhart for Chuck Kobasew.

TONY AMONTE

Time with Calgary: August 2nd, 2005 - c. 2008
Statistics with the Flames: 161 GP, 24 G, 48 A, 72 PTS, 83 PIM, -1
Acquired: Signed on August 2nd, 2005
Jersey Number(s) with Calgary: 10
Salaries with Flames: 2005-06 - 2006-07: $1,850,000
Other Teams: New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers
Career Achievements: NHL All-Rookie Team (1992), NHL All-Star (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001)
Drafted: 3rd Round, 68th Overall, 1988 - New York Rangers

Career with Flames:

When we signed Tony Amonte in 2005, he was in the twilight of his career. However, he still had some gas left in the tank: in 05-06, Amonte potted 14 goals and 42 points in 80 games, for a PPG average of 0.53. The next season was a bit more of a struggle for the then 36-year-old, as he still scored 10 goals, but his total number of points dipped down to 30, his lowest ever total. That can be attributed to the fact that he retired after that season, however. Amonte finished fourth on the Flames in points in 2005-06, and third among all forwards. In 2006-07, Amonte finished eighth on the Flames with his 30 points, sixth among all forwards. In two playoff runs with Calgary, Amonte scored four points - two goals and two assists - for the Flames against the Mighty Ducks and Red Wings.
Amonte makes the list due to his leadership and scoring prowess, and fits in at the #42 spot.

Technically I considered him yeah, but i think my list has over 50 players (53 or so?) so it doesn't really matter. I also put a grand total of about 5 minutes of thought into my "list" so don't take that as a slight either, it's apparent that you've put more thinking time into yours.

TODD BERTUZZI

Time with Calgary: July 7th, 2008 - July 1st, 2009
Statistics with the Flames: 66 GP, 15 G, 29 A, 44 PTS, 74 PIM, -13
Acquired: Signed on July 7th, 2008
Jersey Number(s) with Calgary: 7
Salaries with Flames: 2008-09 - $1,950,000
Other Teams: New York Islanders, Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers, Detroit Red Wings
Career Achievements: NHL First All-Star Team (2003), NHL All-Star (2003, 2004)
Drafted: 1st Round, 23rd Overall, 1993 - New York Islanders

Career with Flames:

When the Flames signed Bertuzzi in 2008, many people thought he was on his last legs. He'd just finished off a disappointing season in Anaheim, and he was signed off Waivers. Bertuzzi was signed to a deal worth just under two million dollars six days into free agency, a deal many thought was a massive overpayment.
His doubters were very wrong.
Bertuzzi had his best season since 2005-06, scoring 44 points in 66 games, averaging a 0.667 PPG average. Amazingly, he finished sixth on the Flames in scoring, due to Calgary having an exceptionally deep team, with nine players (yes, nine) scoring 39 points or more (I would've said 9 with 40 points, because I thought David Moss scored 40 points that year - that was his 20-goal year - but he got 19 assists to go along with those 20 goals).
During his time in Calgary, Bertuzzi established great chemistry with two other 40-point scorers, Daymond Langkow and Rene Bourque, and the Flames made the playoffs for the last time. In the post-season, Bert contributed 2 points en route to a Flames' first round loss.

I will always remember the sick backhander of an OT goal Big Bert scored against Minnesota, set up by a diving pass by Langkow.

Statistics with the Flames: 126 GP, 14 G, 50 A, 64 PTS, 144 PIM, +30
Acquired: Signed on August 12th, 2005
Jersey Number(s) with Calgary: 4
Salaries with Flames: 2005-06 - 2007-08: $3,500,000
Other Teams: Tampa Bay Lightning, Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals, New York Rangers
Career Achievements: Olympic Gold Medallist (1998), NHL All-Star (1996, 1999 and 2003)
Drafted: 1st Round, 1st Overall, 1992 - Tampa Bay Lightning

Career with Flames:

A pillar on the back end, Roman Hamrlik was one of the Flames’ greatest possession players after the lockout, garnering an astonishing +30 in two seasons with the club. Stripping #4 from Jordan Leopold, “Hammer” was also a strong offensive defenseman, registering over 25 points in both of his seasons in Calgary - topping out at 38 points in 2006-07. Hamrlik served as a mentor to young defensemen such as Dion Phaneuf and Mark Giordano during his time in Calgary, and boasted a great reputation around the league. Hamrlik and Owen Nolan are the only first overall picks since 1980 ever to play for the Flames.

I hate Roman Hamrlik.

The only player I can safely say I absolutely loathe.

I'm glad his career is over and will fade away into obscurity. Useless plug

I loved to hate on Hamrlik, but his tenure as a Flame wasn't too bad; arguably it was pretty good. I probably would have him ranked higher than 40 myself, but this is Scorpions list. I'm interested to see who will be ahead of Hamrlik.

Hamrlik was a key reason why Phaneuf developed as quickly as he did and became a Norris nominee. The man was fantastic with young defensemen.
