You can include the #1 overall pick for 2020 if you like even if it hasnt been awarded yet (ie - assume it has been awarded and can be traded. Is it more valuable 1vs1 than others on your list? If so rank it)

Remember this is asset value so age, contract, ceiling, marketability and even health should count. Every criteria that you can think of.

Also - try to think in a vacuum. If you're an Avs fan and think because of contract you dont even trade Mack for Mcdavid 1 for 1 - dont say Mack unless you believe thats also the majority opinion around the league (that Mack > McDavid value). If you do thats fine.

Also - if you happen to really value tremendously some player you feel is underrated - he probably doesnt belong here. This is who you feel is most valuable as an asset around the league - not who "should" be most valuable.

Last thing - dont discount older stars like Crosby and Ovechkin too quickly. Marketability, leadership and "win now" could definitely still have them crack this list.

Curious to see what people come up with

Here's my clumsy first attempt at this.

1. Mcdavid
2. Mackinnon
3. Matthews
4. Dahlin
5. Kucherov
6. Crosby
7. Seth Jones
8. Barkov
9. Eichel
10. 2020 1st overall pick

Edit: forgot Barkov initially.

not sure where they'd slot in but 1 of:

Pastrnak locked up for 4 more years at 6.67 per year

or

Marchand locked up for 6 more years at 6.125 per year

should be in there

Wow this is tough, I feel like most lists will get torn apart by everyone else. I'll give it a shot, but I'm expecting lot's of backlash. I won't include the first overall pick next year as I assume there's atleast 10 players in this league that wouldn't be traded for first overall.
1. McDavid
2. Mackinnon
3. Kucherov
4. Crosby (marketability + win now put him ahead of some younger guys)
5. Ovechkin (same as crosby)
6. Matthews (marketability + age)
7. Hedman
8. Dahlin
9. Barkov
10. Vasilevsky
Okay I definitely forgot some people but that's my best guess.

Missed Pettersson

Dont have either of those 3 in my top 10. I think Pastrnak and Pettersson are really close tho definitely top 20 maybe even top 15

Marchand i think is slightly lower still. He's older and his reputation hurts his value at least somewhat i feel

1. McDavid
2. MacKinnon
3. Dahlin
4. Jones
5. Barkov
6. 2020 1st overall (assuming Lafreniere is closer to Crosby/Tavares than J. Hughes)
7. Kucherov (cap hit is high relative to others, but he's 26 and has 8 years remaining on his contract)
8. Pettersson (two years of ELC skew this)
9. Pastrnak
10. Crosby

HM: Slavin - he's on a top-10 contract in the league, but wouldn't hold the league wide value as per the thread criteria. Heiskanen should be considered for the same reason as Pettersson.

Matthews, Marner and Eichel are worthy of being here, but their (potential) contracts remove them from being in the top-10. Ovechkin will be 34 to start this season.

I think your 1/2 are right but Matthews contract would have him below a lot of guys on your list. I'm also not sure Crosby is actually 7th at his age anymore.

1. McDavid - best player in the game bar none
2. MacKinnon - top 3 player and best non-elc contract
3. Kucherov - best winger and on an underpaid contract
4. Petterson - Calder winner on ELC
5. Dahlin - great rookie year on ELC
6. Heiskanen - same as Dahlin
7. Hedman - Norris winner on a deal almost as good as MacK
8. Jones - 3 more years at $5.4M AAV for a true 1D entering his prime
9. Barkov - 2- way stud at 5.9 AAV, could honestly be higher
10. Crosby - still the most recognizable superstar and 2nd best player in the league

HM: Matthews, Eichel, Marner, Barzal

I favored guys on ELCs or players outperforming their cap-hits due to the cap space being at such a premium.

1. Customer base willing to pay 6-7 times the average ticket price;
2. Season ticket holders that have held tickets for generations and will likely continue to sell out even when the team is at its worst;
3. A franchise that operates in the top 1 third of the leagues operating income;

To simplify, this franchise is in itself the most valuable asset.

I feel like Dahlin is too damn high on these lists.

He was the best draft eligible D prospect in 50 years and just posted arguably the best 18-year-old rookie season by a defenseman since Bobby Orr. He's tracking to become something very special. Plus, he's only 1 year into his ELC with several RFA years ahead of him after that. I'd say he's pretty valuable commodity.
