Junior players that first became draft eligible in 2004 should, theoretically, have been eligible to be signed as UFAs starting 7/1/05 (in other words, after they went undrafted in the HFNHL for two years).

NCAA players, on the other hand, don't become eligible to be signed as UFAs until the free agency period after they've graduated/dropped out.

Of course, I can't recall whether or not the new CBA changes any of this!

Just to elaborate on Matt's response ...

The draft eligible age for NA players spans just over 2 years. This summers draft eligible age will be 01/01/86 to 09/15/88 so unless they are playing, or have played, in the NCAA this year anyone with a birth date earlier is eligible to be signed now.

Look for an update soon on changes to FA eligibility for European players over the age of 22.
