As the roster cut downs continue, it's interesting to see which prospects are still in with a shot of making the opening day rosters.

For the Flames:

DAL

Radek Faksa - He's been a physical force and might be a good fit for a bottom six role right away.

DET

Dylan Larkin - He's been impressive and the Datsyuk injury may open the door for him to start the year in the bigs.

NSH

Austin Watson - Waiver eligibility protects him but he's a force on the penalty kill and can snipe. Will be a valuable third liner.

NYI

Mathew Barzal - Survived another round of cuts today and has been one of the best forwards in camp.

SJS

Mirco Mueller - Technically still a prospect. I actually wouldn't mind if he was sent down to the AHL for a season.

WSH

Stanislav Galiev - He's been good and has the advantage of needing to clear waivers if the Capitals do send him down.

Who's surviving amongst your prospects?

Pens Prospects still in NHL camps:

Joonas Donskoi SJS RW - currently auditioning on the JOE-NAS line with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski.

Ben Hutton VAN D - 22 year old drafted NCAA product has had 4 assists in the preseason and is still on the team. Expected to start season in the AHL although the coach likes his play!

Brendan Gaunce LW VAN - Former first rounder is a candidate to replace the injured Chris Higgins after a solid training camp.

Sven Baertschi LW VAN - An ok camp but after trading a 2nd rounder for the player and without waiver options, Sven is expected to start as the Canucks 2nd line LW.

Max Domi LW ARZ - The goal starved Coyotes are counting on this young player being a significant contributor on a scoring line.

Alex Grenier RW VAN - Hulking winger still with the big club but after a brief audition with the Sedins has been moved down to a 4th line. Expected to be in the AHL after training camp but still with the big club.

Frank Corrado D VAN - without waiver options, expected to spend the season with the NHL team despite a so/so training camp.

Wild Prospects at camps

Connor Brickley/Quinton Howden - Both are fighting for 4th line spots but from reports, it sounds Brickley has been impressive while Howden has been quiet.

Viktor Arvidsson/Colton Sissons - Both are fighting for spots on Nashville (if they have a spot open...). Sissons 2 goals in 3 preseason games but Arvidsson not only has 3 points in 3 games but also carried over from a dominant performance at the rookie camp. He has a better chance than Sissons.

Nate Schmidt - Not exactly a prospect age-wise but I consider him as one. He is having a good camp and a likely bottom pairing defenseman for the Capitals.

Tim Schaller - Like Schmidt, not exactly a prospect but still counts here. Not much news on him but theres a lot of competition and question marks for the Sabres on the 4th line, anything goes.

Jack Eichel - Buffalo

Pretty duh one, here. He was going to start in the NHL from day one.

Sam Reinhart - Buffalo

Another pretty easy call to make the roster. The former 2nd overall pick will be allowed to develop quietly with all eyes on Eichel.

G Connor Hellebuyck - Winnipeg

Some consider Hellebuyck to be the best goaltending prospect not in the NHL. Winnipeg is in a unique situation where the albatross of Pavelec might prevent them from allowing this guy to make the club.

Jonathan Marchessault - Tampa Bay

Former UDFA signing JAM might have found a home on the bottom lines for Tampa Bay after an impressive stint towards the end of last year. Mostly known as a skill player in the AHL, JAM plays with enough of it to not be a Top 6 or bust player.

Alex Khokhlachev Boston

Another guy right on the cusp is KoKo. He made a bit of a stir by making the insinuation that it was either Boston or the KHL for him earlier in the offseason, but KoKo remains in Boston for now.

In other news, Washington's 61st overall pick in the 2015 draft, defenseman Ryan Pilon, has retired from hockey citing a lack of passion for the sport. This might explain his precipitous drop in the draft in real life... which would have been helpful to know. Washington retains his rights in case he changes his mind though it's unlikely that players that retire for this reason ever become productive NHL players.

For the Canucks:

JT Miller, Jesper Fast, Beau Bennett, Matt Nieto, Mike Hoffman: All signed as prospects in the HFNHL and locks for the NHL going forward.

Tyler Graovac: Fighting with Brett Bulmer for the final forward spot it appears. Has had a so-so camp.

Anton Slepyshev: Has impressed since rookie camp, getting better as he adjusts. Has played with McDavid at times. Good chance to break camp with the big club, especially if Eberle's injury is serious.

Jake McCabe: Likely to make Buffalo out of camp, just a question of his role.

Evgeni Medvedev: Medvedev is basically a lock for the blueline, just a question of his role. Smooth transition so far.

Mike Matheson: Still in camp, less likely than McCabe and Medvedev to start in the NHL. Showing well so far though.

Brian Ferlin: Still hanging around camp, competing for a fourth line job in Boston. Waiver exempt so probably a long shot.

Scott Wilson and Anton Zlobin: Wilson, like Ferlin, is about 50/50 for a fourth line spot. Zlobin remains in camp but will almost certainly be re-assigned.

Derek Ryan and Joakim Nordstrom: Both competing for bottom six spots in Carolina.

Mitch Callahan and Tomas Nosek: Both are still in camp with Detroit. Callahan has a chance at a fourth line spot, Nosek less so as he doesn't have to clear waivers.

Adam Erne, Emile Poirier and Jakub Vrana: All just sent down. Poirier is the biggest surprise of the three.

Thomas Chabot: Still in camp with Ottawa, drawing praise from the coaching staff and playing exhibition games with Karlsson, but most likely headed to Saint John this weekend.

Hurricanes still at camp

Jack Campbell - Realistically isn't going to make the Stars this year. He's only still around in case of injury, will be their AHL starter this year.

JC Lipon - In a battle with two other players (Nic Petan and Thomas Raffl for the final roster spot in Winnipeg. Raffly hasn't be signed to a NHL contract yet and I get the feeling that the Jets would rather Petan play first line minutes in the AHL instead of 4th line in NHL.

Chris Breen - He was already cut earlier in camp and just recalled. It's not likely he makes the Bruins out of camp just there for injury purposes at the moment.

Mike Reilly - He is in a battle for the final spot on the opening night lineup with Christian Folin. I think that the Wild would like to give him some time in the AHL though.

Patrik Nemeth - He will break camp with the Stars was a regular with them last year before a major injury and again when he returned.

Robbie Russo - Not likely going to make the club just to many guys/veterans in front of him. So for now he's getting good experience, but he will be in the AHL to start the year.

For the Blues:

Johan Larsson (Buff), Alexander Burmistrov (WPG) and Viktor Tikhonov (CHI) should all make the opening night roster, although Larsson could be a surprise casualty with a suddenly rather deep center position in Buffalo.

Anthony Duclair seems slotted for a top 6 spot in Arizona and it would be a big surprise at this point for him to be sent down.

William Karlsson and Kerby Rychel remain with the Blue Jackets, although they have a pretty stacked forward group, so they are both likely late cuts. But evidently make it tough for the coaches. http://bluejackets.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=780777

Shane Prince and Matt Puempel remain with the Sens, although it is unlikely they both last, Prince has been a bit better in camp and is also not exempt from waivers, so he seems pretty likely to stay. There is seemingly a spot for him as the 12th or 13th forward.

Charles Hudon is still with Montreal and while he might have a shot to make the team, he was on the outside looking in before camp, so he may just end up an early call-up.

In the end, I only expect Duclair, Burmistrov, Tikhonov, Larsson and Prince to make their respective opening night rosters, with that order being the ranking of their relative opportunity for impact come opening night.

And yeah, all forwards.

For the Panthers...

Colin Miller - Playing a ton and playing well in the preseason for Boston. Considering he was a main piece to the Milan Lucic trade, they may want to play him. With all the injuries in Boston, seems like he's done his part to crack the opening night roster.

Nick Paul - Seems to be battling for the 4th line center role in Ottawa in his first professional season. Has drawn rave reviews from the coaching staff.

Mike Condon - Has been fantastic in the preseason so far and the organization is very high on him. May beat out Dustin Tokarski for the backup role.

Matt Murray - Also batting for the backup spot behind MA Fleury, after a fantastic year in the AHL.

Robby Fabbri - Seems destined to at least get the 9 game stint and also seems likely he sticks and could have a very strong rookie season.

For the Kings:

Colton Parayko (STL), Andrew Copp (WIN), Mattias Janmark (DAL) and Brett Kulak (CAL) all basically stole spots on their respect NHL clubs this preseason and made their teams' 23-man rosters. Most predictions had all four starting the season in the AHL/back to Sweden.

Well, looks like William Karlsson made the opening night roster for the Blue Jackets (a surprise), although his 4 point night on the weekend probably helped. Rychel and Hudon were the only two of the above group sent down, so looks like as many as seven of the Blues forward prospects will be up with the big club opening night. I do think Puempel, and likely Karlsson, will be sent down in due course though. Puempel perhaps as early as Thursday or Friday to start the season in the AHL, given he seems to not likely to dress opening night.

Only Watson, Larkin and Galiev left standing. Still pretty happy. Bjorkstrand had a good camp, and scored when called up even after his demotion. Just no spots in the top 6 in Columbus. Mueller, I'm okay with his demotion. He should have been sent back to junior last year. Barzal was good but defensively naive and needs development. Faksa was better than expected, especially considering he missed so much hockey last year. He's a freight train, reminded me a lot of a bigger version of Michael Ferland in the preseason game I watched. Thumbs up.

For me, Colin Miller, Robby Fabbri, Mike Condon, and Brandon Manning (somewhat surprisingly) all made it. Particularly happy about Condon beating out Tokarski for the back up role in Montreal. I've had trouble finding a consistent backup behind Jonathan Quick and have had to give up assets for that role. Be nice to actually have a home grown talent fill that void next year.

Howden and Brickley seem to both make it and are now linemates of Florida's 4th line. Newly acquired Arvidsson has also beaten out other potential Predators (Moses, Watson, Sissons) and is slated to play on either the 2nd or 3rd line but in an offensive role. Schmidt is no surprise on the 3rd pairing for Washington.

Decent depth players with a bright light with Arvidsson, who could turn out to be a good 2nd line goal scorer.

I'm not sure how he beat out Watson since Watson also made opening night rosters???

Not a whole lot going on for my prospects.

Ryan Pulock made the Islanders but likely only due to the injury to Hickey. Hopefully he gets a chance to play and keeps the spot but will likely be sent back down at some point.

Vlad Namestnikov made the Lightning and will hopefully get a full season in the NHL. I also hope he gets traded somewhere he will have a better chance to grab an offensive role.

Top picks Strome & Provorov were both sent back to their junior teams. Others like Mantha & Samuelsson were sent down to the AHL.

Ferlin, Wilson, Ryan, Callahan and Nosek were all late cuts for depth roles. Matheson will join Erne, Poirier and Vrana as top prospects in the AHL going for Mountain Dew endorsements.

Spooner is pretty much a lock for Boston's roster, after his late season play last year.

Shockingly, Davidson, Jordan, and Ferraro all snagged depth roles for their respective clubs. Mind you I'd be shocked to see most stick the whole year
