Players who had stats in a game (or over a few games) that you wouldn't have expected from them

I don't think anyone expected the undrafted, unheard of Andrew Hammond to go 20-1/1.79GAA/.941 SV% down the stretch of the 2015 season.

He actually got some Hart votes that year. Finished 15th. And it wasn't just a homer vote from someone in Ottawa. He got one 4th place finish and 6 5th place finishes. So at least a few felt he made enough of an impact that year. I guess it helps that 2015 was not a deep year for the Hart.

October 1, 2018, Enrico Ciconne got 43% of the votes that night.

What votes would that be for again?

fond memories of gus nyquist's hot streak in 2013-14. prior to january 18, 2014, he had 23 career points in 62 gp. then he scored 23 goals and 36 points in the next 29 games—best player in the league for about 10 weeks. never came close to that level again.

If you have access to confirm the following, perhaps you can verify.

I don't recall Harvey Bennett having four assists in a game against the Flyers and through multiple searches, his brother Curt had two to Harvey's three. Wire reports could have been insufficient or a change in scoring could have followed, but a game story mentions Harvey at 0-3-3 and Curt at 1-2-3.

Both UPI and AP accounts at the time list it as three assists in game stories and box scores. Could be, as stated, a change in scoring after the box score was submitted to wire services and following written summaries submitted to newspapers. Could also be an input error by NHL.com which is possible even if unlikely.

Jason Spezza on that infamous March 2004 game vs. Philly where they just all kept fighting in the 3rd period (man I miss the days when the NHL had passion and they could hate each other) had the most penalty minutes in the game out of anyone - 35. There are several seasons Spezza played where he had less penalty minutes all season than the 35 in this game.

Jason Spezza's 35 PIMs is still the single game record for individual penalty minutes by an Ottawa Senator.

Brashear had a 5- or 6- game scoring streak before being wacked on the side of the head.
He was on a two-game goal scoring streak. He was pointless that night and in the seven games previous to the two-game streak...

This is correct. Man, I had to look that up because I can't imagine a world where Brashear has a 6 game point streak. He had 13 points in 2000. If he had a 6 game point streak I can understand Marty whacking him with the stick, he doesn't want his old buddy Wayne's 51 game point streak threatened! :D

Dallas Drake once had 5 assists in a game against Detroit (when he was a Blue).

Doug Weight had 39 PIMs in a game against San Jose in 2000. That was the game where Marchment injured him and then Weight came back and jumped Marchment.

I always think one of the most statistically unlikely occurrences in NHL history—in terms of scoring—has to be Darcy Rota having a 30-point month in March, 1983, when he was with the Canucks. This is for a number of reasons:
— Rota was normally a 20-25 goal, around 35-40 point forward, per season
— Prior to March 1983, Rota had never scored more than 13 points in a calendar month (and he'd only managed that twice over nearly 10 seasons).
— Even though he was enjoying a career season in 1982-83, from Oct. 1982 to Feb. 1983 Rota was averaging well below one point per game
— The Canucks that year were 14th out of 21 clubs in terms of offense, and were a sub .500 team.
— His 30-point-month occurred one year and one week prior to Rota's FINAL career game.

Now, Stan Smyl also scored 31 (!) points that month, so obviously Rota's explosion was closely tied in with Smyl's. However, as a proven 30-35 goal guy, Smyl's big month seems quite less surprising. And Thomas Gradin, who was also a proven scorer, was close with 27 points, so clearly those guys had an Elvis-month. These were the NHL leading scorers in March 1983:
1. Gretzky -- 36 PTS (13GP)
2. Smyl -- 31 PTS (16GP)
3. Rota -- 30 PTS (16 GP)
4. Gradin -- 27 PTS (16 GP)
5. Dionne -- 26 PTS (16 GP)

I think that was right before Laforge had the canucks do the gauntlet drill that damaged his shoulder. Not sure what the exact date of that injury was

jaroslav svejkovsky probably on one of the lists above somewhere but his 4 goal game against buffalo at the end of the 97 season gave a lot of false hope. 23 goals in 113 games was the result.

Mike Rupp had a goal and two assists in Game 7 of the 2003 Cup final. He was in on all three goals in a 3-0 win. He had 8 career playoff points in 67 games but three of them were in the most important game of his life. On a side note I have no idea how he was the 9th overall pick in the 1998 draft. I know NHL GMs were obsessed about size back then to the point where they sacrificed skill, but 1998 was a good draft and plenty of good players were taken after him. He wasn't even a decent scorer in junior. But he did good the night he won the Cup.

I took my friends to a Devils/Kings game in 2009. On the drive home, the guy that my friends were raving about was Rupp who had no points in a 5-1 Devils win. I couldn't help but think this must have been what a scouting meeting might have sounded like back in 1998.

Rupp obviously had size and wasn't a terrible skater. With some open ice he showed off some dangles. As the THN draft preview said, I think GMs were blinded by the raw tools and dreamed about what Rupp might look like if he put everything together. Maybe something like what Todd Bertuzzi became?

Apparently the Islanders table was split between Rupp or Robyn Regehr. In the moment, the Isles were stacked with young D so they probably talked themselves into Rupp.

I was visiting friends in San Jose in 2009 and thought about going to a preseason game while I was in the neighborhood. I skipped the game but checked the box score and laughed when I saw Doug Murray had a hat trick.

Murray had seven goals in 518 career NHL games.

Didn't Aaron Voros start one season off with seven goals in the first month or something, only to end up with eight goals on the season?

Let me look into this....

In '08-'09, he had 7 goals and 12 points in his first 22 games. He then scored 1 goal and 4 points in his final 34 games and that was the end of the legend of Aaron Voros.
