I always think one of the most statistically unlikely occurrences in NHL history—in terms of scoring—has to be Darcy Rota having a 30-point month in March, 1983, when he was with the Canucks. This is for a number of reasons:
— Rota was normally a 20-25 goal, around 35-40 point forward, per season
— Prior to March 1983, Rota had never scored more than 13 points in a calendar month (and he'd only managed that twice over nearly 10 seasons).
— Even though he was enjoying a career season in 1982-83, from Oct. 1982 to Feb. 1983 Rota was averaging well below one point per game
— The Canucks that year were 14th out of 21 clubs in terms of offense, and were a sub .500 team.
— His 30-point-month occurred one year and one week prior to Rota's FINAL career game.
Now, Stan Smyl also scored 31 (!) points that month, so obviously Rota's explosion was closely tied in with Smyl's. However, as a proven 30-35 goal guy, Smyl's big month seems quite less surprising. And Thomas Gradin, who was also a proven scorer, was close with 27 points, so clearly those guys had an Elvis-month. These were the NHL leading scorers in March 1983:
1. Gretzky -- 36 PTS (13GP)
2. Smyl -- 31 PTS (16GP)
3. Rota -- 30 PTS (16 GP)
4. Gradin -- 27 PTS (16 GP)
5. Dionne -- 26 PTS (16 GP)
