Eeeeeeeeasy there big guy. There's good reasons for it, in both cities. Ottawa? Cuz they're an expansion team from the early 90s. Tons of residual Habs and Leafs fans from before expansion.

Raleigh is the home of the relocated northerners, as you know.

Exactly right. Which means that you're waiting for all of them to die.

Or maybe you should be more proactive than that.

You know what to do.

The lady behind the penalty box holding up the Jordan Staal picture when penalties are called is beyond weird.

I bet that's the same weird lady who posted that creepy ice bucket challenge video with all the player pictures at her pool.

When I was young, I, ummmm, I kinda took matters into my own hands. It was a one time thing.

suffering leads to beer. Beer leads to a highly questionable paternity suit but the possibility still exists as you have absolutely no recollection of that night.

8th best powerplay, still terrible team. #shocked

i hope this means we can finally start talking about what an awful 5-on-5 team this is every single year ever

i imagine that it would get talked about more if, every time the play went back to even strength, john would say something like "and the hurricanes have the 27th-best 5-on-5 goal differential the league, they are X at home and X at away. oh and btw they were 24th last year lol."

one of the major failings of hockey commentating and reporting in general. there's an obsession over stats like faceoffs, pp and pk%, shootouts, hits, blocked shots, the hometown and junior team of every player on the team, the speed of the zamboni, etc, but nobody bats an eye when a team is getting beat to a bloody pulp at even strength for a full decade.

When did a decade start meaning 34 years?

@jbk_ltd No idea how that happened. Attendance was 16,225. The NHL scorers got it wrong on the sheet.

Should be easy to confirm for whoever was there. A 5k difference is pretty easily noticeable.

If you look at 13-14, the Canes 5v5 goal differential was -14 over the season. This is in a data set that varies from -69 to +65 with an average of 0 and a stdev of 28.6. (Data slightly different between nhl.com and stats.hockeyanalysis.com)

The 13-14 Canes 5v4 goal differential was 25 over the season. This is in a data set that varies from 17 to 57 with an average of 36.9 and a stdev of 8.2.

The PP would get a lower grade than ES last year. ES would maybe get a C-/D+ and PP would get a F.

This year PP has improved quite a bit but ES is poor. With the PP performing well, I hope Peters will improve the ES numbers going forward.

right, but a team spends far more time at even strength than it does on the pp. the hurricanes are averaging just under 6 minutes of PP time/game this season.

i think a team being a C-/D+ at something that they are spending around 50 minutes a game on is more relevant than being an F at something they are doing for 6.

it's bizarre how little this gets discussed. like the ratio has to somewhere around 10000:1 in terms of PP:ES. i'm not even joking. it's that bad. there seems to be an obsession amongst fans and media to mercilessly abuse certain stats while ignoring the bigger picture. a few years ago faceoffs were a major issue to be discussed. it was solved and predictably it didn't change anything since the team had a major issue of sucking horrendously when the puck was in play (and faceoffs are wildly overrated anyway). then it was the powerplay. since that has been at least momentarily fixed, it will now be the shootout. just wait until this team's next shootout loss. it will be weeks before people stop talking about how we've missed the playoffs by a few points so many times and it's all because of the shootout. or wait until the next time one of our players gets hurt on a questionable hit. do we need an enforcer? more team toughness? why didn't we dress brad malone so he could grit and leadership?

those numbers are just staggering and it's puzzling how nobody seems to care. they are more interested in chipping away at areas of relatively minor concern while ignoring a major one. is it because most don't really want to admit that this is team is atrocious and needs years and years before it can be fixed...and that they'd rather believe that all they need to do is score a few more shootout and PP goals to somehow squeak into the 8th seed?

and why do i type in all lowercase? god that **** is annoying

*raise of the hand* 13-season STH here with basically Forslund's view of the arena.

Definitely more than 15K in the building last night. No way the reported 11,225 was correct. 16,225 sounds more like it.

Ok this is good. 11k was making me question things.

I'd say it was closer to 16k than 11k.

Although a good 8,000 of them were Penguins fans.
