And how does a contraction work on player contracts ? Lets say a player with still 3 years on his contract. Do a specific team takes him and pays the rest of the contract. I mean you can't just force 23 persons with contracts to lose their job and not say anything. So...would the league cover somewhere around 40-50M in contractual compensation (for some players for more than one year) ?

While contraction could be something it is not free and far from it. Oh and...how about that schedule released last week...it's not gut anymore.

If a franchise is terminated, the team will be in breach of it's player contracts and under the Default clause (paragraph 12) of the SPCs, if the team does not cure the default within 14 days, the league has a 7 day window to assume any SPCs (if it chooses) and assign them as they see fit (dispersal draft, immediately stocking a new expansion team, etc). If the team doesn't cure the default and the NHL doesn't assume the SPCs, the contracts are terminated and the players become UFAs.

Edit: NTCs or NMCs would have no effect on the League assuming and assigning the SPCs, since NTCs/NMCs only prevent "the involuntary relocation of a Player, whether by Trade, Loan or Waiver claim" - and the League's action would be none of those.

Thanks kdb and I think people want a new thread :P

As I said just when you think it's going to go one way or the other you just get more of the same mess....

I doubt there's an extension. Bettman needs to get this figured out, and if they can't settle it by this time next month it will be way too late to do anything but play in Phoenix another year. I don't think Bettman will want to be left holding the bag.

Glendale would probably love it though.

Funny that Hocking and Friends believe that each fan attending a Coyotes game will by thousands of dollars worth of food and merch at Westgate before and after every game, but gamblers at a casino won't ever buy anything across the street.

To the north "across the street" is in the City of Peoria. To the east is a high school.

BTW... this isn't just a casino.... it's a casino-resort. Including it's own restaurants and shops.

And just when you thought this was going to end.....

Lisa Halverstadt ‏@LisaHalverstadt
#Glendale spokeswoman: “We are working with the #NHL to extend the current contract for another 30 days.†#Coyotes

Lisa Halverstadt ‏@LisaHalverstadt
The #Glendale spokeswoman says the league and the city are still working out details. #Coyotes

The CoG is looking to extend the 30 day extention for another 30 days. July 26 2012 ( gotta put the year because you just never know ) And the wheels on the bus .......

You missed the first tweet of the three on this matter:

Lisa Halverstadt ‏@LisaHalverstadt
Last month, the #NHL agreed to extend its agreement with #Glendale to operate the city-owned arena where the #Coyotes play.

.@danybrisson #Glendale resident Ken Jones, who is gathering signatures vs. #Coyotes deal, says his group has collected "several hundred."

Several hundred can mean anywhere from 200 to 900. Who knows how successful they have been so far.

*EDIT* RR, I would take that with a grain of salt. Lisa Halverstadt is definitely "ProCoyotes" we all know that. I HIGHLY doubt that the NHL would want this fiasco to continue for another season, besides where is the CoG supposed to get an additional $25M? They are already short $5 and have a budget shortfall of $31M.

I call dibs on the cop shop!

Context. I know it's hard to believe but some people aren't regular visitors here :sarcasm:, and may not be aware of last month's action.

IOW, Since they already extended it once, it is more possible (or less, I suppose) that they extend again.

I think miss Halverstad has been quite neutral compared to others. She has been quite the ressource on the Coyotes case. Well since Québec is the front runner for the Coyotes. I was not following as much when Winnipeg was the top contender.

My speculation is that the NHL is content to run the franchise in Glendale for another year, fully expecting the $17 million in AMF to come to them if Jamison doesn't come through. Glendale city council has already determined that the $17 million is as good or better than not having the team, even if the team leaves subsequently. From the NHL's perspective, perhaps they are expecting a lockout to reduce operating costs, so the $17 million might be equivalent to the $25 million for a full season.

I am wondering whether the idea of a QC relocation has run into some heavy weather, either on the ownership / price front, or the NHL's concern about the arena situation in the near term.
