Phillies are 2nd in starters WAR in the entire league.

They may need to add an arm if and when someone goes down because there's not much depth in the upper minors but cross that bridge when you get to it. They will have to add bullpen arms but that is every playoff chasing team really.
Where you rank the phils starters compared to the teams in a playoff spot right now?

Behind the Yankees?

Who has a better 1-2 punch than Wheeler-Nola right now? In a playoff series you are using 4 starters and you feel pretty good if those guys are getting ~half the innings.

The only guy not pulling his weight right now is Ranger and that is mostly due to uncharacteristic control issues. You can't expect last year's results, but given his track record, you have to give him the benefit of the doubt. Even if he doesn't figure it out, he's your #5 that moves to the bullpen in the playoffs.

So in your opinion they have the #2 ranked starters after the yankees.

Are we playing gotcha here? The Yankees are the only staff I would say has definitely been better than the Phillies. The Phillies are in the discussion after that.

What are your thoughts?

I guess the point is 'right now'. By season's end the Mets 1-2 punch could be Scherzer-deGrom and neither is pitching right now and the Mets are still like #6 in SP WAR. OTOH, as you pointed out Ranger is basically 5th worst regular starter statistically right now and Phillies are still #2 in SP WAR. That's pretty amazing.

If everything goes perfect with their rehab, sure the Mets, but between Scherzer's age and workload and deGrom's injury history, I wouldn't want to have a bet riding on it.

So Mark Appel is apparently pitching REALLY WELL as a reliever in AAA.

18G, 27.0 IP, 1.67 ERA, 5 saves. His fastball is in the mid to upper 90s. He's 31, he didn't pitch at all from like 25 to 29 including a multi-year retirement after a shoulder surgery.

He's not on the 40-man so would need a move if he was to get a shot with the Phillies.
