Islanders should sign him. I think he’d be a fit there as the PPQB. He’d also be surrounded by a ton of character guys that’ll surely keep him in check. Most importantly, he’ll be insulated in a really good defensive environment with the defense they have there. They need someone with a bit more offense though and I think Tony fits that role.

This.

But what made Fletcher the worst wasn't just his horrible asset management: it was the delusion underpinning it. Everyone on the planet who followed that team for the past ~5 years knew it was headed to the bottom. Fletcher not only didn't realize that, but he actually thought it was close to legitimate contention and kept adding more (terrible) players that he thought would take them to the next level. Which they did, in the wrong direction.

All that to say most people would have done a better job than Fletcher were they living in reality or, in the very least, advised by someone who was.

That’s the main thing in a nutshell. He kept adding players to compete but somehow kept making the team worse. Lunatic.

good hypothetical, but how? Someone else getting paid can figure that out I guess

Seems to me he simply belongs in Carolina.
It's the perfect fit
His cost is very low compered to a guy like EK65 but he has to be in an environment like Carolina or NYI where his issues can be contained.

He might have to sign with a crappy team to prove that he is worth it at the deadline perhaps or maybe he just gets squeezed out of the league.

Fletcher (and a couple other GMs from the past) is why, when fans get asked "do you think you could do a better job of being a GM" they will respond "yeah, yeah I do."

Keep in mind, a large number of them would still manage to do worse.
99% of the time I would agree with you. But in the case of Fletcher... I think I could go on an off season long whiskey bender for breakfast, lunch, and dinner while somehow through the blackout haze do a better job as a GM than Fletcher.

As a Pens fan I wish the Flyers would have signed him to a 30 year deal.

Isn't that Dobson's spot though? I mean, I guess you could put DeAngelo on the 2nd unit or run 2 D, especially since it'll be a dirt cheap deal.

More so that lacking in defence, who is lacking a Powerplay Specialist? I'm not sure i see a lot of teams out there in that condition.

DeAngelo's reputation, character questions, absence of a defensive game will limit the suitors who would even consider it. He's probably got his own list of limited destinations he'd even consider going to. So...small market.
Idk the guy has put up really good amount of points on two teams that had good d squads at the time. And then 30 points in 70 games with the flyers is probably pro rated to like ppg on a functional team lol

It's just is the headache worth what he gets , he will probably sign another low contract then get his 4 mill extention after being good for a year and then we will be back here in three years.

I think he’s a good dman for what he does. Torts is an idiot so I would clump past issues with this so closely. Adding him for 1 mill a year to an already good team would be a good move imo.

He was incredibly bad defensively in Philly. Maybe somewhere else he would try harder.

It just doesn't necessarily scale like that.

DeAngelo is one of those players who is at his best, if a team isn't really good enough. He can produce offense if he's given those prime opportunities to do so. But good teams have better players for those roles.

I agree, If you put him on a top 5 NHL team, he won't succeed.

That team wasn't good enough. But moreover...he played 67% of his minutes at even strength that year, having his ass carried by Slavin. If Tony DeAngelo is being lugged around by your stud defenceman like that, you're not a good enough team.

Now, they have Burns to fill those minutes and he's much better at it. They're a better team for it.

That's a ridiculous statement. The had the 3rd best record in the NHL.

Results say differently. 3rd best record in the NHL.

2021-22: Carolina 116 points
2022-23: Carolina 113 points

Look, I'm not a big Tony fan, nor would I want to pay him much or have him play that much on the top pairing, but your comment about Carolina not being good enough is silly.

You want to say he was covered by Slavin? Yep, I agree. You want to say he needs a strong defensive partner and PP time to excel? Yep, I'll buy that too, but your statement about only does well on teams not good enough is patently false given his success on a very good Carolina team.

And what did that team win? Besides...the "3rd best record"?

DeAngelo is not a good defenceman. If he's playing top minutes, you team isn't going to win anything other than maybe a bronze medal for the regular season.
