No to Guentzel. Yes to Reinhart. Just as far as spending money. I realize not an apples to apples comparison

Maybe, just maybe - Toronto goes out again and they work something for Marner. He seems to catch the brunt of media/fan flack out of the expensive guys up there.

But yeah between those two Reinhart does more for his/'the' club than Guentzel. Bringing back Jake [for more money] is literally running the same shit back which would be on-brand and hilariously misjudged. Idk what about these past few years has made this front office believe they can keep carbon-copying their roster, system, and coaching staff and somehow get success out of it? Like, what smidgen of evidence do they have? A random game against a team like Colorado or something?

We would be getting absolutely dummied by any single team in the playoffs right now and the only thing that would come from it is maybe a few more playoff points for Sid. It would be embarrassing.

Zero desire to bring Jake back and continue the same old bullshit. I don't even think Jake would want to come back so there's that too.

Problem is, I think Reinhart has even less of a reason to come here for a huge contract.

Ersson was their starter prior to Carter Hart facing his trial.

Columbus could easily rocket to a playoff team given their young talent. Fantilli and that young Russian line are great. Vincent was arguably the worst coach in the league last year.
Cbj has no goaltending. If they fix that then maybe

Reinhart is also a bit of a powerplay merchant so not sure how he does well here given our abominable pp.

Reinhart is a shiny new toy! and coming off of a 57 goal season, he'll command way too much money.

Jake is likely much cheaper, only 1 year older than Reinhart, and has been Crosby's best winger ever. Proven! Bring him back, leave GCR alone, and focus on figuring out the rest of the team IMO.

If you want to clear out cap space (Smith/Rakell/Graves/Jarry) and get both of them, then you've just upgraded our top 6, and can still sort out the bottom 6.

That's a good thing, imo. This team needs specialists; snipers, net-front guys, PP specialists, etc. People always bring up stuff like "power play merchant" as if it's a bad thing, or the points count any less. I'd kill for a power play merchant on this dogshit team.

What’d ya mean? You mean you dont just keep passing the puck around the perimeter on the PP? I would never have guessed…
Yea its quite a shocker.

All year I thought o pass the puck back in forth. Then I see these playoff teams just shoot the puck.

What's really insane to me is some power plays have players moving to different parts of the ice. Sometimes even between the penalty killers.

Idk it's really weird to witness.

I'm sure part of it comes down to the personality/playing style of the player but it is hard to look at Smith on the ice and Bunting on the ice and conclude they care the same amount.

I'm sure part of that in Bunting's case was him coming here with something to prove whereas Smith had just won a cup and didn't seem hungry for another.

I don't expect Smith to charge into the corners like DOC or Bunting but man there were so many games where he lost a lot of battles he should have won, and he didn't bring nearly enough offensively to make up for that.

I would say much of the same applies to Rakell. I actually think Rakell cares but he's gotta show it on the ice more than he did. Too passive a player.
I feel Rakell would benefit from a change in coaching or style. He plays much different than he did when he first got to Pittsburgh.

Doesn't passing around the perimeter count towards possession numbers?
I mean...possession is what's important, not goals!

Several signs point to this [analytics running the show] being true.

When ZAR was here as the darling - he frequently just shot the puck at the goalies chest or chipped the puck in (in fact that might be the only things he did). Ruhwedel...same thing. There wasn't a puck he touched that did not immediately get shot on net. Almost incredible he couldn't score occasionally with how often he shot.

Blind front office to anything that isn't analytics. Or maybe it's the coaching staff who knows. Both seem to be out to lunch for a few years now.

I feel Rakell would benefit from a change in coaching or style. He plays much different than he did when he first got to Pittsburgh.

Rakell would fit well on teams like New Jersey, Florida, or LA.

I don't mean to imply it's a bad thing, but rather that this coaching staff/team would be quite adept at neutralizing Reinhart's greatest asset

On a side note I saw discussion about trading Petts.

Then saw the thoughts of a 2nd and B prospect is all he would get.

I'd rather just keep him and sign him to a 7 year deal and trade him much later. Top 4 defensemen are tough to come by.

Yeah it's a no brainer to keep Pettersson and re-sign him. His kind of defensemen tend to get undervalued by other GMs and his value is likely going to be stagnant for the next 5+ years.

Tanev just went for a 2nd and a B prospect as a rental at age 34. Trading Pettersson in 5 years when he's a 32 year old rental likely brings back the same, and I think it's unlikely he brings back much better right now.

Marner to the Pens would be absolutely bizarre. I'm not saying it's out of the realm of possibility - the Karlsson trade seemed like a crazy idea until it wasn't - but it just seems the type of move that doesn't happen. I think a lot of other teams that would be interested could easily outbid Pittsburgh.

Marner would supplant Rust as Sullivan's dream winger.

But even if the Pens had the assets to acquire Marner, I highly doubt Toronto would do a deal with Dubas. Even if Treliving and Dubas have a solid working relationship, Shanahan would veto any trade talks out of spite.

Smith moved. No to Marner. To much money and Pens issues are grit size and depth. Like the Bunting add, Good contracts vs the 10 to 11 million that still leaves massive holes. Stephenson, gives the Pens some needed size, grit and scoring as well. Rakell played with a brace on his right shoulder this year. Maybe come back healthy and be that all around RW he showed the year before.
Stephenson Sid Rust
Bunting Geno Rakell
DOC Eller ?
Poulin Ponomarev Acciari

Marner would literally be our 2nd best player. It’s not happening, but it’s insane to say no to someone like that because he’s not big enough or whatever. He would be our best special teams player by far and improve our scoring by a huge chunk. Not to mention he’s actually good defensively and a threat at all strengths.
