Rumour going around that teams can have 2 buyouts. Somehow i feel the pens get shafted because i dont even think we will buy out 1 player. But, what the heck. Hockey is back so i cant be too mad about it :P

Hoping for:

Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Bennett-Malkin-Neal
Cooke-Sutter-Kennedy
Glass-Vitale-Jeffrey

Hopefully there are Jeffrey and Bennett over Adams and Tangradi, but I doubt about it.

Bortuzzo should be a 6th D-man probably over Despres/Lovejoy/Strait etc.

Plenty of flexibility for this season, particularly to add players with expiring contracts.

The tricky business, obviously, will be 2013-14. Might have caught a slight break that the owners finally moved off of their $60 million number for the ceiling. It will instead be $64.3 million, the same as the 2011-12 season. The Pens have 14 players signed with about $12 million left to fill out the roster. Thankfully any new deals for Malkin and Letang wouldn't kick in until the year after, when hopefully things will be back on the upswing and there will be more room to re-sign them.

Also to consider: teams are allowed to use up to two "compliance" buyouts prior to the start of the 2013-14 season. The more options Shero and Botterill have at their disposal, the better.

With that out of the way, though... it's almost time to drop the puck on this season.

Rob Rossi ‏@RobRossi_Trib
Malkin: "Very excited' to soon be on a plane to #Pittsburgh, practice with @penguins teammates. #NHLdeal

Josh Yohe ‏@JoshYohe_Trib
Pascal Dupuis: "We need a week as a team to be ready. That's all. And we will be ready."

Rob Rossi ‏@RobRossi_Trib
A few days before Malkin, Gonchar back in North America: They are in Bratislava right now, headed back to Moscow to get stuff. #NHLdeal

Man, time to get excited all over again.

Sutter moving in to reinvent the 3rd line. No more J. Staal (Sadface.) Vokoun in, on a shortened season, to light that fire back under Flowers ass. I really think this is a great move on Shero's part.

Oh. And a season, even if it is shortened in length, full of a healthy Pens team.

Hopefully Tangradi can push his way further up the lineup and we can find a way to add a top6/RH shot for the PP winger for Crosby's line.

Otherwise we should be good.... if the demented D/PK/Goalie-showing of the Philly series is behind us.

with training camp being very short does that mean that less AHL guys are going to g.et invited to it?

I'd buy out Lovejoy (if that's possible) and go with this lineup for the first few weeks.

Kunitz - Malkin - Neal
Tangradi/Bennett - Crosby - Dupuis
Cooke - Sutter - Kennedy
Glass - Vitale - Jeffrey/Adams

Orpik - Letang
Martin - Niskanen
Strait/Bortuzzo - Engelland
Bortuzzo/Strait

then decide what to do going forward. Do you think there is any chance that someone decent becomes available after being bought out?

I would think that most of the guys who will be bought out this quickly would be the truly colossal failures -- Hi, Wade Redden -- but we haven't heard all the details on how the buyouts will work.

Teams have until the start of next season to exercise the buyouts, so one imagines most GMs would wait to see what they have first. I doubt it will be like after the last lockout where teams had to immediately slash salary to open the season and start signing free agents.

Have to say that there's been fantastic cap management if you look at the team next year being under the cap by $12m.

I really hate the idea of buy outs. Why reward teams like the Rangers for making mistakes? I guess the Islanders finally part ways with Yashin.

As the Pens move ahead I really hope they use cap space to stack up their top 6 F's and top 4 D. Sure its nice to be well rounded but there's enough quality coming through the pipeline to have some holes.

I am really excited to watch hockey again, that being said I think the team is significantly weaker than the one that got throttled by Philly last year.

Ray Shero has done a fantastic job positioning the Penguins for the new cap realities.

I've seen a few people mention being impressed with Phil Samuelsson's play in WBS this year. He's looked good to me, too. Does anyone think he has a real future with the NHL team?

I said in the WBS thread a few games ago that i might need to start consider him a prospect again as i had written him off tbh.

Hes good defensively and really good on the PK. We do however have a huge logjam on defense. But in a few years i dont see why he couldnt be in the NHL.

Is Bennett ready to make the jump? Would be a shame if we call him up early.

I think it's probably a bit early for him. Let him have a full season in the AHL then bring him up next season. Obviously, if there's injuries then he'd be brought up.

If Geno takes an identical deal to Sid with the 8 year max, his cap hit will be 10.8 million.

Just like I was saying for the longest time that Sid would take 8.7, I will take bets that Geno will not ask for a higher cap-hit than Sid, and will thus get 8 years, or less years if for some reason he prefers that, at 8.7 per.
