Following last night's game in St. Louis, fans learned that long-time Blues' favorite Pavol Demitra had been traded to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Daniel Alfredsson. Unfortunately for Demitra, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim were once again on hand to spoil the winger's recent legacy in St. Louis.

When last the two teams met, the Ducks handled the much-favored Blues surprisingly well in the 2003-04 Western Conference Finals. Last night, the Ducks' success against the Blues continued, as Sean Burke stopped 16 of 17 shots en route to a 2-1 win at the Savvis Center.

Given the fact that last night's matchup featured two rival powerhouses, it was surprising to see that there were less than 18,000 in attendance at the Savvis Center, which boasts a 21,000-seat capacity. Are fans still sore over the lockout? Perhaps. Or perhaps hockey has simply been overtaken by the World Series of Poker in terms of national importance.

The Ducks next matchup tonight is against the San Jose Sharks, whose lineup features Peter Forsberg, Scott Niedermayer, and, of course, Pavol Demitra.

"It's always tough when you only give up 16 shots and lose", stated Blues coach Marc Crawford. "But they are a tough team to play against and you have to grind out every shift. I give them full credit"

The rather inauspicious conclusion to Demitra's career in St. Louis, saw him finish with nary a shot on net against the Ducks. The appearance was all the more difficult for Demitra given rumours began to circulate before the game of a trade, yet Demitra was cleared to play just the same.

As to the surprising lack of fans at the game, it was rather puzzling considering the Blues were on a four game winning streak, had sold-out the home-opener against the Oilers and were facing a conference rival in Anaheim, the same team that upset the Blues in the Western Conference playoffs in 2004.

"How did the fans know it was going to be so slow?", chirped Blues agitator Matthew Barnaby.

The two teams combined for a total of 33 shots on net, hardly a statement game for the new HFNHL.

The Blues face the Rangers this evening at home, before having a night off in anticipation of Demitra's return to St. Louis in a Sharks uniform.

Daniel Alfredsson will be in the line-up this evening for St. Louis.
