Prospect Info: Patrice Cormier

Okay, I know he's not really a prospect any more, but I also know he hasn't really stuck as an NHL regular. With a past that included being a fairly high draft pick and being a solid leader in junior, as well as a reputation that had him referred to as kind of a "loose cannon" type player, I expected him to a pretty decent agitator by now. Perhaps the fans of his team can enlighten me on his progress as well as his recent play. Is he going to be a regular, night in night out NHL'er at any point? What value does he hold to your team? And the money question, would he be available for trade, and if so, what is the asking price.

I am not sure where he will land next year.

He will be waiver eligible and the Jets don't really have much room for him as Chevy already has eleventy billion 4th liners and that is without dipping into next year's waiver wire.

Does he have the potential to move up from the 4th line? If the Jets didn't already have other 4th liners, could he be an NHL regular? Or is he the kind of guy who is more suited to an AHL/Europe team. I ask, because on paper, he seems to be the kind of guy my team (the Oilers) needs, but I'm not sure why he hasn't stuck as an every day NHL'er. I expected him to end up as a good bottom six grinding leader who had some toughness and a bit of skill. If he was that, he'd likely be playing more.

He has no offensive talent at the NHL level. He plays a defensive shut down game and wins faceoffs. He's not amazing at that either, as he's been pushed off the team by guys like Peluso, Santorelli, Tangradi, and Wright. I don't think he'll ever be an NHL regular with us, or any team for that matter.

Good to know. Unfortunate though, as I thought he would make it when he was in junior.

It's been hard to get a real gauge on Cormier, mainly because he has barely seen the ice in the last two seasons. 19 games with Winnipeg, not a single one of them with over 10:00 TOI. Was on the opening day roster last season and seemed to be pencilled in as the 13th forward, but his spot was taken by Brett MacLean.

I still believe his ceiling is as a good 4C and passable 3C, but he's pretty rough around the edges at the moment. Not a great skater, not very good with the puck, doesn't consistently get it out of his end, and his physical play is inconsistent. Historically he has been extremely good on the draw, so that could possibly become his niche role in the NHL, as a defensive FO specialist.

Like truck said, he's up against it with the glut of depth forwards this team has. At 577,500 (per CapGeek) he'll probably be qualified, but I don't see him cracking the lineup next year. Career-wise, could really see it breaking either way. Wouldn't surprise me if he became an NHL regular somewhere else, though I could also see him stuck as a career AHLer.

It's sad really. Never liked him since I saw how much of an idoit he was at the Jr. level but REALLY REALLY hoped he'd pan out to at least a 4th line Center just because he was part of the Kovalchuk trade....but honestly, I'd rather Slater or some other proven 4th liner to be in that position, there are plenty of guys who win faceoffs, and clearly thats not enough to get you a starting role.

:(

I doubt we trade him...we'll probably just let him either sign an AHL only deal or he'll get picked up from someone else and I'll forget about him instantly.

He'll be qualified this off-season, and come to camp for one more try.
He'll be waiver elgible for the first time so he may get picked up then and stick on that team *if he doesn't make ours*.

I'll disagree with some here in only to say that I don't think the last chapter on Cormier has been written yet. He hasn't had a lot of time on the Jets, but was decent two seasons ago (2011-2012) on the Ice Caps, although he dealt with an injury this past season.

I think there is still a chance he becomes a 4th line C or W. Like garret says, I think he gets another shot at camp next year and if there isn't a spot for him I would think Chevy works the phones to try to turn Cormier into a player from another team in a similar situation.

I've come to terms that he won't be Jim Slater-lite, but play the role guys like Gagnon, Stapleton, Machacek, etc. have played for us.
