UFAs:

- Sign Hall 11m x 7y
- Re-sign Haula 4m x 2y
- Re-sign Pysyk 1.5m x 2y
- Let Dadonov and Hoffman walk

snip
What makes you think Haula and Pysyk would go for such short term deals? Is it to wait for the cap to rise again and try to cash in at 30/31 instead?

I think they'll just take the best offer with max term that they can get. There should be plenty of teams needing a 2C interested in Haula especially.

Zadorov could likely fetch 2nd + 3rd without the financial headaches. It’s basically asking to pay Million$ to move from a 3rd to 2nd pick? This would be insanity and unless FL includes a 1st, AVs are better keeping and exposing Zadorov.
I agree.

The two parts of the trade in isolation would be:
  • Strålman + 1st as capdump
  • Zadorov for 2nd + 3rd.
Combined you have:
  • Strålman + 1st + 2nd + 3rd for Zadorov.
That might be a bit steep in combination given that a 1st involved, so maybe the 2nd becomes another 3rd instead:
  • Strålman + 1st + 3rd + 3rd for Zadorov.
Alternatively you say that the capdump is worth a 2nd and go with:
  • Strålman + 2nd + 2nd + 3rd for Zadorov.
I don't think any permutation involving a 1st makes sense for Florida so they're probably better off just riding out the last two years with Strålman. Even though he's declining rapidly the difference between him and Zadorov isn't significant enough to make it worth losing a bunch of good picks.

Yes, it will be easy to find a taker for a free 30+ point, Cup winning, middle pair D who can play both sides and has one year left at 5.5m.
And your assessment of Yandle is wrong. He is a 2/3D who can be lazy on defense.

The days of trading 5m players and getting back value with $0 cash coming back are over gang. Welcome to the new NHL. They can hold Ski, wait until trade deadline, retain and then get picks. But trade 5.5m salary and get anything of value. That time has passed.

I want you to be Arizona fan for 2 minutes. They will miss the playoffs and faded badly. Their gm while paying players are paying good players and have the least amount of talent with the amount of cap space. Dubas might overspend but at least they have superstars. Arizona has um Keller? They have not one Batman on the roster. Hall is gone in 20. Soderberg is gone in 20. They have 4 ufa's on d in 2021. Their future is bottom 5 in the NHL. Arizona has to hope they lose a 2 and 3 pick and not a 2021 1 over their dumb draft scouting measurements. Their greatest asset is not until 2021 when they have cap space and can rebuild the team afresh. And you want to waste 6.5 million of it.

And you think one solution is to add a 33 year old d-man whose D is brutal. Yes he can carry the puck. Yes he is excellent on pp1. But his defense just sux. That isn't laziness. That is old age kicking in. He cannot play top 4 minutes against the Boston's, TB, Tor, etc. in division without getting more exposed than a Porky's movie marathon. The 6.5m cap space needs to be saved in 2021 to bring in 27-30 year old players and rebuild. Arizona needs reconstructive surgery and not band aids. Post virus Florida have to include the picks/young players/retain salary to dump Yandle and not the other way around(unless u r taking 5m+ salary back). On a stanley cup team he is a 5 at best.

Absolutely no chance Arizona does that. I love Yandle. But I’m not taking his contact unless you take Kessel’s.
Would Florida be one of the teams on Kessel's trade-to list? I guess they have good golf so that's a plus. Kessel would be an ok replacement for Hoffman/Dadonov (at least on paper).

I would guess Florida would be one of his top choices, honestly. They’ve got a good, old school coach, a bunch of talent up front, low expectations, zero pressure market, no state tax, warm weather, golf and Indian gaming casinos. If I had to guess, I would think Arizona and Florida are his top two choices.

Understandable, but it would only be two years (contract expires summer 2022). And I feel like he'd be a likely candidate for Seattle in 2021. And depending on what you guys do with the odd man out of Compher/Jost/Kadri/Donskoi, I think he'd be the most likely candidate from Colorado.

Either way, counter offer? And what do you think he'd get from FLA contract wise?
If you want a counter-offer, how about Zadorov + Jost for Weegar + 2nd?

With Ekblad/Stralman/Priskie on the right it makes sense to use Mackenzie to acquire a more natural fit at LHD. Zadorov would give Florida a big physical presence on their blueline which they otherwise lack.

Jost would be a young and cost-effective replacement for Haula (who probably leaves in UFA), and showed after the deadline this year that he can do well as a 2C with PP time (3g, 4a in 9 games). Going forward it's unlikely that he keeps getting such opportunities on a deep Colorado team though.

Zadorov and Jost are each probably worth about a 2nd +3rd (2 2nds + 2 3rds total), so it seems fair that Avs get a 2nd back to balance the value. Overall that makes Weegar worth about a 2nd + 2 3rds which seems reasonable.

For Colorado, they would get a steady RHD who can play on the 2nd or 3rd pairing with Girard or Byram. Adding him would make Timmins expendable to be used in a trade for a top 6 forward (eg. Timmins + 1st for Rakell). For reference here's a capfriendly roster for Colorado based on these moves.

Matheson is better than Zadorov at everything and likely cheaper and Yandle is a huge part of that PP.
Matheson makes $4,875,000. I would be shocked if Zadorov got more than that. His next contract will probably not be over $4m.

Zadorov is consistently among the NHL leaders in hits, so there's at least one thing Matheson isn't better than him at.

As for Yandle, he may be a big part of the PP now, but he offers very little else as he is incapable of playing top 4 defense. I'm sure Florida could find a much cheaper D man to man the point on the PP without Yandle on the roster. For example Shattenkirk is an UFA and also happens to already live in Florida.

Weegar isn’t going anywhere. Moving him to gain anyone other than a top pairing guy is a step backwards.
Matheson needs to go first and foremost, Stralman next just because of his salary and our need of a meaner shutdown guy.

Imo Yandle isn’t going anywhere. He’s an elite puck mover, is on top 5-10 in scoring for a d-man, and is fine when paired with the right guy.

Haula had a great year with VGK but his last year and a half has been mostly decline and injury. I don't see a team offering him more than 3 years.
He has the opportunity here to play as a 2C and work his value back up. Depends if he wants more money on a lesser team or take a slight discount to be on a possible playoff team.

As for Pysyk, he was good to great his first year in FLA but then declined as well and was used as a bottom 6 forward this year and actually did well. He's a bottom pairing defenseman and doubt he would have more than 4 teams interested in him.

As for any deals of Weegar to COL, no thanks. Weegar is arguably our 2nd best defensive defenseman behind Ekblad. Short sample size but with him, Ekblad and a budding Stillman, we just need to move Yandle (BOS, MON, LA are some hopefuls) or Matheson and continue to shape the defense. Zadorov getting a raise and term will block some of the young LD we have coming in soon and FLA fans like what they see from Stillman who may end up being better than Zadorov by next year.

Yandle put up more EV points than Girard this year will playing less minutes and comparable zone starts.

Not really sure Yandle is a problem at all and is probably becoming one of the most underrated players in the league.

Zadorov QO is 3.2 right? So a million dollar saved for a worse player.

Points is a weird thing to use when comparing Girard and Yandle. Girard is Colorado’s top defensive defenseman and plays the number one minutes on the team. The 40+ point pace he’s on is certainly a bonus but the reason Sam Girard is Colorado’s minute leading player is because of his defensive ability. He and Yandle are total opposite hockey players.

Sammy Girard is a shutdown defenseman. For some reason people see his height and confuse him with one dimensional offensive D.

Point being Yandle is more than a one trick pony on the PP.

And if anything Zadorov is the player
that is one dimensional out of any discussed here.

Zadorov is a huge and very mobile Dman who's great at defending in transition and doling out big hits. Nothing about him is one dimensional.

Is he paid to be something else? He’s not an “easily replaceable” player that offers “nothing else” because he’s only a triggerman as the poster pointed out.

Yandle drives offensive play from the blueline better than any Av not named Makar.
He’s the 20th highest paid defenseman in the league. I’d hope he’d be able to do more if he were on my team that’s for sure.

One thing to keep in mind about the Panthers this offseason - Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reported the owner had asked them to cut salary for next year. They spent a boatload last summer between Quennville, Bobrovsky, Stralman, Connolly. Didn't exactly see the results they were hoping for.

Very possibly they let guys walk - Dadonov, Hoffman, Haula - and look to replace them internally with guys like Tippett, Denisenko, etc.

I would also expect them to do all they can to move Matheson. But either way, I think it's more likely they cut salary as opposed to add it.

Definitely agree that it’s getting to the point where Yandle is underrated. He’s been quietly, consistently putting up numbers. The guy almost has 600 career points now and was on pace to hit 50+ for the 3rd straight season.

Zadorov is definitely one dimensional.

He brings nothing to the offence. And he moves well for a guy his size, but I wouldn’t call him ‘very mobile’.
