Well, so far we've found nobody but Ovechkin who did it for ten straight seasons. I wasn't aware of this, so thanks for pointing it out.
The margin of 'win' on his team, in goals, in each of ten seasons:
52 -- 23
46 -- 38
65 -- 26
56 -- 34
50 -- 40
32 -- 28
38 -- 21
32 -- 19
51 -- 25
53 -- 21
I mean, that's pretty ridiculous! (Also makes me wonder where the Caps would have been for ten years without him...) He actually tied with Backstrom for the overall team scoring lead in 2014, but he still destroyed all teammates in goals.
So, there are players who can beat Ovie in consecutive team scoring leads (Gretzky and Hawerchuk are mentioned so far), but has anyone led his team in goals for ten years? Great question. I can't think of anyone.
This leads to another question: What's the biggest margin of 'victory' among teammates for a seasonal goal-scoring lead? Ovechkin's 39 goal 'win' on the 2008 Capitals must be the most in the Bettman era, isn't it?
I don't think there are too many guys who've led their teams by as many as 30 goals. As for all-time, a few obvious names come up:
- Bossy led the Isles by 32 goals over Kallur in 1981
- Gretzky led the Oilers by 42 goals over Messier in 1982
- Gretzky led the Oilers by 33 goals over Anderson in 1984
- Mario led the Penguins by 30 goals over Quinn in 1988
- Mario led the Penguins by 36 goals over Brown in 1989
- Selanne led the Jets by 48 goals over Tkachuk in 1993
Those are (not surprisingly) the only guys I can find so far who led a team in goal-scoring by 30 goals or more. And the only ones who 'beat' Ovechkin's 2008 team goal dominance are Gretzky in 1982 and Selanne's unbelievable 48 goal-lead in 1993. There may be more. Anyway, pretty impressive stuff for Ovie.
