My question, though, is why was he so hot on the Flyers? They are big market but not the most glamorous, they don't hold a longstanding winning tradition, etc.

I personally went with "he likes orange".

But I think it's actually that he Flyers courted him a lot and they seems to be buddies with SKA management (going by the latest news) which might have swayed Michkov's camp as well.
