Lovely bit of unintended humour about the Canucks, in an otherwise pretty illuminating article on the Las Vegas expansion (aka how the owners will create another sun belt team and pocket $$$ [16 million? each], which they don't have to share with the players).

Disaster looming in the form of a difficult decision. We can only hope it'll be difficult

"And on and on it goes. Loui Eriksson looks like a good fit for the Vancouver Canucks, but his no-movement clause could force the club to make a difficult decision to protect only one of Jannik Hansen, Anton Rodin, Emerson Etem or Markus Granlund next June."

Out of that group, Rodin has the most potential.

The rest of the players are bottom 6/9 players, but Rodin has top 6 potential written all over him.

Trade Hansen this summer for the draft picks that Benning will inevitably burn through by next June, protect Rodin if he plays well, fire the rest out of a cannon for all I care. Easy peasy lemon squeezie.

Tough choices there. :sarcasm:

My hope is that Hansen is traded, Rodin is protected, and Etem and Granlund are exposed. But lots can change from now until then. I think we are going to see a fair number of trades from teams looking to sort out their expansion draft situations.

Trade Hansen for a decent pick at the deadline, go with the kids for the rest of the year. Who cares about Etem or Grandlund, Vegas can have em'.

I don't see that as much of an issue. Every team is going to potentially lose an "OK" player or two. Hansen we can hopefully move for a pick at the deadline. As for the other three, pending a BIG year from them in 16/17 I don't see it being a huge loss if one of them gets taken by LV.

Lets pump the brakes on Rodin until we've seen him play... He very well could flop and be a Fabian Brunnstrom

I think the real question is how do we satisfy the goaltender requirements? Miller is ineligible, so can we offer up an RFA?

Of course, Rodin could also be not even NHL material, period. Which we will find out this year. At his age and experience, and the type of player he is...if he's not at least showing strong signs of NHL Top-6 ability this season, he'll be worth approximately jack squat.

Really though, any of these players Etem/Granlund/Gaunce...if a bottom-6 filler is the worst thing we lose, we're laughing. There are teams that are going to lose actually useful young players. Look at Minnesota if you want to see what an ugly Expansion situation looks like. Barring some serious maneuvering, they're going to be losing an actual good young Top-4 Defenceman...not some borderline waiver fodder fringe forward. :D

Obviously out of those 4 its really only between Rodin and Hansen.

Gauge it off how this season goes, if Rodin is a complete bust then descision is easy protect Hansen. If Rodin puts up good numbers shows he can be a contributor then move Hansen to a contender at the deadline.

Moving Hansen at the deadline would be the easiest as a team trading for him wouldnt not be all that concerned with trying to protect him or said team could flip him at the draft.

Oh no we have to protect Eriksson over the extreme other talents of Etem or Granlund.

Sedin x 2, Eriksson, Hansen, Horvat, Baertschi, Rodin

Tanev, Edler, Gudbranson

Markstrom

Done.

We're fortunate that expansion is happening while we are terrible. The 2008-2012 teams would have been pillaged.

Yeah.

And also, it's assuming we need to protect Sutter, which ... meh.

Swap out Sutter with Rodin then, no one is going to take Rodin unless he has a really solid season in which case the choice is easy.

Expansion draft is probably the only thing that were in a good position about over 90% of the league.

The only thing that sucks is that Las Vegas is guaranteed to bump us back in the draft and I guarantee will get the last "big talent" before the "drop" that happens immediately in front of us, just like 2014 and 2016.

Yeah that is going to hurt. Maybe we set a draft lottery record and get bumped back FOUR spots this time. Depending when the 32nd team expansion draft is though that one could really hurt if we have some more players eligible and worth protecting.

Either the NHL did not find a way to screw us or Benning was able to out....errr...smart them? We have no protection issue at this point but I'm sure Benning will find a way to create a problem.

This was the stupid part about not rebuilding two years ago. We will have two truly awful teams to worry about competing with for picks as well as the inevitable down-cycles for the Rangers, Detroit, San Jose, Boston and others.

Of course, if we'd started "rebuilding" in the complete teardown and stuff the roster full of teenagers sort of model many seemed to want two years ago...we'd be in a rough situation with a whole bunch of 3rd year Pro players to protect come expansion draft time. :dunno:

This would probably be my list too. Depending on how Rodin does. Might swap him out with Gaunce or Etem.
