Sensational Summer Prospect Happenings

The three main prospect happenings this summer for the Ottawa Senators were:

The Robin Lehner Trade: I like Robin Lehner but Ottawa just could not keep three NHL goalies. The return for Robin was good for the depressed goalie market – a first round pick in 2015.
The 2015 NHL Draft: The Ottawa Senators drafted three of my personal favourites so, needless to say, I thought the Senators did particularly well. My three favourites were:
Colin White: 1st round at 20th – If you like Dylan Larkin or Curtis Lazar, you will love this guy.
Gabriel Gagne: 2nd round at 36th – Huge guy (6’5) with huge potential and an excellent finishing touch.
Christian Jaros: 5th round at 139th – For me, the best defenseman out of Slovakia in the draft. His critics accuse him of having slow feet. While this may be true, I don’t think they are nearly as bad as some of his critics suggest.
The Matt O’Connor Signing: The Matt O’Connor signing may not make much of a difference this year but I suspect it might a few years down the road. This is what Matt told NHL.com after the signing, “I’m a big goalie and I always need to get quicker moving laterally. I think my game really improves working with a good strength coach as well, but (Senators goalie coach) Rick Wamsley will work me hard. He’s a good, hard-nosed guy that’s going to develop my game as a goalie in many aspects like playing the puck, positioning and playing a bit more of an aggressive style.â€
"

In addition to Top 10 highlights the obvious U21 lads already on the roster, plus 5 honourable mentions along with the rest of the 2015 draft class.

As well, "E-Mac's Impact Prospects" are noted along with how the Sens stack up with the rest of the league with respect to their prospect pool.

Colin White is not flashy but will be one of the greatest assets a coach can hope for. Teams win championships with him for a reason. Quiet leader who does whatever it takes for a team to win. For him shutting down an opposing team is just as important as putting points on the board. The kid assesses what needs to be done and somehow gets it done. Can be offensive and defensive. Very smart player.

You identified some things you liked from the draft, which did not include Chabot, and then Chabot is on the top of your list. Seems to be a disconnect.

White being one of his favorite player in the draft doesn't mean anything about who's

the best prospect in the Sens pool. Even if the writer likes White, Chabot still has the

highest ceiling of our propects right now because of the assets he has, especially

skating. White is a hard working player, good on both sides of the ice and most

definitely a ''safer'' prospect than Chabot but it's unclear what kind of production he

could bring in the offense department. Chabot has improved tremendiously over the

last year and his assets and hard work suggest he could still improve. I think the

difference lies in the ceiling of both players. Chabot could be a top pairing Dman, while I

highly doubt White will become a top line player (Altough the definition of top line player

has changed quite a bit lately). On the other side, In worst case scenario White would

easily be a shutdown 3rd liner while Chabot could end up being only a PP specialist.

Very interesting thanks

You and E-Mac don't seem to underrate the Sens prospect pool. Emac had it ranked 12th, while you had it at 15th. But your 3 other colleagues had it 26th, 27th and 28th... I can see where you're coming from with "The Sens prospect pool may very well be underrated in our rankings"

I haven't studied other teams prospect pools enough the last 2 years (too busy) to really have an educated opinion, but usually a prospect pool of the Sens actual quality (despite many key losses to graduation or trade) is more around 10-15th, like E-mac and you were saying.

Just the fact that your colleagues have the Habs prospect pool (only other NHL pool I know enough) above the Sens one tells me enough ;)

Anyway, your top-10 is excellent, I agree with those potential impact players in almost that order. Only one I'm still very doubtful is Englund at 9th... I would have had Lindberg at that spot, but I think we'll have a better idea soon. In the end, I see about 10 future NHLers in the actual pool with 3 to 4 being high quality. Very underrated pool, but that's mainly because Sens don't pick very high... The picks obtained in the 2015 draft with the O'Connor signing gave a huge boost to a timid group but IMO it will jump through the rankings until next summers. Stats and achievements will not give much choice to people making those rankings.

Once again I agree completely with this & was going to write here that I too would have replaced Englund with Lindberg who I am very high on. I am not very high on Englund at all based on what I have seen from him at the Development camps over the past two yrs. I think Harpur is a much better prospect or even Jaros who was very impressive at this yr's development camp but who knows, I've been wrong many times, just ask my wife.
