OT: Visiting from Dallas

Hello,

Looking for a few tips for an upcoming trip to Montreal. My wife and I are visiting from Dallas, and plan to catch the March 8th game.

We are arriving Sunday the 6th, and would like to find a fun little place to catch the Stars vs. Sens that afternoon. Can anyone suggest a spot around downtown? We are staying a few blocks from the Bell Center. A sports bar is fine, but if there are any unique places worth checking out, that will definitely show the game, even better.

Also, we are planning on having a dinner at Moishes one night., as I heard it is a wonderful steakhouse. I've also heard Schwartz's deli is a must try for lunch. Any other suggestions for good places to eat? Poutine is certainly on this list as well, so any pointers as to the best in the city would be great.

Any other cool places to check out will be nice as well. The Notre Dame Bascialla is on the list, as is Old Montreal, and the underground mall. But I figure I would come to the experts for some tips. So any help is definitely appreciated!

Thanks again everyone!

To watch an afternoon game i'd go to the station des sports :

2051, rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest, Montréal, QC H3H 1M6 (514) 931-5559
862, rue Sainte-Catherine Est, Montréal, QC H2L 2E3 (514) 903-8571
(last one is closer to the bell center)

Food is not incredible but the game will be aired.

Perfect! May just grab something small to eat while the game is on, then go grab a meal elsewhere, so this is excellent. Thanks!

Added bonus: Station des Sports is located about three blocks east from the Old Forum, the home of the Habs for decades and where more Cups were won than perhaps anywhere else. The building has been converted to a multiplex cinema, but they've kept the exterior and have a lot of hockey motifs inside and out.

As you approach the entrance on Ste Catherine you'll notice Habs references on the sidewalk outside. Walk inside and you'll see hockey pictures on the wall, a row of original Forum seats near the theatre ticket booths, with markings of where centre-ice was. A quick, free tour through hockey history.

you could get a smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz and wait 30 minutes in line, or you can J walk across the street and go to The Main and have your meat instantly, and have it better tasting as well as having a more complete food menu. **** Schwartz, it's just a tourist attraction.

2051 St Catherine West the first one is closer. Not the second one.

2051 is a way way closer it's not even questionable way closer

Sorry just wanted to be sure he has the right info

Love Boustan. They've opened several locations now (Laval, RDP, West Island). Best deal in town -- the schwarma pita, ask for them to put the potatoes inside the pita. It's almost the same quantity as their dish, which is double the price. Pita sets you back only $5.00. Spices and meat quality create amazing flavors. Tastes like real chicken, lol.

Bagels, I'd recommend Fairmount (not that far from downtown, maybe what, 15-20 minute car ride, esp. if you go late at night and don't get caught driving from St-Lawrence where all the clubs are). Open 24 hours, you can't go wrong. They have lox and cream cheese on the premises, for those visiting from out of town. Several specialty bagels worth a try, including blueberry and also available in a variety of grains. Enjoy.

When I go to Schwartz, I just order a take-out, meat only 1-2 lbs, nothing else. I've been going there for years and found that it's the best way to enjoy it. If you choose to sit in the restaurant, you're overpaying for a lot of sides that don't add that much to the experience. The smoked meat alone tastes fantastic. Bring back to your hotel if you're visiting and just have it there. Avoid lineups.

Gotta try the Main, so many here have recommended it.

If you're looking for an amazing fish plate downtown Montreal you must try porcini crusted roasted black cod in port reduction at Fereira Cafe (google it). There is no better fish dish in the world that I've tried.

Typically, I drag my out of town friends that visit to the restaurant, but not one has ever said anything negative about the meal.

If you like Mexican food there is this great place called Tacos and Tortas it's on Rachel St, everything on their menu is amazing.

Authentic and reasonably priced drinks (Mojitos).

As for greasy eats if you like poutine Banquise is where it's at.
