I think the goal was to find a competent person to act as GM for these trades. That takes Nill out of the equation.

While drafting and signing contracts may be a mixed bag, trades are one of the things Nill seems to be good at. I think the main reason we see him do nothing at the deadline is that he doesn't want to make a bad trade just to do something, and bad trades are all that's available.

He did it once when he traded Kevin and a second rounder for Kris Russell because he felt like he needed to do something anyway when Hamhuis was not available.
