Jonas Gustavsson did not travel to Washington for Friday’s preseason finale. Jeremy Smith dressed as Tuukka Rask’s backup. It’s possible the Bruins have decided on Smith to be the full-time No. 2 goalie.

The Bruins invited Gustavsson to camp to push Smith and provide some experience. Smith has never played in an NHL game. The 30-year-old Gustavsson has appeared in 148 NHL games for Toronto and Detroit.

Max Talbot also did not travel to Washington. Talbot is competing for a fourth-line spot and penalty killing duty. Rookie Joonas Kemppainen, however, might have pushed Talbot out of the picture.

The 27-year-old Kemppainen has been a consistent and trusted fourth-liner during camp. The Bruins initially believed Kemppainen and the organization would be best served with AHL games to adjust to North American play. But Kemppainen has quickly gained coach Claude Julien’s trust in five-on-five play, on the penalty kill, and on faceoffs.

Roster decisions coming

The Bruins have 27 players remaining in camp, including Gustavsson, Dennis Seidenberg, and Seth Griffith. Final rosters must be set by 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Seidenberg and Griffith are expected to start the season on injured reserve. The Bruins can carry a maximum of 23 players.

The B’s efforts to play faster, attacking hockey is fine, but not if it’s at the expense of the sound team defense for which the team used to be renowned.

Still, as the Bruins wrapped up a 4-3-1 preseason, they were optimistic about returning to the playoffs, if not to the elite level.

“I’m confident,†center Patrice Bergeron said. “I like the way we battled and competed all the way through the camp and in the games. That’s what we need to be all about: working hard and being competitive and being on the puck. And then the chemistry is going to have to take care of itself. I think the camp has gone well. It’s been a while since we had a camp like this, where we had so many jobs open and spots that kind of were question marks. I think it’s healthy. It’s been a healthy competition. I feel it’s always good to have that, to have pressure to push yourself to be better.

“It was unfortunate that we lost Seids (defenseman Dennis Seidenberg) for a period of time (to back surgery), but that did allow other guys to step up and force that competition — which we can carry over into the season.â€

Conroy: 6 predictions for Bruins season

http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/...015/10/conroy_6_predictions_for_bruins_season

After a five-month layoff since the last time we saw a meaningful NHL game in Boston, the puck will be dropped on a new Bruins season Thursday night at the Garden.

What happens after that is anyone’s guess.

This is clearly a Bruins team in transition. Just two years removed from a President’s Trophy, the B’s project to be a bubble team for a playoff berth. After half a decade of knowing what to expect, uncertainty abounds.

It would be foolhardy for anyone to make predictions for this team. But have no fear. The Herald is here to do that for you.

And so, without further ado, here are a half dozen things you can expect to happen by the All-Star break in late January:

The fact that Bergeron has only played in 1 all-star game is amazing.

I think the new breakout system is going to cause some problems for the vets use to Claude's D reverse breakout. I noticed a few times mcquaid looking for the reverse with no one there. Should work well with Krug C Miller and Morrow. I think the rest will struggle at first with it though.

At least it's something to keep an eye on as the season opens.

2 more cuts required to set roster.

http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/...ns_notebook_gustavsson_wins_backup_goalie_job

The B’s current roster is at 25 and they’ll need to get down to 23 by tomorrow at 5 p.m. Smith is on a two-way deal, but he would have to clear waivers to be sent down to Providence. Unless the B’s have a deal in place for Smith, or unless they decide to go with three goalies in Boston, the B’s would have to put Smith on waivers at noon on Monday if they wanted to use his roster spot to get down to 23 by Tuesday’s deadline.

Though the 6-foot-1, 195-pound Randell may have surprised some people on the outside, Julien said that the rugged right winger did not catch the B’s brass off-guard.

Whether he fits in Boston remains to be seen. One thing to note is that Finnish rookie Joonas Kemppainen, who has been impressive in camp as well, does not require waivers to be sent to Providence. If the B’s need a roster spot, it wouldn’t hurt Kemppainen to get a few more games of North American experience while the B’s take a look at a dash-and-crash line of Chris Kelly centering wingers Zac Rinaldo and Randell, with veteran Max Talbot being worked in as the opponent dictates.

We’ll soon find out what management has in mind.

According to Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports and Bob McKenzie of TSN, the Bruins placed forward Max Talbot and goaltender Jeremy Smith on waivers on Monday. If Talbot and Smith go unclaimed over the next 24 hours, they can be assigned to Providence.

While the writing was on the wall for Smith when the Bruins signed Jonas Gustavsson to be their backup goalie on Sunday, waiving Talbot comes as something of a surprise. The Bruins got the Avalanche to retain salary on Talbot when they traded for him last season, meaning the veteran fourth-liner only costs $900,000 against the cap. Still, the emergence of potential fourth-liners Joonas Kemppainen and Tyler Randell in training camp likely made Talbot expendable in the eyes of new general manager Don Sweeney.

Dig this Randell kid. Dig the refresh, dig the maintenance of the Bruin style while adapting somewhat to the new age NHL, dig a lot about this team.

wait I thought CJ hates the kids and there is no chance a kid would take a job from a vet?

once again an incorrect assumption.

Somewhere there is a Claude hater curled up in the fetal position because what he desperately wanted to happen negates all he knows to be true. :D

in fairness these are not really CJ moves.

yet he still gets the blame when a kid doesn't make it on the team? so he is to blame if it doesn't happen but its not him when it does happen?

not saying you believe that but it is a common belief around here.
