Looks like only in Russia the name is strictly male. The rest of the world regards it as female since it ends in "a" which is feminine in Romance languages.

Its Greek derivation is "Victory". Pretty fitting for a kid of Geno.

It was a before Elton John was totally out (though everyone probably knew) and in the video it was a female Russian soldier he was singing too, but everyone back then was very aware of it being a male name, because of Kruschev. There was so much theorizing and speculating about what he was telling us. It was pretty grand by before the internet standards.
