Interesting that he'd take the contract termination. With the Devils having gone through ~2/3rds of their season and owed $4m this year, that's leaving around $1.3m on the table.

If he's willing to sign for the minimum I would think that plenty of playoff teams would be happy to sign him on for depth. For the price of free, plenty of teams would be willing to give a guy with his upside a shot.

He might have to go get a contract next season for more than league min.

Why did he suck this season?

Last season he had great success playing next to Blake Coleman, if you go look at some the highlights on YouTube, Blake could turn the puck over in the defensive zone, transition to offense, and Gusev could finish the plays. He never found that kind of synergy again after Blake left. This year he had some limited success playing with Mikhail Maltsev and Jesper Bratt, althouth Bratt plays great with everyone.

I hope someone gives him a chance, he's an extremely likeable player and I'll root for him wherever he goes.

Seems to me he lost all the motivation this year playing for a non contender

Don't think he is that kind of a guy. Earlier in his career he played for Yugra, very much non-contender and he showed up every game. Nikita is a very proud and passionate guy who can excel playing with elite finishers. He probably is fed up playing with mediocre checking lines. Having Covid earlier and Lindy Ruff who seemingly doesn't like Russians did not help. I hope he finds an NHL team with some talent (join Kaprizov in Minnesota?) or go home where he will be more respected.

I don’t see any NHL team signing him at this point, it’s likely back to KHL now

Couldn't keep with Ruff's style of play, was basically a turnover machine every game he played this season.

Still a chance to sign for a cheap contract on a contender. There are plenty of teams where he would look good, signing with NJ was a horrible idea to begin with. When you join a roster of over achievers (Calgary is another example) you will be playing a certain style of hockey which may not be suitable for you.

Speedy teams need not apply he's far too slow in his transition of offense. PP specialist on a bigger heavier playoff team, maybe.

Yep Ruff prefers to play rugged Americans like Sharangovich and Maltsev.
