Also:

From the 2009 Entry Draft

Rnd 4 #116 - NATHAN LIEUWEN - G
Drafted: # 167 By Buffalo Sabres 2 Years and -51

I took a chance on a slew of US high schoolers - all of whom will be NCAA players next year in the 4th and later and only Placek was drafted. Also Kuvaev (WHL) wasn't drafted - despite being in a couple top 100 lists. They must have listened to Cleland - you did tell me he was rubbish.

Drafted 40th by Boston -14

Rd 3 - 88th - C - William Karlsson

Rd 3 - 90th - D - Zakhar Arazmastev

Undrafted (another mild surprise, but not a major concern. Overager)

Rd 5 - 148 - C - Blake Coleman

Shane Prince
1st Round - 23rd Overall
Drafted: 2nd Round - 61st Overall by Ottawa Senators - (-38)

I knew when I took him that he wouldn't go in the 1st round in the NHL draft, but nearly escaping the 2nd round was not anticipated by me. There exists a real chance I either misdiagnosed his potential or the NHL has done the same. Concussion issues likely made him fall a bit further than expected.

Zack Phillips
2nd Round - 33rd Overall
Drafted: 1st Round - 28th Overall by Minnesota Wild - (+5)

This is actually a bit lower than I anticipated him being drafted in the NHL and was somewhat surprised he slid to me at 33rd. I had him going in the early 20's.

Magnus Hellberg
2nd Round - 53rd Overall
Drafted: 2nd Round - 38th Overall by Nashville Predators - (+15)

Surprising that he was the 1st goaltender selected and that he went as high as he did. I was expecting him to go 3rd round or later based on projections.

Markus Granlund
3rd Round - 82nd Overall
Drafted: 2nd Round - 45th Overall by Calgary Flames - (+37)

Big jump for this player, likely based on his brother's production and rise to relative stardom. I like him as a prospect, but this was an extreme jump for him.

Dominik Uher
7th Round - 198th Overall
Drafted: 5th Round - 144th Overall by Pittsburgh Penguins - (+54)

I can't take a lot of credit for this selection as my instructions for Brock were pretty pedestrian, but I can say I appreciate the fact that the order changed and I went from having an undrafted player into inheriting a 5th round selection and my biggest riser.

Also a bit of vindication for me on last year having drafted a ton of players that didn't get a sniff in the 2010 NHL Draft.

Josh Shalla - 4th Round - 110th Overall (2010)
Drafted: 4th Round - 94th Overall (2011) by Nashville Predators - (+16)

I was disappointed that a 47 goal season didn't get him ranked by the CSS in the Final Rankings, but it was good to see Nashville step up and take a chance on him.

Michael Sgarbossa - 5th Round - 122nd Overall (2010)
Signed: San Jose (2010)

I haven't had a chance to boast a bit about Sgarbossa being signed after the draft last season and really exploding onto the scene as a legit prospect this year. He was the only undrafted player to be invited to Team Canada's U20 evaluation camp this year. After a midseason trade to the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL, Sgarbossa scored 29 goals and 33 assists in 37 games (1.67 PPG) and 14 points in 8 playoff games. (1.75 PPG). Despite his chances being VERY remote to make Team Canada, I have a feeling he would have been selected higher than Shalla had he not been signed by San Jose directly after the draft last year.

Round 1 (5th overall) Sean Couturier, C
NHL: 8th overall to Philly (-3)
Notes: Glad to see he'll have good linemates hopefully.

Round 1 (10th overall) Mark Scheifele, C
NHL: 7th overall to Winnipeg (+3)
Notes: I thought he may go high like this. I would've taken him 7th too if that's where my 10th overall pick happened to be.

Round 1 (11th overall) Ryan Murphy, D
NHL: 12th overall to Carolina (-1)
Notes: Not encouraged by the slip, but glad he's on a team I watch all the time (Cam Ward factor)

Round 3 (77th overall) Mattias Backman, D
NHL: 146th overall to Detroit (-69)
Notes: Bad news is he slipped, good news is he slipped to the Red Wings organization.

Round 4 (100th overall) Daniel Pribyl, F
NHL: 168th overall to Montreal (-68)
Notes: 6'3" scored big in Czech Jr's. He can surprise.

Round 4 (104th overall) Matt McNeely, G
NHL: Undrafted
Notes: Damn. Well he'll go to MIN-DUL and hopefully do well.

Round 6 (160th overall) Zach Franko, F
NHL: Undrafted
Notes: Surprised. Oh well I'll take in some Rockets games this year at least to see him play.

Round 7 (190th overall) Lars Volden, G
NHL: 181st overall to Boston (+9)
Notes: He'll probably sit on my prospects list for a long, long time.

New York State
Round 4, 105th overall Klas Dahlbeck D
NHL: 79th by Chicago +26

If not Detroit, Chicago is a decent place to go for a Swede. I'll take a Hjalmarsson.

Round 4, 115th overall Keegan Lowe D
NHL: 73rd by Carolina +42

Bloodlines pick (I love making them) and I really like his toughness and willingness to fight. A couple of defensive defenseman that hopefully both make the NHL is better than a pair of gambles who bust.

Mike Morrison, 127th overall
NHL: No

I took the bait of his 57th ranking in Future Considerations. Maxwell (the #1 goalie) has been traded out of Kitchener, so the job is his next year.

Austin Wuthrick, 162nd overall
NHL: No

Not too surprised given his injury.

Adam Reid, 164th overall
NHL: No

Seemed like everyone on the U18 team went but him!

Joakim Ryan, 195th overall
NHL: No

Being only 5'10 probably played a role in this.

John McCarron, 203rd overall
NHL: No

I had a few guys who weren't on the Central Scouting rankings down here.

A little disappointing after the first two picks. Don't worry I'll make up for it during free agency.

Adam Larsson 2nd overall
REAL DRAFT:4th overall New Jersey Devils(-2)

After Ryan Adam was 2nd on my list so I am very pleased with my pick even though Adam was selected a bit lower in the real draft.

Victor Rask 32nd overall
REAL DRAFT:42nd overall Carolina Hurricans(-10)

Boom or bust prospect. I like Rask upsize, had him as my target for my 2nd rounder for a long time. Maybe I should have traded down and get something else while still getting Rask.

Logan Shaw 92nd overall
REAL DRAFT:76th overall Florida Panters(+16)

Nice pick up in the 4th round, selected 16 spots higher in the real draft. Only problem is that Florida picked him..

Victor Berglind 148th overall
REAL DRAFT:UNDRAFTED

Magnus Nygren 152nd overall
REAL DRAFT:113th overall Montreal Canadiens(+39)

Could have been drafted two years ago but had his breakout season this season. Won the Swedish Championship while scoring impressive 10 points in 14 playoff games. Should get alot of icetime for Färjestad this coming season and continue to produce points. Good on the powerplay

Henrik Tömmernäs 182nd overall
REAL DRAFT: 210TH overall Vancouver Canucks(-28)

Another overaged player who had his breakout this season. Also good in the offensive zone. Scored 20 points from the blueline and also made his debut for the swedish national team during the season.

For the Canucks:

JT Miller - 1st round, 21st overall
NHL: 15th overall (NYR) - +6

Stuart Percy - 2nd round, 48th overall
NHL: 25th overall (TOR) - +23

Gregory Hofmann - 2nd round, 49th overall
NHL: 103rd overall (CAR) - -54

Matt Nieto - 3rd round, 62nd overall
NHL: 47th overall (SJ) - +15

Jeremy Boyce-Rotevall - 3rd round, 81st overall
NHL: Undrafted

Johan Sundstrom - 4th round, 96th overall
NHL: 50th overall (NYI) - + 46

Steven Fogarty - 4th round, 106th overall
NHL: 72nd overall (NYR) - +34

Ryan Tesink - 4th round, 113th overall
NHL: 162nd overall (STL) - -49

Dillon Simpson - 5th round, 122nd overall
NHL: 92nd overall (EDM) - +30

Marcus Sorensen - 7th round, 207th overall
NHL: 106th overall (OTT, 2010) - +101

Overall: Everybody rises save three, mostly quite significantly. I'm not at all bothered by Hofmann dropping, because I believe in his skill and think if he comes over to North America he'll light it up. I'm not particularly bothered about Tesink dropping, because I knew there was a chance he could go anywhere, but I'm intrigued. The one that stings is Boyce-Rotevall, not because I was a believer but because I wasn't satisfied with the pick when I made it. None of my targets were available, and within a few minutes I wanted somebody else.

I like you for two reasons Josh. 1) This draft - which was awesome for the Caps. 2) You have Brian Dumoulin as your icon.

I am still not totally convinced I did well in this draft. That Prince pick bothers me now. But I suppose if you put the Prince pick at 33rd and the Phillips pick at 23rd, it makes a bit more sense. And Dumoulin is a personal favorite of mine. I know you like him too. And one day when Skinner inexplicably hits the block, we're going to throw hand over fist to get him. :D

For Columbus:

D Dougie Hamilton
HFNHL: 1/7
NHL: BOS 1/9 (-2)
Surprised to see him slip, probably no moreso than the Stanley Cup Champs were to find him available for them. Really is the final kick in the balls for the Kessel trade.

LW Konstantin Komarek
HFNHL: 5/137
NHL: Undrafted (~)
Not entirely surprised, but also wouldn't have been surprised to see him go shortly after my pick in our HFNHL draft. Still have a good feeling on him and expect to see him on next year's shopping list for a lot of teams.

C Destry Straight
HFNHL: 6/167
NHL: Undrafted (~)
Again, not surprised - good but not dominant in BCHL, considered a but soft and one-dimensional. Will see if he earns any decent icetime at BC next year to improve his draft prospects.

D Rob O'Gara
HFNHL: 7/197
NHL: BOS 5/151 (+46)
The guy I considered the most likely to slip through the draft is the one guy that gets picked up, and coincidentally it's by the same team that picked Hamilton, so I guess I have to hope that Boston's blueline future looks good.

In this most unpredictable of drafts (we thought last year was bad!), not surprised to see most team's coming in at around 50-60% Drafted/Undrafted. There's a reason I dumped most of my picks this year, although I think a number of our drafts will look better in a year or two as the NHL team's catch on to guys we drafted. I wonder how we've done versus the NHL historically?

Even with two undrafteds out of four picks made, the Jackets draft was a roaring success for me the moment Hamilton was still on the board at #7. Any of the other picks panning out will be gravy. I just realt, REALLY hope that Dougie turns out better than the last D I took 7th overall, who ironically enough was also drafted by Boston... Memo to Lars Jonsson: you suck!

I think we're doing pretty good in comparison to be honest. It shows in the fact that *usually* the high profile re-entry players are already taken in many cases. And you would probably be shocked at the innumerable amount of leagues that have GM's that are so ignorant of the draft process that they select players arbitrarily based upon flawed criterion. I consider our draft to be a guideline for what to expect on the real draft day on most years, especially regarding what player goes in what round. We rarely miss on players that are drafted in the Top 120 picks or first 4 rounds.

It shocks me to see so many undrafted marks beside our drafts this year knowing how thorough our GMs are in this league. I think many will be vindicated next season as the first year in the NCAA takes place and where the cream will start to rise for many of these high producing HS talents or in the case of the Europeans, more exposure at higher levels.

Rd 4 - 116 - D - Jesse Forsberg
Undrafted (this one stunned me. Guy is almost 2012 eligible, tons of upside - I thought!)

Ya, this one surprises me too. The guys who fall throughout the year like him are hard to predict. Scott Harrington went 54th, ahead of a guy like Ryan Sproul who you would have thought surpassed him and started doing laps.

On the other hand, Forsberg's a bit like Hubert Labrie, who went from potential first round pick to undrafted as well. Similar guys who are undersized and not that offensive, but do bring it every game and have the smarts and character to overachieve. Labrie has signed an ELC though with Dallas, and I expect Forsberg will eventually as well.

Pretty good draft for my HFNHL Rangers...

Had 10 draft choices and 7 of them were picked up in the NHL draft. Came into the draft without a 1st rounder, but managed to pick up a 1st round talent at #39 in the 2nd. The undrafteds were 2 of the players I picked up in round 5 and one of the guys in round 6.

2nd Round (39th overall): RW Tyler Biggs
NHL: 1st Round (22nd overall) to Toronto
Difference: +22

3rd Round (69th overall): D Tyler Wotherspoon
NHL: 2nd Round (57th overall) to Calgary
Difference: +12

3rd Round (75th overall): G Samu Perhonen
NHL: 3rd Round (62nd overall) to Edmonton
Difference: +13

4th Round (99th overall): LW Max Friberg
NHL: 5th Round (143rd overall) to Anaheim
Difference: -44

4th Round (118th overall): D Patrick Koudys
NHL: 5th Round (147th overall) to Washington
Difference: -29

5th Round (129th overall): D Andy Welinski
NHL: 3rd Round (83rd overall) to Anaheim
Difference: +46

5th Round (130th overall): C Sahir Gill
NHL: Undrafted

5th Round (146th overall): G Benjamin Conz
NHL: Undrafted

6th Round (159th overall): D Frankie Simonelli
NHL: Undrafted

6th Round (180th overall): D Nikita Nesterov
NHL: 5th Round (148th overall) to Tampa Bay
Difference: +32

If their development curve happens as I expect, Gill and Simonelli should be sought after by NHL teams as free agents a few years down the road. Thought an NHL team would roll the dice on Conz in one of the late rounds, but I guess not.

HFNHL Bruins land 3 of 5 in NHL

Boston (AP): The HFNHL Bruins went 3 for 5 in the NHL draft, with narrow misses coming in on two defensemen in the late rounds - Guillame Cloutiere ( Chicoutimi ) and Oleg Misyul ( Loko - Yaroslav ) - who went undrafted in this somewhat expected, spectacularely random draft year.

Here's how it all played out:

HFNHL BOS 2nd ( 35th overall ): Stefan Noesen. NHL OTT 21st overall
HFNHL CGY 2nd ( 52nd overall ): Daniel Cattenaci. NHL BUF 77th overall.
HFNHL BOS 4th (95th overall ): Phillipe Hudon. NHL DET 145th overall.
HFNHL BOS 6th (155th overall): Guilluame Cloutier. Undrafted.
HFNHL BOS 7th (185th overall ): Oleg Misyul. Undrafted.

So all in all the Bruins are pleased with their picks. GM Kruegs claimed over pints at the Rusty Bean, "It was what it was. We rolled them bones, and came out with half a skeleton and a barrel of ale. Thats pretty good in a draft year like this."

There you have it fans - half a skeleton and a barrel of ale.
