You know, with the first preseason game starting tomorrow, might as well start a new one for the new season. And what better way than to show some changes to PNC. First and foremost, I'm guessing NCSU got a little bent out of shape about all the banners the Canes were hanging....

Because the NCSU banners from the 1950s make so much more sense to hang up there...

Well, that sure does look like shit.

We’re back to having like 5 banners now? Great.

NGL, the more I think about this the more it annoys me.

There’s an absolute ton of space for additional banners, and the Canes are at the peak of being a really good team. They’ve had some spectacular seasons lately where the only thing to show for it was a division title. Those dominant seasons get relegated to the fine print on a black banner, like they were NIT appearances or something?

Going forward, the only way they raise a banner is for a conference championship or Cup win? Those are spaced out by what, 10-20 years for the average team? I mean right now we’re on a streak of what, 17 years without anything that would now qualify. And 98-99 was just a nothing season now. That just seems to really disregard the meaning of those seasons, treating them like a footnote.

On top of all that, the borderless black banner looks cheap.

"Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Carolina Hurricanes
Kotkaniemi's 43-point showing last season was a breakout in itself, but he’s just scratching the surface. Maybe the Hurricanes weren’t that crazy for offer-sheeting him?

The 23-year-old recorded 36 of those points in the final 51 games of the year (0.71 points per game), which would equate to a 58-point pace over the course of an 82-game season. From Dec. 20 until the end of the regular season, Kotkaniemi's 2.88 points per 60 minutes placed him in the 91st percentile of all skaters who played at least 200 minutes in that span, according to NaturalStatTrick.com.

Assuming he’s reunited with Andrei Svechnikov and Martin Necas on the second line, Kotkaniemi is going to get a healthy dose of even-strength ice time in the top six. That trio was dynamite last year, posting a 56.9% expected-goals-for percentage and a 61.9 Corsi-for percentage when playing together, according to MoneyPuck.com.

Don’t be surprised if Kotkaniemi also carves out a regular spot on the second power-play unit alongside Necas and Teuvo Teravainen."

Oh I'm sure the reactions to this on the general forum would be level headed and rational

This bothers me more than any other part of it. The flags are the canes are the flags. I wish they leaned into them more, plus it messes with the consistency. The other banners and retired numbers all have the flags.
And the kicker is, its not like they haven't done it before. Either the flag pattern from the old alternate or the typical red and black flag pattern, there's already the template out there....

Also, I kind of miss the original look of the banners, with the flag pattern at the top, and a giant Canes logo making up the entire bottom half of it.

I'm thinking it's less NCSU and more the franchise realizing division banners are nice but not what the ultimate goal is. In other words been there done that, it's time to give that 2006 Stanley Cup banner some company.

The thing is, division banners are nice. Everyone gets that the ultimate goal is the Cup, but there are other things that deserve to be celebrated and memorialized. If they don’t make a Cup run in the next 2-3 years it might be another 20. We just don’t add anything to the rafters for that long?

I just don’t see what this actually accomplishes other than minimizing significant portions of the team’s history.

100% agreed. The only reason we've seen teams consolidate the Division Champions banners down is in situations where there were just so many banners up there that they needed the space. There are teams with a hell of a lot more history than the Canes who hang one for each division title...

So yeah, this just reeks of NC State getting their panties in a knot because the Canes were starting to hang more and more in PNC while theirs have remained relatively stagnant. Which is funny when State has NIT banners up there as well as 2 banners for each of their National Championships.

The only place that I know, at least offhand, that consolidated down like we did for the division titles, is the Wells Fargo Center in Philly, which just got to the point where they needed to do something when they put in the bigger scoreboard. At that point, there wasn't much room to keep them all on their own banners, so they scaled it down going from this:

to this:

But even then, they still hung one banner per Division that they won. So for the Canes, there should be 3 Division banners, one for the Southeast, one for the Central, and now one for the Metro. Consolidating all those divisions into one doesn't feel right.

To me, this feels like it came from the Canes rather than NC State. It’s not like there were 15 Canes banners up there or something. They’ve only hung 3 since they won the Cup. There was no space issue or visual conflict.

I’d like to at least hear some sort of explanation from the team. “Making room for more Cup banners” makes no sense. All they did was minimize their visual history with no apparent upside.

We in here talking about banners. I mean, listen, we're talking about banners, not a game, not a game, not a game, we talking about banners. Not a game. Not, not … Not the game that the Canes go out there and die for and we watch every game like it's their last. Not the game, but we're talking about banners, man. I mean, how silly is that? … And we talking about banners. I know I supposed to care about banners. I know I'm supposed to lead by example... I know that... And I'm not.. I'm not shoving it aside, you know, like it don't mean anything. I know it's important, I do. I honestly do... But we're talking about banners man. What are we talking about? Banners? We're talking about banners, man. We're talking about banners. We're talking about banners. We ain't talking about the game. We're talking about banners, man. When you come to the arena, and you see the team play, you see them play don't you? You've seen them give everything they've got, right? But we're talking about banners right now. We talking about banners.

The divisonal banners are what we thought they were, all right? We hung them in the rafters. Who the hell takes the third divisional banner in the rafters like it's ****? We were gonna hang the third straight divisional banner, everybody hangs three straight divisional banners!

The divisional banners are what we thought they were, and we took them off the hook!

Only banners I care about are retired numbers and Stanley Cups. Everything else is just a participation trophy. I’m okay with the consolidation, plus I hate clutter. Would love to see NC State clean up their cluttery mess too.

Tho do agree the new consolidated banner looks like trash.
