USCHO's brackets for this week.
The move to #3 overall got us Cornell instead of RIT in the 1st round with a potential 2nd round matchup of either UW or CC.
I'd be ok with this bracket...there would be easier routes to the F4, but certainly harder ones as well.

Providence, R.I.

8. Quinnipiac
9. Minnesota
16. Bemidji State

Seems like that potential Regional bracket would put the Hawks in a "Don't Look Beyond Cornell" situation, which may be the tendency with the Tigers (and their psychological advantage) looming as a possible 2nd round opponent. The good news is: Once the pucks start rolling in the Regionals, there's hardly time to think.

This Week in CCHA Hockey: Back from injury for stretch run, Bemidji State captain Looft pushing teammates ‘to realize what’s at stake’

This Week in ECAC Hockey: Gearing up to defend its national championship, Quinnipiac ‘big on focusing on the controllables’

College Hockey News looks at the key matchups of this weekend for the DI men ...
Games of the Week

(15) Massachusetts vs. (17) New Hampshire

UMass and New Hampshire head into this weekend's series jockeying not only positioning in the Hockey East standings, but also for possibly the last at-large spot int he NCAA Tournament.

We know the cut line for the NCAA Tournament will be No. 14. UMass and UNH are both on the outside at the moment, but not by much. If either of these teams sweep this weekend they could be right back in the tournament picture.

In addition, the teams are also tied for fifth place in the Hockey East standings, which is the last first-round bye position.

Both teams are coming off emotional weekends, as well.

UNH swept rival Maine, and UMass was swept by Boston College. That game included the Minutemen blowing a lead on Sunday when the Eagles scored two power-play goals late.

“It was business as usual,” UMass coach Greg Carvel said about the week at practice. “We didn’t bring up anything about refereeing. We brought up how we did not play to the level we should have. We got outplayed for some stretches of the game. Our goaltending was excellent. The character of our team showed through that we could find our footing, come back from a 2-0 deficit, take a 3-2 lead, take a 4-3 lead. Then, some things are out of your control. That’s the message. If we don't win, it’s about us. It’s not about anything else.

“I’ve said that there hasn’t been a game during the second half of the season that I didn’t think that we could have or should have won."

UNH was our Team of the Week.

"We got back on track and played to our identity," said UNH coach Mike Souza.

A brawl with 11 seconds remaining in Friday's game between Arizona State and Alaska, led to eight game disqualifications and, more than likely, further suspensions.

After a relatively minor fracas with 16 seconds remaining led to 30 minutes in penalties, another brawl broke out just a few seconds later, with nearly everyone on the ice participating. In addition, Arizona State's Tucker Ness and Alaska's Dawson Bruneski left the penalty box to tangle in an all-out fight.

The game was stopped at that point, with Alaska leading 3-1.

Ness and Bruneski each received two game disqualifications, which carry an automatic two-game suspension. In addition, two other players from each team — Ethan Szmagaj and Ty Murchison for ASU, and Braden Birnie and Will Hilfiker for Alaska — also received DQs and get an automatic one-game suspension.

“Obviously the rough stuff at the end, you kinda wish it doesn’t go to that,” Alaska coach Erik Largen said to the Fairbanks Newsminer. “But obviously we’ve played this team so many times, and there’s so many tensions there, and that’s part of the game too.”

Since both are independent schools, each has an agreement with one of the established conferences to handle supplemental discipline. For Alaska, that's the CCHA. For ASU, it's the Big Ten. The conferences are currently reviewing what further punishment will be handed down.

The game was relatively calm, and tied 1-1, until late. With just under two minutes remaining, Alaska challenged a hit by ASU's Brandon Tabakin — who had just scored the tying goal — for hitting from behind. Alaska won the challenge and was given a five-minute major power play, and scored twice in 37 seconds.

That's when things got ugly.

In all for the game, 247 penalty minutes were handed out, 131 to Alaska and 116 to ASU.

The last time a college hockey game had that many penalty minutes was Jan. 24, 2004, in a game at Walter Brown Arena between Maine and Boston University. BU won that game, 1-0, but Maine defeated BU 1-0 in the Hockey East tournament and went to the national championship game, where it also famously lost, 1-0. In that game, most of the penalty minutes came from a fracas that happened at the final horn.

Alaska and Arizona State play again tonight at 7 p.m. local time.

Results below from Saturday's single-elimination 1st round games for the ECAC Women's 2024 post-season conference playoffs, with all 4 higher seeds victorious. Most noteworthy among them - if you ignore QU's 9-goal shutout domination - were the Brown University Bears, who recorded their first-ever home playoff victory in their first-ever DI playoff home game ... in overtime to break a 0-0 tie, no less. :hockey:

(#12) Harvard 0 - (#5) Quinnipiac 9 ... Bobcats will be hosted by #4 Cornell for a March 1-3 Quarterfinal matchup with a best-of-3 format.

(#11) Union 2 - (#6) Yale 5 ... Bulldogs now head to the Quarterfinals where they'll face #3 seed St. Lawrence in a best-of-3 series starting next Friday.

(#10) Dartmouth 1 - (#7) Princeton 5 ... Tigers advance to face their #2 seeded hosts Clarkson in a best-of-3 Quarterfinal series scheduled March 1-3.

(#9) Rensselaer 0 - (#8) Brown 1 (1OT) ... Bears move on to the Quarterfinals @ #1 seed Colgate for next weekend's best-of-3 series.

And in the New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) conference playoffs, the best-of-3 format Quarterfinals round results this weekend determined the single-game elimination Semifinals matchups for next Saturday March 2nd. See below summaries of the NEWHA 2024 QF proceedings.

• The St. Anselm College Hawks needed 3 home games to eliminate the Post University Eagles. Final scores were 2-1, 1-2 (Post U's first-ever NEWHA post-season victory - and the first time in 27 conference games the Eagles have defeated the Hawks - on the strength of a 62-saves performance by sophomore goaltender Hannah Saunders) and 6-1. The #2-seeded St.An Hawks will face Stonehill College (see immediately below) in one of the Semifinal games.

• The Stonehill College Skyhawks swept their visiting Quarterfinals opponents, the first-year NEWHA Assumption University Greyhounds, by scores of 3-2 and 3-1. The #3 Skyhawks will face St. Anselm next weekend.

• The Franklin Pierce University Ravens swept their Quarterfinal matchup over the Sacred Heart University Pioneers, with 3-1 and 2-0 victories on the Pios' home ice. The 5th seed FPU Ravens move on to face Long Island U (see below) in the second Semifinal game.

• The repeat NEWHA regular season champions Long Island University Sharks also took the minimum 2 games to knock the St. Michael's College Purple Knights out of the playoffs, by 3-2 and 3-0 scores. The #1 seed LIU will host the Franklin Pierce Ravens on March 2nd.

For the Hockey East women's fans out there (and all y'all should be), here are the 2024 HEA conference tournament pairings & game schedule. Post-season play at campus sites begins on Wednesday, February 28th, with two Opening Round play-in games, and ends with the March 9th championship game determining the Hockey East auto-bid recipient for the NCAA DI women's national championship tourney. Broadcast & streaming details are TBA, but I'm sure the mix will frustrate some of us who wish to follow all of the game play. :pullhair:

2024 HOCKEY EAST WOMEN'S TOURNAMENT PAIRINGS SET

UConn Claims First Regular Season Title; 22nd Tournament Begins Wednesday

Date:
Sunday, February 25, 2024

PDF Format - Tournament Central - Tournament Press Kit (PDF)

AMESBURY, Mass. - The Hockey East Association announced today the tournament seeding and pairings for the 2024 Hockey East Women’s Tournament. The postseason will once again feature all 10 programs competing in a single-elimination format with all games played on campus sites at the arena of the higher seed. Tickets are available via the host institution for each game and television information will be announced in the coming days.

The Opening Round of the league’s 22nd postseason begins February 28 with two games to determine the quarterfinal pairings on Saturday, March 2. #10 Holy Cross (7-23-3/4-20-3 HE) travels to #7 Boston University (14-17-2/12-14-1 HE) in search of the Crusaders first-ever postseason win since joining Hockey East in 2018-19. It marks the first postseason meeting of the two teams. Holy Cross was 2-1-0 against BU in the regular season.

#9 Merrimack (10-21-3/7-17-3 HE) will travel to #8 Maine (15-17-2/11-14-2 HE) for their first clash in the Hockey East Tournament. It is Maine’s first appearance in the Opening Round and earned home ice on the final day of the regular season, while Merrimack is a perfect 2-0 on the road in the Opening Round. The Warriors were 2-0-1 against the Black Bears this season.

Two quarterfinal match ups are already known, as #3 New Hampshire (17-15-2/14-11-2 HE) has earned the right to host a quarterfinal for the first time since 2013. A win on home ice would give the Wildcats their first semifinal appearance since 2020 as they seek their fifth Bertagna Trophy in program history and first since 2009. They host #6 Vermont (13-16-5/11-12-3 HE), which owns a 1-0 postseason record over UNH after a 2-1 overtime win in the 2023 quarterfinals. The Catamounts went 2-1-0 against UNH during the regular season.

#4 Boston College (14-13-7/13-9-5 HE) has earned a top-four seed in each tournament since 2010, the longest such streak in league history. The Eagles will host #5 Providence (13-16-5/12-10-5 HE) in a quarterfinal match up on Friday, March 1 at 6:00pm. Boston College owns an all-time postseason mark of 4-2 against Providence, last meeting in 2015, while the teams went 1-1-1 against each other this season.

#1 UConn (22-7-5/19-4-4 HE) claimed the top seed and first regular season crown in program history to earn home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs. The Huskies are seeking their first Bertagna Trophy as Hockey East Tournament champions and have advanced to the title game in three of the last six years. UConn will welcome the lowest remaining seed from the Opening Round. The other Wednesday winner will travel Matthews Arena to face off with #2 Northeastern (23-10-3/16-8-3 HE), which finished second in the Army ROTC Hockey East Standings. The Huskies will host at 7:30pm on Saturday, March 2 in a game that will air on NESN+.

The 2023 Hockey East Women’s Tournament Championship will be played Saturday, March 9 at 12:00pm. The game will be broadcast live nationally on ESPNU.

Couch: MSU hockey is playing Wisconsin for a Big Ten title. It's a big deal. Not big enough for TV.

The biggest series in Big Ten hockey this season — first-place Michigan State at second-place Wisconsin, playing for the conference championship on the final weekend of the regular season — won’t be on TV.

That seems beyond comprehension, especially considering the entire series between third-place Minnesota and fourth-place Michigan will, as will a Friday night game between the league’s two worst teams, Penn State and Ohio State. In other words, every Big Ten hockey team playing this weekend will be on Big Ten Network at least at some point, other than the series that decides everything. ...
