I think raising the draft age to 19 would be beneficial for all sorts of reasons, but it would help to mitigate the complaints/concerns for how to "fairly" handle a draft this summer.

You could either choose to not have a 2005 draft, and wait until 2006, or you could have a 2005 draft using the 2003/4 standings, but it wouldn't be as big a difference maker as it would otherwise be given that most players would be ineligible for it since they wouldn't be 19.

Draft age in the NHL isnt as much a big deal as it is in the NFL and NBA because players can be drafted, yet still retain their eligibillity to play in Juniors and the NCAA. To be drafted by the NFL or NBA, a player has to declare for the draft, thus losing their eligibility with the NCAA... so it's more all-in than the NHL.

Plus, it'd probably be a lot harder to regulate so many different junior leagues. The NFL and NBA have NCAA. The NHL have CHL, NCAA, and countless euro leagues to sort through (SEL, RSL, et al.)
