SCOUTING REPORTS
G Kirk McLean:
One of the top goaltenders available, this ATD fixture somehow found his way to the Minor League Draft. McLean will be counted on to log big minutes and deliver in the playoffs, two things he showed he is quite capable of doing for much of his career. Plays the classic, low maintenance stand-up style and covers the angles well. Probably the best puckmoving goalie available in the draft. Led the league in wins in 1992. A second-team all-star in 1992. Vezina finalist in 1989 and 1992. Was the Canucks MVP in the 1994 Cup run, making "The Save of the Century" off of Robert Reichel in Game 7 against Calgary, and stopping 50-some-odd shots in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final against the New York Rangers.
D Dave Manson:
Maybe the best combination of skill and toughness of any defenceman available in the draft. Saskatchewan-born defenceman stood six-foot-two and weighed over 200 pounds. Imposing physical presence. Tough. Mean. Mobile for his size and able to move the puck. Packed a bullet of a shot. Will be counted on to clear the front of the net, stick up for his teammates and use his shot from the point on the power play. Topped 50 points once and 40 points two other times.
D Rick Green:
Arguably the top defensive, stay-at-home defenceman in the draft. It's a role he excelled at. It's a role he thrived in for the 1986 Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens. It's a role that got him a spot on the NHL All-Star Team for Rendez-Vous 87. Big defenceman was superb at shutting down the opposition, blocking shots and clearing the front of the net. Played a clean game, not taking a lot of penalties, and not leaving his team short-handed. Put up points early in his career in Washington, but offence won't be in his job description with the Indians.
