The Flyers and Penguins both definitely care that they be in the same division, that was brought up the last few times they went through realignment. You also had Crosby passing through New York however many times.
They played the Pens 4 times this season, and their first meeting wasn't until december under the current "Rivalry" divisional setup. Would it really be that big a difference to play them one less time a season?

I have One Idea for a rearrangement.

Into Metro: TB and FL

Into Atlantic: Columbus, NYI.

We fix the ridiculousness that is having the two outlier Florida franchises in the NE division. If anything this will serve Bettman's obsession with US TV contracts more, because playing most Metro teams will draw a lot more attention than the Canadian ones. Meanwhile, having a NY team play Canadian teams has to boost viewship of the Isles a ton.

We get rid of Ohio.

Beef is a genius.

NHL is still a gate league and the Canadian snowbirds wintering in Florida put money into the coffers of the teams there. That's my best guess as to why you have Panthers and Lightning in the Atlantic.

Nope

The NHL shouldn't have a ridiculous division with teams that are 16,000 miles apart just so two non-playoff teams from PA play one extra game per season.

The only real solution is a 42 team league, play everyone home and away for an 82 game schedule. Crown a true regular season champ. Have a 16 team playoff, 1v16, 2v15, etc., geography be damned.

Rivalries seem fine in something like the Premier League only playing twice a season. Makes the rivalry games actually mean something.

They think it is. The Flyers weren't happy last year that the Penguins only came here once. They may not like when the opposing teams fans are louder, but they do like their money.

Delay of a game penalty on Bolts. Vasy to the rescue?
Edit: nevermind, panthers announcers are shit
