You don’t have to add Bahl. You have the newly added Smith on the left. It’s not ideal but I think it would work to open the season.

They don't have to add anyone, the min NHL roster can be 20 players (incl. goalies). The max is 23. It's pretty common to have less to avoid salary cap.

They can make it work with this contract, they basically maxed the cap and gave Wood all they had.

We need to add someone. We're not going to go into the season with only 6 D.

If we're going to go with 22 players, we'd go with 13 Forwards and 7D.

I mean you said we HAVE TO add someone, which we don't. According to to cap friendly math we are actually already under the cap with 13F and 7D (even without LTIR, buyouts, trades or waivers ):

How to make it work with the right guys playing is a whole another conversation. I've been critical of keeping Tatar, Johnsson and acquiring Haula when we have so many young guys needing to play. But Tatar and Johnsson might have negative value. Nemec should probably start in the AHL, and Bahl or Okhotyuk should take his place. McLeod could be gone. Zetterlund can be signed to a 2 way contract, but he really should be in the NHL instead of someone.

You'd think the only reason Wood got exactly the cap space we had left is that they aren't going to LTIR Bernier or dump any contracts.

Isn't it nice how, after all these years of "cheap owners" crap, we're suddenly debating how to get the whole roster under the cap?
Damn Kovalchuk recapture bullshit actually impacts us this year!
Next summer should be interesting. There are a handful of teams that will have over 40 million in cap space. We’re around 36. Plenty for long term contracts for Bratt, Mercer, Sharangovich, Blackwood (if he rebounds) and Haula if he wants to stay. We should still have room to be big game hunters once again as well.

There is interest in Wood, i believe he wont be a Devil at the end of the season. Unless his hip is so smashed he cant play at all.
As there should be. Players w his physical tools do not grow on trees. He improved each year until he was injured. Can skate. Score and fight when he has to. Lots of teams cover that type of player. Seems people always forgot he was like second on the team in goals two years ago I believe. If they get that that type of player back he will fetch more than NJ will pay him.

In all seriousness, I love Miles and I hope that he's healthy and as close to 100% as he can be. I think he can be an added element to our lineup that we were sorely missing last year.

Wood's game is completely reliant on his speed. Hopefully when he gets back he didn't lose a step. The few games he played last year, he looked a little sluggish.
Were you watching the same games we were?

He had the same blazing speed post-surgery that he's always had pre-surgery.

The issue was that he came back too soon and re-aggravated his still healing hip so he had to shut it down for the rest of the remaining season.

He should be 100% good to go by the time camp comes around so we'll see where we're at with him.

I missed it being reported he would be ready to go for camp. Was that solid or just speculation though?

Yeah I don't remember him being sluggish skating wise. Maybe his timing was off because he hadn't played all year but skating wasn't the issue.

Woody woodpecker needs a healthy year or his nhl career is coming to an end. If he’s healthy, he will be good. Knock on wood…

He brings weight and aggression too and also relative age to the younger group. He’s disruptive and physical but also very undisciplined (historically).

I don’t really understand the signing actually and consider him grossly overpaid. I was hoping we were done with him and didn’t miss him last year. Hope I am wrong.

Phew, I was worried that I was able to guess something that actually happened but with this turning out to be a 1 year deal the inscrutable mystery that is the NHL off-season remains unblemished.

I keep forgetting about legacy contracts that have that poison-pill final year. Wood’s QO was actually 3.5 million, so NJ gets him for less than his QO even though it’s much higher than his previous AAV.

I remember you questioning the wisdom of qualifying (or going to arbitration with) Wood rather than just letting him go UFA. It seems kind of hard to believe that anyone in this market would have offered him $3.2 million or a multi year deal.

Now we get the benefit of paying a guy that played 3 games last year 70% of what our best player makes.

I’m not convinced he’ll have a lot of value at the deadline, best case scenario I see is he shoots a high percentage and we get a grabner type package. Substantial, but not a 1st.

If he plays well enough to return a second rounder and a prospect that’s a relative win for NJ. It means they got something from him playing wise this year and the gamble to sign him paid off. That would be a great outcome in my view.

Wood is such a unique player that, even if he only plays well in the 15-20 games leading up to the trade deadline, I could see a team really talking themselves into how Wood solves multiple problem in 1 inexpensive contract and they get hot to have him.

More so the Schneider buyout, which came a year too early. He would've been off the books now if they had just waived him and sent him to the AHL for a year.

Regardless, the team should be fine with Bernier going onto LTIR and then a few UFA contracts coming off the books next season.

Unless something changes, seems like our opening night forwards are set if you include Zetterlund on the roster since he would have to clear waivers and would most likely get claimed. That puts us at 14 forwards, so no space for Holtz to make the team at the moment. I know they have another buyout window, but it would make no sense to add more dead cap space for next season. Let Holtz marinade some more in the AHL unless he really blows it up this preseason - he will likely be the first callup and injuries will hit soon enough.

The 6th/7th D spot will be interesting to watch - hopefully Smith is 7D and one of the young'ins grabs a roster spot this preseason.

No he wouldn't. They bought him out in 2020, he had 2 years left, so now the buyout covers 4 years. If they buy out his one remaining year in 2021, then his cap hit gets pushed on to 2021-22 and 2022-23.

That only works if he misses the whole season. Once he gets cleared medically they can no longer have him on LTIR. There's also some other downsides to LTIR that may or may not affect the Devils.
