They had Carolina's goalie and a deeper team, and it didn't make much difference. And scoring has been their biggest hurdle for some time.
That's the thing about goalies though, they aren't like other players where you can normally predict what you are going to get. Generally speaking, you can have a goalie be lights out for a couple years and then very mediocre after that. It's more rare that you see a goalie be consistent throughout a long career like other players. Perhaps that's just optics though and facts don't show it (meaning it's rare to have skaters have long consistent careers as well). I think the stat is that the average career length in the NHL is 4.5yrs, but that's pulled up by the top end. For 75% of the league, the average length is 2 years.

Maybe it's because there are 18 skaters on a team and generally you are seeing 1 goalie consistently, so the top guys in the league having long consistent careers is what people see vs. very few goalies like that.

I don't disagree. That just makes it difficult as a gameplan one can count on. Especially when goaltending hasn't really been sinking the team overall. If you hypothetically have a goalie who's robbing games left and right when they shouldn't be, of course that would move the needle. But that's not a roster decision Toronto can bank on. They could grab the best goaltender in the league and it wouldn't be a shocker if they disappointed, because that's the way it goes with that position.

Looks like Auston Matthews is leading the league in shutouts.

Helps his Selke case for sure.

It's amazing how fans and media call out Marner constantly. Marner is a a star, not a superstar.

Where is the Tin Man? When is he going to show up? Toronto's true superstar?

Compare his career playoff results and stats to his peers.... McDavid, Draisaitl, McKinnon, Kucherov. All 4 are great playoff performers with great numbers, and have won many playoff series.

Yet Leaf Nation bends over backwards to avoid criticizing the Tin Man. Always excuses; he's sick, he played well but didn't score, it's his linemates' fault, etc, etc. Dude needs to show up to more than 1 game in the series.

A rich man's Alexei Yashin.

There. I've done it. Incoming Matthews hat trick tonight.

Only high priced forward that shows up in the playoffs is Nylander. Everyone else is invisible year after year
