This is intended as a rough calculation only. But, based on this metric, Matthews just had the 10th greatest season in terms of ES goal production, going back to the end of WWII.

If we look at post-expansion only, drop Gordie Howe and Maurice Richard's four seasons. Replace those with Pavel Bure (2000), Steve Shutt (1977), Teemu Selanne (1998), and Alex Ovechkin (2008).

Last year and early this year there was some concern that the injuries might have prevented him from hitting the heights he was capable of. Good to see him have such a strong overall season. Still think he’s capable of a 75G 50A year if all goes right.

He adjusted his shot quite a bit this year, not putting as much torque on the wrist firing those toe drag through the skates shots anymore. If he can ever get that shot back without nuking his wrist he’ll be automatic on the rush again in addition to his set play shooting this year.

Love Matthews...but this just makes me so angry that they can't build a proper team around him. Wasting his prime like Sundin, Iginla, The Sedins, Price, Hellebuyck, McDavid, etc.
you guys have 4 ppg players its not like he's on some poverty team lol at what point is it on the players as much as on management when you have a team like Toronto's for the past several years

100%. People don’t enough focus on ES scoring. PP’s come and go and most of the game is played on ES.

Shout out to Stamkos too by the way. I also felt his 60 goal season (48 ES!) does not get enough respect. It’s always Ovechkins 65 but Stamkos season was just as impressive if not more in my opinion.
Honestly, Stamkos doesn't get enough respect these days period. I watched a highlight video yesterday showing all 100 of Kucherov's assists and, even if he's not as dynamic as he once was overall, Stamkos still has an absolutely disgusting one-time bomb from the slot.

40 goals this season for the seventh time in his career which is more 40 goal seasons than Jagr or Yzerman among others.

AM34 has won his 3rd Rocket in 4 seasons. No one has scored more goals than him since entering the NHL. Very impressive when you look at his stats, over fifty 5v5 goals this season. Only 2 empty net goals out of 69 goals this season. Truly a generational talent.

With the performance Kucherov and MacKinnon put on this season, we seen some amazing Hockey.

3rd best player after MacKinnon and Kucherov this season.

If the man can stay healthy he's poised for an exceptional career and some very interesting conversations when he's done.

Big ups to AM34.

10th?

Looks like he’s tied for 8th best by your calculation

Loving that we FINALLY have some sustained offence back in the NHL. It makes a world of difference when it comes to star power in the league.

Hypothetically Could you imagine him and McDavid on the same line?

He would challenge for 80 goals+

He could've done that without McDavid with a little more luck. In the last 3 games alone he had over 15 prime scoring chances that he normally buries a few of. Has the NHL record for posts hit this season (20) since it's been tracked.

Curious why you refer to it as 10th when he's actually tied for 8th and is the one who scored 51 actual goals at even strength?

I'm guessing scoring will remain relatively the same over the next few seasons. IMO there is a lack of truly elite starting goalies right now, 10-15 years ago there were a lot more. I definitely think he'll have a chance again soon. The same way guys are hitting 130-140 points again, 60 and 70 goal seasons don't seem to be a stretch anymore
Maybe so but you need a perfect storm to hit 70. It's a lot harder than most people think.

Even a minor injury like 4-5 games and you're pretty much done from hitting that mark.

Definately has potential to be a top 3 goal scorer and top 30ish player all time by when he retires if he keeps up his prime another 3-5 years

I think he could end up much higher than only top 30. Definitely could end up in the top 5 goal scorer category to even encroaching on the top 2 or 3 if he remains healthy.
