Best Leaf player ever?

Did Cherry dislike him?

From what i remember, he was like a remix beetwen Joe Thornton and Ryan Getzlaf when it comes to playing style.

Great player, yes... just too bad greed consumed him in the end and put a stain on things. Cherry never had anything bad to say about Sundin from what I remember, he wasn't a fan of the trade at the time Clark had 46 goals and was heart and soul of the franchise.

Only stained by those who didn't fully understand the situation.
Fletcher did a wonderful job turning the Captain into a villain.

He was tremendous. There really isn't a proxy to compare him to in terms of current players in the NHL. 6"5, 230, could skate and could play in all situations.

He was never fully appreciated by Leaf fans or media. Consistently had his leadership qualities questioned (mostly due to his nationality). Consistently criticized for being a star, but not a "superstar". He was consistently surrounded by underwhelming wingers until the organization brought in Roberts and Mogilny. He raised the games of countless players (an older Steve Thomas, Derek King, Jonas Hoglund, Mikeal Renberg, Darcy Tucker, Nik Antropov, among many others). Didn't have an appropriate supporting second line center until Joe Nieuwendyk (past his prime) was signed.

One of the best clutch players of his generation. A prototypical #1 center and captain.

Mats Sundin best Leaf since Dougie and Wendel.

Don't remember Cherry ever criticizing Mats for his play.

He is on Legends Row recognized and appreciated for his contribution he made while he was here.

No need to slander him as his departure which has been discussed in depth so this thread is only going to go down that path again.

Lets move on to cheering for Matthews to see if he can fill the big shoes of Sundin.
