He was tremendous. There really isn't a proxy to compare him to in terms of current players in the NHL. 6"5, 230, could skate and could play in all situations.
He was never fully appreciated by Leaf fans or media. Consistently had his leadership qualities questioned (mostly due to his nationality). Consistently criticized for being a star, but not a "superstar". He was consistently surrounded by underwhelming wingers until the organization brought in Roberts and Mogilny. He raised the games of countless players (an older Steve Thomas, Derek King, Jonas Hoglund, Mikeal Renberg, Darcy Tucker, Nik Antropov, among many others). Didn't have an appropriate supporting second line center until Joe Nieuwendyk (past his prime) was signed.
One of the best clutch players of his generation. A prototypical #1 center and captain.
