Jonas Hoglund is a fair bet. He had 29 in the dead puck era with Sundin and Thomas. Give him 66 and 99 in the 1980s, surely that turns into 50.

Höglund is probably a good choice, because while not an overall brilliant player or skater he had a pretty good & hard shot of the one timer type and could position himself pretty well to fire it.

Already happened

Blair BJ MacDonald scored 46 goals on a line with Gretzky and out of the league a year and a half later

What about Chris Kontos? Maybe he could have scored 50 with the Wayner.

Kontos' career high for goals between 1982 and 1990 was 8.

Then, on the power-play with Gretzky in '89, he scored 9 times in 8 playoff games.

Let's face it, a pylon could have scored 25 goals playing a season with prime Wayne or Mario...

Didnt Don Ashby do the same but in less games?

Late in the 1979-80 season Don was traded to Edmonton in exchange for veteran Bobby Schmautz. Ashby finished the season nicely, soring 10 goals and 9 assists in 18 games, seeing some time with 18 year old phenom Wayne Gretzky.

More galling to Leaf fans was the performance of a couple of ex-Leafs. Don Ashby, recently installed as Gretzky's LW, enjoyed a career night with three goals, three assists

Kontos exploded for 27 goals and 51 points in 66 games for the Lightning in '93

He was only 29, but that was his last NHL season

What about a 1989 Probert and Gallant on a line with Gretzky around 85/86? Not bad players, but not great scorers. Could they (or one of them) have potted 50+ each with Gretzky (and Coffey). I think it is possible. However it is hard to predict players goal totals with 66 or 99. Tikkanen had good offensive skills and his tops in goals with Gretzky was 34. Hitting 30 again the two years after 99 left. Anderson only hit 50 twice, and one was mainly on a line with Messier, and Anderson is in the HHOF for scoring goals. Messier has one 50 goal season, as Gretzky's LW. Never again does he get to 50. Close many times.

I think that far fewer players actually would get to 50 with Mario and Gretzky then one would guess at first. Unless Gretzky actually had the goal if making a guy score 50 goals rather then actually winning games, then he might make a lot of players get to 50, but that wouldn't happen.

If you really look at it, Kurri is the only real 50 goal guy from Edmonton from Gretzky's line except Anderson and Messier once each. If you look at it that way it shows how difficult it would be for a much less talented player.

Great post, but just to nitpick a bit -- neither Anderson nor Messier really played with Gretzky when they scored 50. In Messier's case (he was still a LW then), it was in 1981-82, and during that season Gretzky played the early part of the season with Jari Kurri and Brett Callighen, the middle parts with Dave Lumley and Dave Semenko (!), and the latter parts with Anderson and Kurri. (Yes, Gretzky was playing with Lumley and Semenko when he scored 9 goals in two games in December, 1981.)

Anderson played with Gretzky and Kurri a lot in spring 1982, and through 1982-83, but he didn't score 50 goals then. He scored 50+ in 1983-84 and 1985-86. You're correct that he was playing with Messier as center in 1985-86, but in 1983-84 he played somewhat with Messier as well, particularly at the end of the year.

Of course, saying all this is not to downplay Gretzky's influence on those players, or the fact that they had power-play time with him, etc.

RW Mike Gartner could score 50 goals on a line with Gretzky or Lemieux.

We're talking about a line with Gretzky AND Lemieux?

Geez, pretty much anyone who has made the NHL would probably be able to get 50 goals.

How many goals would this line score in a season? I'd say 4 goals a game probably wouldn't be far off the mark. That's 320 goals. Even if the 3rd guy only scores 15% of them, it's still 50. Lemieux probably scores 150.

I'll go out on a limb and say that even Gino Odjick might have been able to do it. Career enforcer, with a career-best of 16 goals in 76 games. I once saw him on a penalty shot or a breakaway and he deked out the goalie really badly with a forehand-backhand move.

Had he been tasked with "Protect the two best players in the world, try to stay out of the box, and try to score as much as you can" from the coach, he might have actually been able to do it.

I'm thinking a guy like Chris Nilan would have a legitimate shot at this. A career high of 21 goals in 77 games in the mid 80's. With the proper coaching and encouragement to join in on the attack (which he seems to have had for a few years in Montreal) I think it's doable.
