I propose a gamble Leafs Nation. If it works, we have a team that competes hard for 60 minutes and if it makes it to the playoffs, also makes a coach worthy of the Jack Adams. If it tanks, then the Leafs are in the lottery for McDavid. This is the year to experiment with the farm! This is the year to embrace true culture change! No more overpaid UFA signings or trading prospects for vets! Equal accountability for all!

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(estimations for 2014-15)
SALARY CAP: $71,100,000; CAP PAYROLL: $59,852,500; BONUSES: $1,295,000
CAP SPACE (24-man roster): $11,247,500

This is a 24 man roster with 11M+ cap space remaing for trades that become available to bolster the team.

Phaneuf + 8th to Florida for 1st overall (Ekblad or Reinheart), Reimer to Winnipeg for a 2nd. Franson to Edmonton or Calgary for a 2nd. McClement, Bolland, Kulemin released. Ranger re-signed. Orr buried in the minors. Komarov signed at 2M.

Abbott, D'Amigo, Holland, Smith, Leivo, Ashton, Broll, Brennan, Granberg, MacWilliam, MacIntyre promoted.

Ashton is just a placeholder on the second line. Pre-season and first ten games Holland, D'Amigo, Bodie, Ashton, Leivo, Holland, Clarkson should be given looks on the second line.

Nightly healthy scratches for players that aren't towing the line and giving it their all!

Did I mention 11M+ cap space available to fill holes that become noticeable in the roster?

Culture change.

who plays for the Marlies? As GM of the Leafs, you assume responsibility for their affiliate as well ;)

As of now, the Marlies have enough on their roster to nearly ice TWO teams. McIntyre's promotion paves the way for Bibeau. Brown, Verhaeghe, Gauthier at center. Finn, Knodel on D. Pave the way for drafted wingers in the system. Place anyone who doesn't perform to your high NHL standard on waivers.

I like it.

But I would use some of that surplus cap space to upgrade 2nd line wing and to add a veteran defenseman.

That's precisely why I made this roster, working with what we have. Danny Boyle is available and has a good year or two left. Vanek is available...

If its true, that Leafs management looking at veterans on short-term contracts, then I'll be satisfied. If they go about throwing big money at max terms to guys like Vanek and Stastny then this organization will continue to spin its wheels and go nowhere in the cap era.

I expect them to go after after a Boyle/Morris, hope they let Franson and Reimer go, and fill out the rest of the roster with Marlies and continue to develop internally to build a sustainable contender. The best way to do it imo.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Personally, I'd be okay offering Boyle a 2 year and Vanek a 4-5 year.

Vanek? LOL. Yes, another inconsistent winger, just what this team needs... Did you see him during the playoffs? Probably not because he was completely invisible.

I don't agree with some minor things like having Ashton ahead of D'Amigo, sitting Leivo in the pressbox, or taking Smith ahead of McClement but certainly agree with not going nuts on the FA market and overpaying players for a slight upgrade. The last time Toronto signed a FA worthwhile was when they signed Roberts and Corson in 2000, but then they had a team that went to the conference finals the year prior. Since that time the Leafs organization had signed Komisarek, Finger, Blake, Connolly, and Armstrong on the FA market and I just hope they don't stick their hand in that stale cookie jar again until the team has a platform to build its success off of. Its simply short-sighted thinking a big-name FA will change this team's fortunes around, and the negative implications in the cap-era are too hard for me to ignore.

Probably because he was playing for free. No playoff bonuses, no incentive. Why would he risk injury when becoming a pending UFA?

I'd much rather sign Cammalleri than Thomas Vanek.

Vanek finished his season off with 78GP 68 points and a +7. Even a + 4 on the Islanders! -5 this year on Buffalo.

Mike Cammalleri at 63GP had 45 points and was a -13!

We don't need to continue to sign players who give up more than they get.

Vanek has stated he wants to go to a competitor. And lol at the no bonus no,incentive comment. Consider the previous sentence, he wants to win. I've never met anyone who shuts it down for the playoffs.

Who would you fill in the blanks with?

The two bottom six forward spots will be filled by marlies ( which ever two earn the spots at camp ). Back up to bernier either macintyre or a cheap UFA on a one year deal. 2nd line wing and the top 4 opening on defence would be the two spots filled by trade or UFA signing.

He wants to test the UFA market. Final four isn't a competitor? He clearly just doesn't want to play for the Habs.

Interesting. I see you want to keep Homophobic Sluroof around.

its comments like these that help people lose credibility. Its fine that people have different opinions, but at the very least provide insight and facts as to why, and name calling? Homophobic Sluroof, really are we 12?
