Expecting Hutson to be an all situations D is setting yourself up for disappointment, that is all I'm going to say. Doesn't mean he can't use his offensive gifts to be a useful NHLer.

No lol. Do you even realize how great of an achievement it is for a defenseman to score 53 pts or even 48 pts in the NCAA? 53 pts would have him tied for the most points by a defenseman since 1997-98. Hutson is producing/on pace for historic numbers.

Absolutely not true.
Productuon means nothing until he gets to the NHL. He is small and can’t defend.

Yes it is. I know you’re blinded by bias but he gets absolutely caved when his opponent gets any sustained zone pressure. if he loses his 50/50 which happens a lot, his team gets caved

So long as that other defenseman from the 2022 draft doesn't outscore Hutson.

Hutson is a terrific offensive defenseman but scoring is up a fair amount.

I don't think that's true.

If we look at the year in which Matt Carle scored 53 pts, we can see that there were 19 players that scored 50 pts or more.

Last season in the NCAA, only 5 players scored 50 pts or more

If they convert him to the wing at this point, I think he's going to become a a very specialized player. I can't think of a precedent of a defenseman moving to forward that late and having an impact.

Byfuglien is perhaps one, but he's a completely different type of player, and his run at forward was temporary.

I recall the Habs doing this with streit but it didn't quite work the same and he went back to full time defense the moment he left the organization.
Burns? Wasn't he converted in college or the AHL? But he's flipped back and forth, largely remaining a d-man because that's how he's used best.

I wasn't saying in comparison in 2005-06, I was talking about more recently. If I recall correctly, NCAA goals/game have trended relatively closely with the NHL.

But my broader point is that while Hutson is having another terrific season, he's currently 3rd in points and points/gp among NCAA defenseman, who were also both on the US WJC team.

I understand your point, and it is valid.

But when you look at context the narrative changes quite a bit.

The simple fact of the matter is that both Casey and Buium play on more offensive teams than BU; Denver scores in excess of a goal per game more on average than Boston University (5.15 vs. 3.89) while Michigan scores 0.66 goals per game more (4.55 vs. 3.89).

So yeah, Casey and Buium (1.4PPG for Casey, 1.35PPG for Buium) are having incredible offensive seasons by NCAA standards, but I would still argue that Hutson (1.35PPG) has been the better of the three offensively, by a respectable margin.

I have my concerns about this prospect.

I dont know if he is just bored with NCAA competition but i havent seen much development or growth from his game over the least 2 seasons.

Offensive abilities are great but he has been stagnant in every other aspect of his game.

I dont find him elusive/explosive enough when he has the puck on the D-end which is going be problematic when NHL teams dump the puck into his corner.

True magician with the puck in an offensive situation but he isnt going to go far in the nhl if he is merely a specialist.

Lots of development time left.

If he can stick in the NHL, in terms of impact, I see him as a Marc-André Bergeron/Andy Delmore type. A journeyman PP specialist who can take the odd shift on the 3rd pairing.

He was named on the 1st all star team and was the most used defenceman, you are either dumb or blind, I hope it's the latest.....

Touche. Another dumb post by Whiskey trying to bring Casey glory in here....

Can you post pts total for defenceman from last year in the NCAA to this date, I guess I know who is 1st and it's definitely not Casey ;)

That's definitely a valid point, Michigan is loaded and Denver's offense is nutty. I would counter with the fact that Casey is leading his team offensively (in scoring), but honestly all this does is show that all 3 of these guys are elite offensive dmen at the NCAA level. Pretty rare to have 3 talents like that in the NCAA as underclassmen at the same time.

Why do people forget that many players can be good at the same time ? Both players can have success , it does not have to be one or the other

Love Hutson and love Casey , both have very exciting future
We're all just throwing darts blindfolded, right? Not anyone's assessment is right or wrong until the fat lady sings. Like me or example, I have big doubts about Hutson making it as a regular blueliner in the NHL, even though he's a Hab. Time will tell...

I dont think he is that bad defensively
I think he needs to stop getting caught beneath the hashmarks in deep playing in rover mode which he does too much.
You can go in deep................ just dont stay there.
the majority of the season he has been playing with Case McCarthy which I think is a toxic pairing and got scored against way too much for a variety of weeks. Even the announcers brought up underlying numbers of that pairing giving up a ton of odd-man rushes against.

Plus I am not a fan of Case McCarthy game in general. Hutson will be in rover mode caught in deep and a forward is covering and McCarhy will do some BS like pinch essentially creating an odd man rush against on a forward.

Pandolfo has said he is moving Willander around to "stabilize pairings" even though he didnt want to break up the celebrini willander pairing.

Just take Case McCarthy off Hutson's damn pairing. It aint it

Should be
Hutson - Willander
Webber - C. McCarthy
Celebrini - Gallagher
extra G. McCarthy

---- or ---

Hutson - Gallagher
Celebrini - Willander
Webber - C. McCarthy

Normally you’d expect more than just 4 points more if production from one season to the next, that’s only pace too. pace doesn‘t matter, production does. and he is still a liability in his own end.

Hutson broke Brian Leetch's rookie record that stood from the 1986-87 season. That year the leading scorer of Leetch's team had 83 points. Leetch was 6th in team scoring.

Huston just broke the rookie record, as the leading scorer and is on pace to beat that production this year.

You are saying "normally you'd expect more" 🤣

Why is it controversial to say I expect progression from one season to the next?
