Yeah, this just confirms my thought that they aren't going to be in tank mode next season

last paragraph seems to suggest they might still be in tank mode next year...

“We have a lot of work to do here. We may take a half-step backwards (next season) to take a full step forward. Sometimes that’s a necessary part of the process. We’re looking at every possibility. This isn’t easy to go through. None of us like losing. You just have to stick to the plan and keep going.â€

Wonder how you take a half step back from 30th overall?

Well , it sounds like we will be flooding the team with many "kids" next year.

The "half-step back" could mean

Instead of losing the way we did this year (just pure lack of talent)

We will be losing next year with talent(kids) but be playing mistake filled hockey

Sooo ... who is on the draft board for 2017?
Any generational talents we could lose out on by not winning the lottery again next year?

Nolan Patrick. Another high end two way centre in the mold of Kopitar and Toews.

As a Canes fan, I think the Leafs are going to surprise a lot of teams and be better sooner, rather than later. They have a great FO, a great coach, good player personnel evaluation, a good prospect pool, lots of picks and gobs of cash. You can see how much more structure and effort is in their play, even with a line-up that lacks talent.

IMO, the problem in the past has always been a dysfunctional management and no vision and long term plan. That's in place now and when they do turn the corner, they'll be good for a long time. The biggest weak spot is D. Rielly is a really good cornerstone and even Gardiner can be a piece of it, and Dermott cold pan out, but they really need to beef that up. Rather than trying to trade for big names and/or signing them in UFA, IMO the next two drafts can go a long way to address that. Sign a couple of lower tier vets as stop gaps that can also act as mentors to these guys kinda like Carolina has done with Hainsey and Liles to go along with Faulk, Hanifin, Slavin and Pesce.

The canes young growing D scare the crap out of me, this is a team we will be battling for a PO spot for a long time.

Instead of losing a few close games, you lose A LOT more close games.

So Lou is basically saying he wants a shot at Gabriel Vilardi, Nolan Patrick, Max Gildon , Michael Pastujov. Tank for a few years is likely. The pain is coming.

Right now it's 1. Patrick 2/3. Gildon/Vilardi

Patrick - big, strong play making C. Heard different things on how he is in his own end. Anywhere from a Joe Thornton to a Jonathon Toews

Gildon - Lot of people tossing the S. Jones comparable

Vilardi - quick goal scoring C, like a poor mans Stamkos. May come to the NHL as a winger though.

When he said "we may take a step further back next year to take a step forward" you took that to mean we are in win mode ?

Going to disagree on that one. He and Babcock have both already said the lineup is going to be young and they expect some pain because of it. There does seem to be a theme of wanting our management to be liars but they so far have always done exactly as they have said. How long before people start believing them ?

I don't know if you call it a tank year. More realistically it's a developmental year with the nice safety net of another high first rounder if things don't go smoothly.

Lameriello "sometimes we have to take a half step back in order to go forward"

LOL. We are in last place. Where is "half a step back" from last place?
