The Devils fans seem more concerned with getting rid of Vanecek than acquiring Kappo. It seems like their view is any trade that gets rid of Vanecek without retention is a good one.

As they should, Kahkonen is awful. Anyone who has watched any two Sharks games knows Blackwood has been so, so much better and the Devils were thrilled to throw Blackwood into the dumpster

I wouldn't be surprised if Kahkonen's play over the last few games had harmed his value substantially. He really struggled and was giving up goals that no contender would want their goalie to give up, I suspect that might explain why all we got was Vanecek and a 7th

That doesn't make trading straight up for an even worse goaltender who is making more money for an additional extra year without any other compensation coming back our way any better.

The benefit to this trade may be that the Sharks know who will be in net next year versus wondering who they may be able to sign through free agency. San Jose will be the least attractive destination for a goalie in the off-season.

Exactly, and even if we could get a UFA goalie to sign with us it would certainly be at least a 2 year contract. This is a no risk move to fill the roster spot during a meaningless season.

That's the assumption but still disappointing.

Ive read this so many times and I still cant understand it. You are saying that Devils fans being happier they got rid of Vanecek with no retention than they are with aquiring Kahkonen....any better? What any better?

Not a single person would have called Kahkonen a better goalie than Vanecek 6 months ago. Goaltending is extremely volatile from season to season. If you don't have one of the small handful of elite goalies the smartest thing to do is just go as cheap and short term as possible in net which is exactly what Grier is doing.

Lower $$, less term.

(Sounds like a Miller commercial)

Kahkonen is UFA this summer, Vanecek has another year on his deal.
Kahkonen $2.75m AAV; Vanecek $3.4m AAV.
