Added some good players in Holm, Turunen, Lindbohm and Juovonen.

Can Jokerit finally have some playoffs sucess? I think they have the players for it. Good mix beetwen skilled players and gritty players.

New Covid restrictions in the Helsinki/Uusimaa region mean that Jokerit home games will begin without spectators.
As of now the new restrictions are valid until 12 September meaning that only the first game against Traktor will be without spectators. After that we'll see but considering the overall negative response I'm certain some or at least vaccinated fans will be allowed into the games beyond this date.

The Coronapass won't be ready before October/November.

Jokerit is still on 1st place in the KHL Western Conference. Will it be a breakthrough season for them?

Interesting article in Iltalehti regarding Jokerit's entry to the KHL (paywall):
Hyvästi, KHL? Jokereista kova väite: ”Venäläiset lopettavat Jokerien rahoittamisen”

Key notes:
  • Harkimo states that the annexation of Crimea changed Jokerit's KHL fate completely. The team had several massive sponsorship deals ready for the inaugural season that all withdrew prior to the season.
  • If he knew the outcome, Harkimo wouldn't have sold Jokerit. He states that the trade relations were like day and night in 2013.
  • An anonymous source speculates that Jokerit will play this and the next season in the KHL, but not longer than that. Harkimo also adds that the day Jokerit stops receiving Russian money they will be forced to look for a new owner as it won't be viable to fund the team with the current ownership structure.
  • Kalervo Kummola states that the reason he gav Jokerit permission to leave Liiga was an established plan of a European league with a Western and Eastern conference and keeping more national team players in Europe. Kummola also claims that one of the conditions to Jokerit's KHL entry was that the KHL would join the CHL with four teams.
  • Former CEO Jukka Kohonen explains that Jokerit were able to negotiate their own TV contract, and when he was finalizing the TV rights with Yle the very same TV rights had been sold behind their back. The planned budget was 4 million euros. According to an inside source, Rotenberg just used Kohonen as a tool to analyze how much money the KHL could claim for the TV rights.
  • Erkka Westerlund comments what he claims to be corruption in the early seasons as the referees favoured SKA and CSKA heavily. He claims, however, that this was not some foreign bias, but just a bias that favoured the two major clubs and that he experienced the same bias when coaching Salavat Yulaev.

Other interesting facts:
  • Jokerit doubled the sponsorship income the second season compared to the final Liiga season. Gate-revenue was increased by 150%.
  • Jokerit receives roughly 22 MUSD (about 20 MEUR) per year from Russia.
  • The total franchise budget is around 25 MEUR, whereas taxes account for roughly 8-10 MEUR per year.

An anonymous source can speculate as much as he wish. One thing is evident, this anonymous source knows nothing about Jokerit/KHL plans.

Kummola´s statement on four KHL teams joining the CHL is interesting. If I remember, yes, it was the idea. But, the idea was blocked by Finnish CHL founding clubs, personally by Timo Everi. So, if Kummola wants to blame anybody, he needs to knock on Everi´s & friends doors. He can not blame the KHL or personally Medvedev for the outcome.

Kohonen is not right with negotiating of the television deal. It has never worked like he says.

Westerlund presenting his unproved wishis as reality.

Yeah, 25 million euro is some average KHL budget.

Probably true. The KHL wanted that Jokerit was one of those 4 teams, but the CHL declined that proposition according to Kummola.

Yeah, I have just found Medvedev´s statement from December 2013, here. I will translate below.

"We agreed on everything (regarding the CHL) with the IIHF, even on scheduling & competition´s format. But unfortunatelly, KHL clubs participation in the CHL is impossible for one reason. We reserve a right to determine who will represent the KHL for the innaugural season & we chose Jokerit who is joing the KHL next season. And this became a problem. I received an official letter claiming that the KHL´s development in Europe is not in the CHL´s interests. That statement is simply dumb. It is a very short-sighted position if they claim that keeping Jokerit out of the Champions Hockey League is the way how to stop the KHL development in Europe.

I think that every normal human being understands that the CHL without the KHL clubs will be the secondary tournament, its winner will never be able to call himself as European champion. The KHL thinks globally about development of hockey in all Eurasia, so I am forced to point out that the CHL´s decision is short-sighted & I am very sorry the CHL is beginning with this."

And, it is still a problem - the KHL wants to choose the clubs participating in the CHL, while the CHL wants to pick the KHL teams by themselve.

It would for sure be a complete suicide mission to continue playing in the KHL if the situation continues in the current direction. Good luck getting sponsors and fans on board for next season!

I would not be surprised if Jokerit went through CSKA this season. And if not this season, definitelly the next.

If the games go on next week, it's likely to be very empty after Eteläpääty statements. Even at Jatkoaika, apart from a few posters, who you can now pretty much count on the fingers in one hand, the mood has turned. Several formerly "die hard" KHL/Jokerit fans are done with this project.
