The skinny:
Jordon Leopold - 24 years old - 6'0 193 lbs (according to TSN)
Season totals:
2003-04 Calgary NHL 82 9 24 33 +8
2002-03 Calgary NHL 58 4 10 14 -15
ATOI/g: 22:13; PPTOI/g: 3:51; SHTOI/g: 2:45
- Drafted by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim the 2nd round (44th overall) in 1999
- 01-02 Hobey Baker winner (Top U.S. Collegiate Player)
- Made Derek Morris expendable in Calgary
- Considered to be a key core of the Flames blueline along with Reghr and Phaneuf
- The Bad: already a couple of concussions under his belt
John-Michael Liles - 24 years old - 5'10 185 lbs
- season totals:
2003-04 Colorado NHL 79 10 24 34 +7
ATOI/g: 16:13; PPTOI/g: 2:42; SHTOI/g: 0:18
- Drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the 5th round (159th overall) in 2000
- 03-04 NHL All-Rookie Team
- Made Derek Morris expendable in Colorado
- Considered to be the heir apparent to Rob Blake
- The Bad: undersized for a defenseman
At first blush, both players seem to be very comperable - similar stats (keeping in mind that we're comparing Liles' 1st year stats to Leopold's 2nd year stats), not overly big for D-man by NHL standards, and they both made Derek Morris expendable on their respective clubs.
So the question is this: long-term, who will be the better D-man - both offensively and defensively?
Discuss.
