Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • In the opener, the two highest shots on the board finished 1-2 which led to a $64 exacta for $1.
  • In the second race, newly minted dad Calvin Borel beat Julio Garcia, riding for his usual trainer in Wesley Ward.
  • In the fourth race, a 76th time starter under the direction of Joe Rocco won for the 12th time and at 12-to-1.
  • In race 5, Joel Rosario, one of many New York-based riders to hit Keeneland today with Belmont dark, was victorious.
  • Another east coast regular Jose Lezcano won race 6.
  • Javier Castellano ended his skid at 24 straight losses with a victory in the Grade III Jessamine Stakes. Rushing Fall, trained by Chad Brown, played the part of a 3-to-5 favorite by coming from the back of the pack after a tough start to win in more than impressive form. Todd Pletcher had two starters and one, ridden by Manny Franco, finished second. The Brown-Pletcher exacta paid $35.60 for $1. Onto the Breeders' Cup Juvy Fillies Turf for the victorious connections.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • In the Grade III $100,000 feature, Morticia (Jose Lezcano/George Arnold), improved to 9 6-1-1 with her first graded stakes victory. Somehow appropriate for Friday the 13th.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • In race 3, the #13 won at 13-1 on Friday, the 13th.
  • Sheldon Russell, who won race 3, and Jevian Toledo each had three winners.

Santa Anita (California):

  • Some decent returns as the card progressed. The race day ended with a $.50 Pick that paid over $5,000.
  • Races 4 through 7 each had $20 winners.

This is the race of the day in my eyes. I want to see if Mojovation continues to grow. But....two south Florida regulars have made it to New York. Luca Panici, who could be a debut as I don't recall him ever riding at NY, and Tyler Gaffalione are in the big show today.

Belmont (New York):
  • In race 8, the 127th running of the Grade III Futurity held with a $150,000 purse, Engage (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) won at 1-to-2. Joel Rosario, who won twice earlier, finished second. Tyler Gaffalione remained at Gulfstream as his horse was scratched.
  • In race 9, Rubilinda (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) repeated their 8th race victory with a win in this $200,000 race. The 3-year-old filly, sent off at 6-to-5, is now 4 3-1-0. Can't do much better than that, look for her down the road. My pick was Party Boat with Joel Rosario riding finished second with an incredible rush. Hoping against hope, I thought for a moment he pulled off the improbable win.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Many scratches throughout the card.
  • In race 5, the winner paid $70.80. The exacta, with two of the three longest shots on the board finishing 1-2, paid $519.40. The trifecta was $3,338.60.
  • In race 7, the Pick 4 returned $17,582.40.
  • In race 9, six of the horses were scratched leaving three runners two of which were Larry Jones. Surprisingly, exactas were allowed in the shortened field and the all-Jones payout was $6.20.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Race 2: Chris Landeros, riding for his father-in-law Ian Wilkes, defeated Mike Smith who rode a 4-to-5 favorite. This was Smith's best finish in three rides.
  • Trainer Ben Colebrook, who won the opener with an 8-to-1 pick, won race 6 at 18-1.
  • In the $500,000 QEII Cup, La Colonel (Jose Lezcano/Mark Casse) was sent off at 5-to-1 and topped a trifecta that returned $631.10 for $.50. The winner paid $12.20. Mike Smith was on a 30-to-1 morning line which opened at 9-to-2 and sent off at 9-to-1. Bad line? The horse finished second-to-last in a deep field.
  • The $.50 Pick 5 paid $12,000+ to end the day.
Hawthorne (Illinois):
  • Plenty of scratches on the card.
  • Only two horses ran in race 2.
  • Only four horses ran in race 3.
  • Only three horses ran in race 4.
  • Only four horses ran in race 7.
Santa Anita (California):
  • I don't know much about trainer Daniel Dunham who has 57 lifetime wins and was 34 0-0-0 in 2017, but he was victorious in the opener with an 0-for-9 maiden ridden by Stewart Elliott. A 54-to-1 finished in second. The tri paid $5,183.40 for $2.
  • 18-to-1 or better finished second in six of nine races.
  • $2 Pick 6 paid over $58,000.
Woodbine (Toronto, Canada):
  • The finale was won by a 37-to-1 shot which led to a $.20 Super High Five Jackpot of $80,000+.

Woodbine has four races with purses starting at $250,000 including the Grade I $800,000 Pattison Canadian International turf stakes. Many visiting riders from the U.S. include Javier Castellano, Florent Geroux, Julien Leparoux, Jose Ortiz, Joel Rosario, Junior Alvarado and Robby Albarado. Europeans include Ryan Moore.

Woodbine (Toronto, Canada):
  • It was one of those days when you know the stars are aligned. Prior to the card's start, I mentioned to a cohort that Eurico da Silva was the man to play among Canadian riders while the influx from the East coast in the U.S. and some Kentucky-based riders headed north. Man, were my words prophetic but sometimes that isn't good enough. Sometimes we outthink ourselves.
  • Eurico da Silva won four times in nine starts, three consecutive mounts, and finished in the money an incredible six times. He was 9 4-1-1 today including winning the biggest prize the Grade I 80th running of the $800,000 Pattison Canadian International with a 42-to-1 shot which returned $87.90. The $1 tri paid $2,549.40. The $1 super paid $20,891.25. 5-year-old gelding Bullards Alley, trained by Tim Glyshaw in Kentucky, won for the 6th time in 35 starts. He was the longest price on the board and had the highest morning lines odds. And as if that can't be more stunning was the fact that the victory was a romp and the winner opened it up in the stretch. He earned a 114 Beyer Figure which is the highest such rating on turf Beyer in North America so far this year.
  • Blond Me (Oisin Murphy/Andrew Balding), who lost by nearly 80 lengths in her most recent race, won the $500,000 Grade I E.P. Taylor. The 5-year-old mare came to North America for the first time, with European connections, and defeated her rivals with a stellar performance at 7-to-1. The mare won in Turkey and Great Britain among other venues. I am unaware of this Irish jockey but I have rarely seen a rider as exuberate towards his horse as was shown today. He hugged and kissed multiple times and then went back for a return. A tremendous display of emotion. This was the one stakes race in which Eurico da Silva did not have a mount.
  • In the Grade III Ontario Derby, Tiz a Slam (Eurico da Silva/Roger Attfield) won at 9-to-1 and paid an even $20. The $1 Pick 4 paid over $8,000.
  • In the $250,000 Grade II Nearctic, Field of Courage (Luis Contreras/Mark Casse) stunned onlookers with a 40-1 bomb. Very strong local connections with a successful result. The win paid $82.70. The $.20 Pick 5 paid over $7,800.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Luca!!! Luca Panici won the finale with the longest price on the board at 40-to-1 which returned $83.40. The exacta was more than $800. The $.50 tri returned over $2,500 or slightly over $10 grand for a $2 bet. The 4$ super paid $27,735. The $2 pick 5 handed out $14,051.40. Luca!!!!

Belmont (New York):
  • Manny Franco and Irad Ortiz, Jr won twice but today's big star was Tyler Gaffalione who visited from Florida and showed the racing world why he is on the cusp of greatness as winningest rider in the U.S. to date for 2017 (or at least one more than Irad Ortiz, Jr.). Gaffalione won three times and appears to be headed to a sensational conclusion for 2017.
  • Among Tyler Gaffalione's wins was for Wesley Ward with Happy Like a Fool in the $150,000 Grade III Matron Stakes. The 2-year-old filly is now 2-for-2 in North America in her 4th career start
  • Who you gonna call when you need a win? 1-800-Mike Luzzi responds and delivers. Of course. His only mount of the day and Luzzi got Mr. Buff to the lead and never looked back. The third win in four starts for the combo. It was Luzzi's second win at the meet in 22 starts. Luzzi!!!
  • Following the finale, the $2 pick 4 paid $6,607.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • The $2 pick 5 paid $91,299.80 and the $2 Pick 4 returned $4,391.20.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Chalk up three more wins for Hall-of-Fame rider Kent Desormeaux.
  • Another one bites the dust! The $2 Pick 6 was nailed for $549,864.20. The winning ticket cost $80 and was purchased in Michigan. Pantsonfire was the final winner in the correct wager.

Parx (Philadelphia):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. went to Philadelphia today since New York was dark and picked up a victory to tie Tyler Gaffalione for the most wins by a North American rider to date in 2017. Gaffalione has 31 less rides. Still, my pick to win the Eclipse Award for top jockey will be Jose Ortiz especially he is the leading money earner at $23,000,000+. Javier Castellano, the defending Eclipse winner, is about $3,000,000 behind.

Belmont (New York):
  • Todd Pletcher went 2-for-2 with 2-year-olds today including an $11.40 winner ridden by Javier Castellano. And the filly was coming in off a win. That is a gift.
  • The Pick 5 after the Castellano/Pletcher victory returned $14,233. Not bad for a Wednesday card.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. was winless today including a late scratch in the finale. He is currently tied with Tyler Gaffalione as the winningest rider in North America to date for 2017.
  • In what world does Jose Lezcano have a 24% winning percentage on dirt but just 5% on turf? He does at this meet.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Jose Ortiz visited from New York and won three of his five mounts. I maintain he will knock Javier Castellano, who has won the last four years, from the throne as the Eclipse winner for top rider when the awards are announced in January.

Belmont (New York):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. had another outstanding afternoon going 3-3-0 in 7 mounts. His two-day total is simply one to remember: 15 8-4-1, 13 times in the money in 15 starts and 8 victories. He now leads Tyler Gaffalione by 8 wins in the national leader standings with Gaffalione riding twice tonight at Remington in Oklahoma. Gaffalione will be in New York Saturday and back to Florida Sunday.
  • The $2 Pick 6 paid out over $18,000.
Remington Park (Oklahoma):
  • Tyler Gaffalione won the first of his two mounts at 1-to-9. He didn't hit the board with his other mount.

  • The Sprit of '76...thousand: The racing day ended with a $.50 Pick 5 pay out in excess of $76,000 in race 10. Following the finale, the $.50 Pick 4 returned more than $8,000.

Sad news in that Irap was euthanized due to laminitis. Irap, who last ran in September and finished second in the Pennsylvania Derby, had three wins including the Ohio and Indiana derbies.

Belmont (New York):
  • Belmont held the annual Empire Showcase which is a huge day for locals. There were eight blacktype races (summary for each below) on the 11-race card. All 98 horses entered were bred in New York state.
  • The event was held during fantastic fall weather and all-sources handle exceeded $13 million which was up 36.5% from a similar day with inclement weather last year.
  • Jersey Joe Bravo, Javier Castellano, Manny Franco and Jose Lezcano each won twice. Trainers Chad Brown and Charlton Baker both won twice.
  • Race 2: Burning Rose (Kendrick Carmouche/Dominick Schettino) was sent off a 7-to-1 and won the first of eight New York-bred stake races.
  • Race 3: Joe Bravo outrode Joel Rosario in the stretch and won the $150,000 Iroquois for trainer Charlton Baker. The $2 Pick 3 paid $3,180.
  • Race 4 and Race 5: Twisted Tom (Javier Castellano/Chad Brown) won consecutive races, the $200,000 Ticonderoga Stakes and the $300,000 Empire Stakes. In the latter, Twisted Tom won for the 7th time in 10 races. He is 6-0-0 in his last seven starts with the one blemish the 2017 Belmont Stakes.
  • Race 6: Manny Franco had the first of his two blacktype victories in the $250,000 Sleepy Hollow.
  • Race 7 which was not a blacktype, Angel Arroyo rode a 31-to-1 shot to victory. The $1 exacta paid $226. The $1 double paid $369.
  • Race 8: Joe Bravo won his second blacktype race in the $150,000 Hudson Handicap and outrode the sizzling Irad Ortiz, Jr who was shutout today.
  • Race 9: The combo of Jose Lezcano/David Cannizzo won the $200,000 Mohawk Stakes.
  • Race 10: Manny Franco returned to the winner's circle for the second of his two stakes wins in the $250,000 Empire Distaff. Trainer Charlton Baker won his second blacktype race of the day.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • At Maryland Millions Day, seven of the 11 races were blacktype with purses of $100,000+. The attendance of 22,682 was the largest since 23,367 watched on October 2, 2010. All source handle exceeded $4,000,000.
  • Maryland-born rider Nik Juarez was the hit of the day with three victories. All of his wins was blacktype, for three different trainers including Todd Pletcher and Graham Motion.
  • Rider Julien Pimental had two blacktype victories including narrowly defeating Ashley Castrenze who led most of the way, dropped to second by a head and fought back to take what appeared to be a lead for a split second prior to the wore. It was her lone mount of the day.
  • No trainer won more than once.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • In the Grade II $250,000 Raven Run, Miss Sunset (Julien Leparoux/Jeff Bonde) invaded from California and won stylishly. Mike Smith rode the 3-year-old filly her last three starts and she now has a 3-race win streak.. The California-bred had run exclusively in her home state prior to today.
  • Julien Leparoux won twice including defeating Jose Ortiz who rode a 2-to-5 shot.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Rafael Bejarano was a perfect 3-for-3.
  • The feature race was won by B Squared (Mario Gutierrez/Doug O'Neill). The 3-year-old colt began his career with two wins in his first three starts but was on a 5-race skid including consecutive eighth place finishes entering today.
Century Downs Racetrack (Calgary, Canada):
  • The $1 Super High Five paid $67,000 which held the mark for the highest payout in North America this Saturday.
Hastings Racecourse (Vancouver, Canada):

Belmont (New York):
  • "Three noses on the wire!" A fantastic finish in the feature today. Delarna (Nik Juarez/Kelly Rubley) pulled a $40.40 shocker in the $100,000 English Channel. The Maryland connections were overlooked by too many. This horse could have been played with all the questions in this race. Juarez was hot yesterday in Maryland. Will it be enough to knock off Irad Ortiz, Jr and others for Jockey of the Week?
  • Another Laurel regular, Steve Hamilton, made a rare trip to New York but his longshot singular mount was scratched at the game.
  • The $2 pick 6 paid over $69,000 and that was the highest payout in North America this Sunday.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Apple Betty (John Velazquez/Shug McGaughey), an Irish-bred, took the 1 1/2 miles S125,000 Grade III Dowager with a blistering final stride. The 4-year-old filly is 5-for-14 lifetime. Johnny V. gets to ride Cadillacs, as is said often, but this was a good, smart job by the vet in his lone ride of the day.

Mountaineer (West Virginia):
  • Luis Quinones won four times on eight mounts. He won his final four starts including the last three races on the card. Currently, he is third in victories (241) among North America-based jocks behind Irad Ortiz, Jr. (258) and Tyler Gaffalione (249).
Santa Anita (California):
  • Rafael Bejarano won twice. His 2-day weekend total included five wins on eight mounts.

This is a big boost for Laurel. Nik Juarez was selected as Jockey of the Week for his performances. I mentioned the possibility yesterday as something of an underdog but the voters saw fit, too. Excellent recognition when otherwise it could have been overlooked.

https://www.paulickreport.com/news/people/quartet-stakes-winners-leads-juarez-jockey-week-title/

Reviewing multiple stakes wins and strong weekly statistics, voters named Nik Juarez as Jockey of the Week for the week ending October 22, 2017. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Jockey of the Week is sponsored by Animal Element's Foundation Detox and Product X Performance Enhancer.

The only jockey to win four stakes last weekend, Nik Juarez was a strong contender on the Jockey of the Week ballot. His aggressive schedule last week began with Parx on Tuesday, followed by Belmont on Wednesday and Thursday, Keeneland on Friday, Laurel on Saturday and back to Belmont on Sunday.

Belmont (New York):
  • Joel Rosario had one of his typical "on" days. He won early which means he will repeat. Today, he had three victories, the first coming in race #2.
  • One of Rosario's wins was for trainer Kentucky-based Brad Cox who doesn't bring too many horses to New York but is an excellent 5-for-15 (33%) at the meet. The top trainer at the meet is Chad Brown with 39 wins and a percentage of 31%.
Gulfstream West (Florida):
  • Emisael Jaramillo had an extraordinary day winning four times in five starts with the lone blemish a place finish. He seems to excel when he is on live mounts, meaning he doesn't bring home many bombs but is a safe pick.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Ricardo Santana Jr. had three wins including two for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Belmont (New York):
  • What a photo finish for second place in the opener. The #7 got the nod. How would you like to have the #2 for second or perhaps wheeled it up-and-down 1st and 2nd?

  • In the second race, the winner paid $7.70 and the $1 exacta returned $4.85.
  • Javier Castellano, riding for Rudy Rodriguez both times, and Jose Ortiz each won twice.
  • Trainer Brad Cox won with one of his two starters and is now 6-17 at the meet (35%).
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • A 31-to-1 bomb, second longest shot on the board, won for the second time. It was the 5-year-old's first win since his maiden race. He had run on 6 tracks in his last 8 races.
  • The $.50 Pick 4 paid close to $10,000 after a 19-to-1 won race 4.
  • Gostisbehere broke his maiden and is now 8 1-1-4. A nice finish for his first win in 8 starts and paid about $19 in the finale.
Gulfstream West (Florida):
  • The winner in the finale paid $70.20 which topped an exacta that paid $547.20.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Kent Desormeaux was off his mounts today due to a virus. He was replaced in the opener by Martin Pedroza who topped an exacta that returned $245.
  • The connections of Mario Gutierrez/Doug O'Neill/Reddam Racing won at Santa Anita on a 31-1 bomb with a 2-year-old named King Eddie who was 0-for-3 with his best finish in 7th place. Same connections as Nyquist, Mrazek, Lidstrom, Tatar, Pavel and others (unsure if there is a hockey connection). The win paid $63.80 and the Pick 3 returned over $1,167.
  • The $2 pick 6 was nailed for $91,170 following the final race.
