We have this topic come up every time with an older team. And one thing that is always true is that teams in the middle of the standings NEVER rebuild. It doesn't happen until they suck.
And I don't think the Isles should blow it up. They need to take some chances on buy low talents. There was an Isles fan interested in Laine recently and that is the exact type of player they need to give a shot to, the asset cost would be low and there isn't a long term risky contract.
Dubois is another one, though he has a risky contract. But if the Kings pay you to take him and you think Roy can push him, then go for it. People here pretend he was always a bad player and that is actually a very new thing.
I'm sure we can come up with a lot more buy-low players. Go get the next Devon Toews (instead of trading him away. Get the next Nichushkin, or Forsling, or Verhaege. Despite the HF viewpoint, there are many ways for a hockey team to get better, not just through blowing it up.
